Congratulations! You are headed in the right direction. Learning how to play Chess will improve your life in more ways than you could ever imagine. My students call me Coach Hodge. I am a Chess, Character, Leadership and Life Coach.

I help my students develop strategies for winning in Chess, but more importantly, I help them learn how to win in the game of Life. Life is Chess. Learning the rules; having a plan; losing gracefully; winning gracefully; and learning from every experience are just a few of the life lessons that come from the game of Chess.

I've been playing chess since I was about 10 years old and I've taught several other people the basics of playing chess, including small children.

About Melissa
I have been teaching since 2006 on a variety of topics. I graduated with an BA from the University of Wisconsin. My degree is in History with and emphasis on East Asian history.

I've taught all age groups from age 2 up to retirees. My teaching experience includes one-on-one and group classes in a variety of settings. I've taught corporate classes, private lessons, small groups, and traditional classroom lessons.

We have a student-centric philosophy of learning. Lessons are generally relaxed and designed to work towards accomplishing student determined goals. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. Special focus on topics like music theory, self-accompaniment, composition, song writing, and home recording are available as well.


What are your personal goals? We'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

Lessons with small children are more focused on just having fun while developing a good musical foundation, but we prefer for them to have as much personal ownership of their lesson as possible.

About Tyler
I received my Bachelors of Science in Cellular Molecular Biology, graduated Summa Cum Laude (GPA > 3.9) and Phi Kappa Phi (Top 10% of class). I scored in the 99th percentile of the MCAT, 100th percentile of the ACS National Organic Chemistry Exam, and 98th percentile in the science section of the ACT. This fall, I will be attending a Top 15 medical school.

I grew up with the learning disabilities dyslexia, dysgraphia, and auditory processing disorder. I believe the challenges of having learning disabilities has given me the experience to help others succeed and enjoy academics.

I began teaching by tutoring at-risk students in chemistry at my high school. I mentored students in problem solving and aimed to excite them towards the assignments.

I continued teaching as a teaching assistant for the upper division cell biology class
by instructing students in immunological laboratory techniques (including flow cytometry and ELISA).

My research on rheumatoid arthritis conducted at my college and Harvard Medical School has resulted in seven presentations, three at national medical conferences.

As a chess player I achieved a rating in the 98th percentile of scholastic players and have taught students from 8 to 27 years old.

Fantastic Instructor and very positive experience. The lessons are catered to my personal style, and are always fun and informative. Tyler really knows his stuff. In 5 lessons, I went from consistently playing ~1050 on Chess.com to ~1350 and still climbing!

I have been coaching students of all ages for the past decade. I am currently coaching for Kids Play Chess in elementary and middle schools while working on improving myself (I intend to become a GM within the next 10 years). I have also taught chess in high school and college environments. I've to chosen to begin coaching 1 on 1 so I can develop more personalized regimens for my students and get the most out of my time and yours. I am currently rated 1900 USCF and have been playing for the past 25 years (since I was three). About Mark
I find that even though chess is a calculated game of strategy, it is important to utilize creativity and critical thinking skills alongside a strong fundamental base. With that being said, chess has one variable component: the players. When coaching it's important to realize what your students' strengths and weaknesses are in order to maximize progress.

I've been an avid chess player my whole life, and I think it's one of the most engaging and mentally strengthening things you can partake in. Not only is it fun but it also is a game of wits and patience, and I'd love to sit down and help somebody feel they're the best they can be when they sit down for games of chess in the future.

About Rush
I'm hoping to get to work with students who want to dive right into mastering their camera and all it has to offer, whether we're shooting on film or digital, both of which I can offer instruction in. Learning to be in absolute control of your camera and how your settings will affect your photos is key to creating your images & making sure they come out exactly the way you envision them. Our time together will be a full immersion into light-writing. Over the years, I have had approximately 4 years of cumulative formal instruction on the subject, and have been freelancing since 2011, for events such as weddings, anniversaries, baby/bridal showers, graduation and engagement photos, live concerts, and just about anything else you can think of. Previously a Photography student of Daytona State College in Florida, I made the move up to Chicago
in 2015, and am currently studying at Harold Washington College. In the spring I will graduate with my Art Studio AFA. I genuinely look forward to any time spent with someone with a desire to hone their craft, and hope to bring more inspiration to those wanting to bring forth their vision. Aside from photography, I also teach a handful of other subjects that you or someone else may be interested in!

Rush is awesome! He broke down the camera into easy-to-understand steps and focused on areas I was struggling with. I learned a lot in a very short amount time.

guitarist in a local Chicago band LOOMS. a year ago we asked Rush to design a flier for some of our upcoming shows. we were so in love with what he made for us, that I ended up reaching out on my own to ask for photoshop tips. we did one "formal" lesson (this was before he was registered on the website) and man we covered a lot in 45 mins. i was surprised when rush told me he is still in school. you would have no idea from the way he conducts his lessons.

As a seasoned takelessons teacher myself, I was enthralled with Rush's professionalism and deep understanding of photography.

I do not see teaching as simply repeating what has been already detailed in text books and lectures. Everyone’s mind is different and thus everyone has a unique perception to understanding one issue or another. Things are better illustrated with an example.

A while back, there was a television show hosted by a T.V. personality named Monty Hall. In the show, Monty presented a contestant with 3 closed doors. Behind one door was a new car. And behind each of the other two doors was a goat. The contestant had the option to choose one door so as to win the new car.

The probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 or door 3 was the same, about 33.33%. Let us say that the contestant picked door 1. Monty would then open one of the other two doors that were not chosen by the contestant. There were 3 terms in the game: 1) Monty knew what w
as behind each door; 2) Monty cannot open the door that was already chosen by the contestant; 3) Monty would only open a door that hides a goat.

Let us say Monty opened door 3 revealing a goat. Monty then asked the contestant if the contestant would like to switch to door 2 or keep his original choice of door 1. Contestants would be bewildered not knowing really what to do. Was it better to keep the originally choice or was it better to switch or it would make no difference whether to keep the original choice or switch?

Meet Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn wrote a column called “Ask Marilyn” in a newspaper called Parade. Marilyn was known for having one of the highest recorded IQ. A reader sent Marilyn a letter asking her if it was better to switch or not to switch. Marilyn stated in her column that a contestant should switch since switching doubled the contestant’s chances of winning. Many of Marilyn’s readers erupted in protest including readers with Ph.D., mathematicians, and academicians. Most people believed that the probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 was the same of 50%.

This became known as The Monty Hall Problem or The Monty Hall Paradox. Articles and books were written over this problem. Actually Marilyn was right and this was proven using computer simulation. Yet until today many people cannot understand that switching doubles the chances of winning.

At first glance this paradox might seem irrelevant to teaching. But I think it does. This paradox tutor the mind in the subject of structured thinking which is very important in learning.
