Students of all ages in a personal relaxed atmosphere.
Customized to each student. If the student has not previously taken lessons I use Piano Adventures as the basic course guide. I have found it the most productive and enjoyable for my students. I uses a minimum of the Lesson and Theory book for my younger students with either the basic course or Accelerated course depending on their age and maturity. Adults begin with the All In one adult book. I add the other books that accompany each level based on the particular students needs and interests. I believe that a good grounding in Theory is essential as a student who becomes proficient in sight reading, no matter how well he/she plays by ear, will find that the doors for lifetime musical fulfillment with be much wider. However, with a student who has already had some lessons I will be happy to continue with any method that the student is currently using.
I also believe in supplementing the Piano course with the student's favorite ...

Kathy came to my home for my lesson. She has a very pleasant personality and it is very easy to follow her instructions. She kept the pace up, yet did not overload me. It's been a number of years since I have played and she did an excellent job on getting me back on the keys. I am looking forward to our next lesson.

Piano needs to be fun especially for beginners. Matthew teaches with the "Piano Adventures" series. These books (available on amazon) give the student a comprehensive look at learning piano. In these books you learn how to read music, and you will be playing songs on your first lesson! As for older students I offer a review of music theory that can help you play/hear some of your favorite songs and most of all have fun! Matthew's method is based on each students individual goals and their level of proficiency on the instrument.

About Matthew

HELLO! My name is Matthew Smith and I love music and I love to teach it even more. Although my upbringing is in jazz and classical music, I am very fluent in latin, hiphop, rock, pop and more world music as well.

"Our sons go to Ms. Stewart’s group ukulele and piano classes and we’re so happy we found her. The boys love her and are learning so much. If you are looking for a patient and warm teacher who actually knows what they are talking about, contact Ms. Stewart. We went through 3 teachers to get to her. I wish we were referred to her first. "I took piano lessons for a year when I was around 9 years old and because my instructor, who was my Dad, was a terrible teacher I hated it.

I am now over 70 years young and have been taking piano lessons from Christopher Cohen for two years. He has excellent teaching skills and is just a wonderful teacher and person. He is patient with me (a slower learner) and encourages me to choose special pieces I want to include in my lessons.

Because of Christopher excellent teaching skills I am now enjoying the piano and eagerly looking forward to each session. Even my dog appreciates the piano and she never misses any of our lessons.

Thanks Christopher!"
