Dj zen is an excellent teacher for someone like me.. He was patient and understanding when it came to the speed at which I pick up things. As an instructor, David exudes the perfect balance of amiability and intimidation. He will inspire you to work your absolute hardest without scaring you away. Personality-wise, he is that happy medium somewhere between Mr. Rogers and J.K. Simmons in Whiplash. I studied with David during my college years and 7+ years later I still utilize his concepts in everyday practice. There are many specific stories, ideas and exercises of his that have always stuck with me and come up quite often when I am working on something new or teaching a lesson or class of my own. Whether we were learning orchestral excerpts, 4-way independence, Bach fugues or just playing quarter notes with the metronome, I always left our lessons feeling highly motivated and anxious to practice. It's also great to have a teacher that can blow your mind with his own playing. It might be difficult for some teachers to get students into something like the tambourine or triangle but when he picked one up and casually played some insane rhythms and advanced techniques I was immediately inspired to learn to do the same. Not to mention his drum work on Matt Herskowitz's "Forget Me Not" - some of the things he does on that record still keep me up at night. I'm very grateful for my time as a student of David's and glad I can still learn from him as a friend and colleague!

Not many world-class musicians are also great teachers. They either aren’t humble enough or never took the time to learn how to explain what they do. Anthony Fung is a true exception. As a lifelong fan of the drum set but someone who was always too intimidated to learn, I tried many teachers in-person & online and walked away feeling confused more often than not. Anthony was the teacher who changed that.

I first discovered Anthony’s drumming hearing him at the Newport Jazz Festival playing the drums with Grammy Winner and virtuoso pianist Danilo Pérez. Never have I been more blown away by hearing a musician live. He was in his early 20s at the time and had all the signs of someone with a special gift who would go very far in the music world. The drumming spoke for itself.

Then, later that day, he taught a drum clinic for hundreds of under-privileged high school students and adults that had the room buzzing. I saw the profound difference in the students’ playing immediately. And it became clear why people all over the world contract Anthony for his teaching.

We kept in touch over the years and I took lessons whenever I was in Los Angles at his studio. After the first lesson, I found I had already learned more facility at the drum set than from years of slogging through method books and teachers who didn’t know what they were doing.

Since the beginning of this year, I have switched over to weekly online lessons, which I found to be just as effective as in-person studies. We are now studying advanced concepts and exercises for developing technical facility and versatility as a drummer in the 21st century (and I played my first gig on the drums!). I feel truly fortunate to be able to take lessons with one of the world’s greatest drummers. No matter what genre you play, and whether you’re a complete beginner or advanced drummer, I know you’ll benefit immensely from Anthony’s experience, world-class artistry, and personable approach.

Andy is an excellent instructor.

My 14 year old son had been playing drums for an hour or more every day for several months, and was making fair progress. He was convinced he could learn the drums on his own. But between his first and second lesson he improved exponentially. We were clearly going down the right path.

"Lets start off with Andrew, he is a great teacher. He is straight-forward when he needs to be, and doesn't beat around the bush. However he is highly considerate and friendly. As a high school student in a high competition area, my fellow percussionist lack guidance in terms of what to know about drums/percussion. I came into the year having bad technique, poor reading skills (reading music), and not a lot of confidence in playing in front of my class (solos required by school). Andrew was able to help me with all of those things. Also, i never feel rushed, and you can go at your own pace, yet some how there is always improvement. If your having any doubts, one lesson would clear those up. All in all, Andrew is a great teacher, and i look forward to continuing my lessons with him. "My son (6) and I have both been taking drum lessons with Bobby for close to two years and it's been an awesome experience. My son, of course, started from scratch, and I had some basic chops before starting, but with seemingly endless patience and dedication, Bobby has gotten both of us to sound great. We quickly progressed from basic 4/4 rhythms into the cooler world of paradiddles and ghost notes, learning techniques like dynamic drumming that go a long way towards making us both sound like legitimate drummers.

Knowing basically nothing about the technical aspects of drumming when we started, we needed Bobby's help to set up our kit. He showed us how to tune our drums, position the toms and ride/crash cymbals, and all around just get the best sound possible out of our basic TAMA drum kit. When Bobby gets grooving on our drum set, it becomes obvious that it’s not the size or cost of the kit that matters.

When we talked about what styles of music we were into and the kind of music we wanted to play, Bobby found perfect selections for us to play along to and he seems to have the sheet music to every song out there! One time I filmed a street musician drumming the funkiest of beats and after I showed it to Bobby, he broke it down for me so that I could play it too.

Bobby has been the perfect instructor for us and I strongly recommend anyone at any level to become a student of his."
