Teach students a basic understanding of music theory using voice and/or piano as the learning tool (*cannot teach on guitar). For those wanting to learn music theory for beginning piano they will need to have access to a piano or keyboard for practice between lessons, nothing fancy required, an inexpensive keyboard will suffice.
Students will learn about the basic elements of written music: time signatures, note and rest values, meter, rhythm, tempo, keys, intervals, how the circle of fifths works, relative minor scales, all major scales, etc. For those wishing to learn theory on beginning piano, they will also learn how to play chords (major, minor, diminished, basic 7th chords, sus4, etc), inverted chords and how to transpose songs into different keys. Work will be done mostly in reading and understanding written sheet music examples, vocal practice and chord charts.
Music theory can be so complex and daunting I think. I have students who studied it in school but didn't retain ...

I cannot learn something without wanting to immediately begin sharing what I know. That's what inspired me to begin teaching, and it continues to drive me today.
Music Theory is a field of study which enables performers and composers to better understand the "nuts and bolts" of their craft. It can be exciting, and I intend to make it so by applying the concepts we discuss to real musical examples in all genres.
If you do not live nearby, we can learn together through online chat via FaceTime, Skype, or Google Hangout. I have openings during early daytime CST, which means if you're in the UK or Europe and you're an English speaker, I would be happy to schedule you.

Mike bares all the marks of a GREAT teacher. He knew what I wanted before I even realized that's where I truly was heading. Not only have I gained what I am seeking, but he has brought me further than I even dreamed for myself. There's no better feeling than playing the way you've dreamed. On top of being a great teacher, he not only is a kind soul, funny, and a good listener but he truly cares about your growth and what you want to learn. He is hands down an amazing teacher."

I'm taking music theory and composition lessons from Daniel to supplement what I already know from composing by ear. He's an excellent teacher, very enthusiastic about teaching the material, and extremely knowledgable. I feel like I've learned a ton so far and we're not even close to done yet! Highly recommended."

I met Dave in my music theory class at Ex'pression college. He's the reason why I'm making music today. I went from not knowing a thing about music theory or a piano to creating chord progressions, understanding modes, intervals, modal interchange, and how to read sheet music. He's extremely patient, professional, and easy to get along with. His passion for music and teaching is infectious, I highly recommend!!!"
