Private Piano Teacher

I started playing piano at age seven when my mother enrolled me in lessons. I have been playing ever since, and I absolutely love it. I began teaching private piano lessons in 2003, and have taught many thousands of lessons since that time. I have experience accompanying choirs, instrumentalists, and vocalists, as well as playing as a soloist in various piano competitions and recitals. I recently began taking lessons in jazz piano, a genre I never learned much about. I believe it is never too late to learn something new, and I am excited to start this new chapter of my musical life and to use this new knowledge to enhance my own teaching.

In my piano lessons I use the Faber's fabulous Piano Adventures series. In my opinion, they are the best books on the market, emphasizing reading by intervals as opposed to memorizing note names. This method minimizes student frustration while also decreasing the amount of time it takes a student to read a new song. Piano Adventures also focuses ...

Angela is the most inspiring teacher I've ever had. Aside from having played the violin for a year prior, I was a complete adult beginner on piano. My passion is Baroque-era keyboard works, and Angela immediately got me started on Bach Prelude No. 2 from 12 Little Preludes. Within 12 lessons, I was able to play the entire piece with ease. Before starting with Angela, If you would have told me that in under 12 weeks I'd be playing Bach, I'd have called you crazy. Angela's strong suit is that she is confident that you can play any piece you put your mind to, regardless of experience, while inspiring and motivating you to do so.

Aside from technique, each lesson was equivalent to a college course in music theory. She understands that technique is only half of playing an instrument and the importance of knowing the reason each note falls where it does. This may sound overwhelming, but Angela never gives you more than you can handle, while challenging you to improve at a rapid pace. It was an extremely gratifying experience and I am thrilled at the progress that I made in under a year.

I teach piano using a variety of methods, especially depending on the person's previous ability and experience level. If you have a child who is looking to learn the instrument or if you personally are looking to learn, I have some excellent beginning methods to teach people how to understand the instrument, read music, and build their overall skills all at once. I work to take a challenging instrument and make it an enjoyable experience to learn through music that you or your child enjoy. I engage my students with simple methodology that if applied can help advance not just a general understanding of how to play the instrument, but how to think, read, and understand the piano from an overall musical perspective.

I have found the best approach to doing this is by selecting music that you like to listen to and play, as it is much more fun to practice something that you enjoy rather than doing busywork to build skill.

Tyler arrived early, spent lots of time with my unruly daughter, and kept her on track! He's a good combination of fun/playful but also has a natural authority so that my daughter actually listens to his instruction. Well done and thank you Tyler!

Great first lesson - looking forward to the next one.

I feel like I learned a lot in an hour and he really helped me find an anchor point that I can go back to if I am stuck on a note. I realized that he went over every proven method that I learned throughout my experiences from elementary school to highschool and then added on to them by explaining how these methods help. He even showed me methods usually taught to college musicians.

The reason I always believed in private lessons is because no matter how few or how many you take, the learning process gets expedited immensely.

I definitely would recommend this teacher for learning a brass instrument.

Piano was the instrument I ran to when I was tired of classical guitar in college. As a consequence, I develop a very special relationship with it. I've learned to use it as a vehicle for expressing music in a way that's more free than any instrument that I do. Things I teach on piano usually include...

-Basic technique: scale fingerings, finger mechanics, dynamic posture
-Music Learning: how the piano makes music easier than with any other instrument, and what is the most efficient way to learn music
-Improvisation: how to explore music freely using easy keyboard techniques
-Composition: how to find and discipline your creativity through exploratory piano exercises

About Jonathan

I studied music therapy and music theory at Temple University from '06-'10. Learned a lot. Then again, I learned even more teaching at a school for kids with learning disabilities and working as a traveling street performer. Jonathan is incredibly skilled, a great teacher, fun, and very patient with our gregarious and somewhat distracted 9-year old boy. He has creative, tailored teaching techniques, will try new things, but also keeps our son motivated and progressing. He responds perfectly and patiently to my son when he veers off task, and gets him back on task. We are absolutely thrilled and couldn't have found a better teacher.

My son has special needs related to an anoxic brain injury. This can create frustration with simple things like learning a new chord that feels funny or is difficult to move your fingers to. He always checks in with us to see what concerns we have and then, helps us by offering suggestions on how to make something easier or less frustrating to learn. I think Jonathan does a good job of meeting us where we are. Jonathan is patient with both of us. Today, he talked to my son about practicing communicating so we can understand how to help him learn. He talked to me about it being ok to break away from the timing and to hit chords at the same time as my son so the song can come together.

Jonathan is flexible and easy to work with. My son has some struggles as a result of an anoxic brain injury. Jonathan is very understanding and patient with my son. He has also helped me with advice and suggestions on how to work with my son. We love the spirit of the ukulele and the good vibes it has.

"I had no piano experience prior to starting my lessons with Gfire, except for some sight reading from choir. Now, 2 years in, I feel I am going strong, thanks to her weekly lessons and support. She is patient and identifies areas for more focus. I would recommend Gfire looking for a fun and consistent teacher."

"AMAZING music teacher!

I have been taking lessons with Mike since I was age 5, and am now age 25. Mike was the first person to make me feel passion and love for music. He helped me discover my talent by allowing and encouraging me to play by ear and was always incredibly supportive, patient, and kind. Lessons with Mike make me eager to practice the piano daily and I have ALWAYS looked forward to our next lesson together because of the fun and easy-going environment he creates. If it weren't for Mike, I would not continue to play the piano as often as I do as an adult. He goes above and beyond for his students and I would HIGHLY recommend him as a teacher. I know I will take lessons from him for as long as he's still teaching!"

"Francesca has been teaching piano to my very active 12 year-old son for the past few years, and she is terrific, patient, fun, accessible and effective. Her methods are very structured, appropriately technical and yet totally engaging and achievable, so kids can make pleasant step-by-step progress without ever feeling overwhelmed. As the parent in the equation, I also appreciate that Francesca is easily reachable, very communicative, and totally tech-savvy. Francesca's lessons are the only online/FaceTime activity that I don't have to drag my son to. He genuinely enjoys learning from her and I'm really grateful for her skill and kindness with him!"
