Awarded Convention Performers Competition Winner from National Flute Association
Teaching since 1999
I have been teaching flute for almost 20 years. I have a doctorate in flute performance and have done training and extensive research in body mapping and efficiency of body use. I take a very holistic approach to teaching and playing the flute. Each student is a person, an individual unlike anyone else. Every body is unique and therefore will play the flute differently than other flutists. When I teach, I aim to get to know the whole person in order to effectively work with the flutist. I work to get to know how each student learns and processes information. A flutist cannot become a good musician without making the journey their own. My goal is to give every student their own individual path to reach their goals, while also giving them the tools to use in their own teaching of individual flutists. I emphasize these specific areas in my teaching: the physical aspects of flute playing, including playing position and posture, breath control, sound and tone production, projection and ...

Quick background: I was classically trained for about 7 years in piano, starting when I was around 9. My teacher was great, and did an awesome job of driving the fundamentals.
Fast forward to more recently: Having not taken lessons for 15+ years (I had continued playing and learning...just without a teacher), I decided I wanted to pursue a bit more jazz and theory. I went back to my childhood teacher, who very honestly told me that jazz was not his forte. I took a few months of lessons with him, which helped to get me back into the swing of things, but I was really interested in jazz.
I found Erica on takelessons, and she was truly amazing! If you're looking for a teacher who is always "by the book", this isn't her. While I'm sure she can do that, she thrives in allowing you to be a musician. Her understanding of complex time signatures is great, and she really helps to chunk things up into manageable pieces.
Some of her greatest strengths, from the student's perspective, are her patience, friendly demeanor, STRONG understanding of music theory (she's a composer at heart, and I've no doubt that she's great at it), broad knowledge of music, from composers to artists, and her ability to help you learn to improvise. If I wanted to play different notes than what was on the page, within reason of course, that was ok. Having come from a classical background, that was quite refreshing.
I was always able to look forward to learning something new at my lessons; even her book recommendations have been excellent.
I'd say, because of her patience, she's a perfect teacher for adults and children alike. You really can't go wrong with Erica!"
Jim is a great teacher and one I would highly recommend.
He's very easy to get along with and listens to what your needs and goals are.
He's a teacher willing to go the extra nile."
Working with Jan has taken me to another level in my career that I don't feel I could have gotten to without her guidance, knowledge and teaching skill. Jan has the real-world information and contacts in the industry - there is no BS here. And it is all delivered from the heart with humor and incredible grace. She loves what she does and it shows.
Not only has my voice improved substantially but Jan has opened my range up and I'm confidently hitting notes other teachers told me were not within my reach. I finish each of my sessions with Jan feeling not only an incredible improvement in my vocal abilities but an increase in my confidence as a professional performer. No matter where you are at in your career, Jan is the person who will take you to the next level, and then the next.
I believe that working with Jan is key to my success and she's worth every penny."
Steve, is the best guitar teacher I've ever had. He goes that extra mile to make sure you understand what he has just taught you and makes it a great experience. I can't say enough about him"
