Bass guitar students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are part of the basic vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Intervals are also basic vocabulary of the musical language and progress into chords, and yes, bass players think and play chords.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the student's goals. However, I strongly encourage learning to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Songs utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. And by the way, they are really fun to play, especially when interacting with other musicians or performing for an audience.

These five ...

About Phillip
I teach music. The guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele just happen to be the particular instruments I choose. Music as a language, discipline, and art, is the goal. I've been teaching, performing, studying, composing, for some thirty years. I've studied and gigged in the classical, jazz, rock, blues, R & B, and country idioms. I've taught composition and improvisation to instruments other than guitar, (vocalists, fiddle, sax, piano, trumpet) I've taught all ages and levels. I currently pursue a doctorate of music in guitar at university. Students learn many things when studying with me. They learn physically how to play a particular instrument while learning music as its own language. Students learn how to learn, learn self-discipline, and access their musical expression, all potential life changing experiences. I am happy and
excited to announce I am available for on-line lessons, and will now be able to work with students from all over the world, regardless of distance or location!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am laid back, but at the same time very goal directed. I like to do technique and/or vocabulary, note reading, and songs every lesson. After six months students are able to to 'jam', (improvise over chord changes such as the blues). They are well on their way to becoming literate, probably a third way through the first book. They probably can play a half dozen songs well, and are starting to strum (comp) chord progressions in a musically rhythmic way. They may even have played in a couple concerts by then.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Office studio w/ guitar, bass, amps, and seating for parents, computer with skype capability.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring my guitar and writing tools, extra picks, extra paper etc. Students provide their own instrument, method book, staff paper, notebook paper. Hopefully they have a music stand and their own guitar picks and other items relevant for the study of their instrument.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, jazz, rock, blues, country, bluegrass, theory/composition, improvisation

I teach basics of bass guitar based on rudiments, root notes, and pattern recognition. We will explore key signatures and root note identification, as well as basic mechanics, tone control, and rhythm. I teach bass in the genres of blues, rock, and classic rock.

About Richard
Music is my life. Since the age of 16, I have studied the guitar extensively. During my high-school years I was involved in band, marching band, choir, and independent music theory. I started my first band when I was 19 in the U.S. Army, and my life has never been the same since. I played music professionally in local bands while attending UMSL and have been teaching guitar and musical performance to many students privately for the last 7 years while developing and exploring my own musical goals. Recently I have written, produced, and performed on 5 original music albums, toured from St Louis to Texas and Colorado, and have learned many things about humanity and our culture's relationship to music. Those who share a passion for music form an extraordinary community. Come take the first step toward your potential...

*** Lesson Detai
ls ***
My students can expect professional, expert advise from a working performance artist. One of my main philosophies is a focus on fun. If music is fun, then students will practice more - which leads to accelerating returns. My students can expect lessons tailored to their specific goals. First I will discuss with the student musical influences and genre preferences, then I will assess the student's current abilities and we will begin designing a weekly regimen of practice and study. As a product of the Internet generation, I recommend using all the tools available to my students including the Internet to further their goals. My students will also learn to perform with other musicians, so we will typically have a segment of each lesson dedicated to jam time. Whether my students aspire to be professional performance artists, impress their love interests, or just rock out in their bedrooms, I work with my students so that they can do exactly that.

*** Studio Equipment ***
one bedroom apt...hardwood floor...central room for studio...music stands, room parents to sit, chairs...

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring a music stand, an acoustic guitar, my handout literature, and any other equipment (mic, stand, vocal amp, electric guitar, guitar amp) based on what my students want to learn. I expect my students to own whatever instruments they want to learn.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching acoustic and electric guitar and stage performance. I teach using handouts that I customize for students and have lessons made up around different concepts such as - learning to identify what key a song is in - how to use 3 chord combinations - learning scales and when to use them - these type of things. I usually teach based on how I learned, which includes - using the Internet to learn songs - how to figure out how a particular song is played - getting into good practice habits - etc. My genres of specialty are Blues, Rock/Classic Rock/Southern Rock, and Acoustic Singer/Songwriter. What I like to do is ask a student what kind of music or songs they would like to learn, then build them up to the level they need to be to play those songs or that style of interest.

My first lesson with Richard was great! He explained how to set everything up and a few fundamentals in a way that we were able to get through them fairly quick and we got right to the fun part. I found myself playing a few cords and jamming with Richard halfway through my first 45 minute class. This is exactly why I wanted to have an instructor, so I can reap the benefits almost immediately, which makes me want to come back for more.

About David
Composer and guitarist David began formal music training at the age of 5 on the drums. He taught himself guitar as a teenager and began playing in local rock bands. Initially entering college as a Journalism major, his passion for music led him to Meramec College where he studied Music Theory with Robert C. Howard and classical guitar with Larry Bolles. From 1990 through 1993, he attended Webster University, and became only the second composer in the school's history to receive the BM/MM Scholarship. While at Webster, he studied composition with Dr. Kendall Stallings, Robert Chamberlin, and Kim Portnoy, Jazz History with Paul Demarinis, and 18th Century Counterpoint with Dr. Eloise Jarvis. During his education, he performed with many student ensembles and sat in on master classes by the great sitarist and surbaharist, Imrat Khan and jazz
guitarist Peter Leitch.

In 1993 he started St. Louis SoundWorks with Grammy nominated Adam Long and Mark McClanahan that specialized in mobile recording, and composing music for films and commercials.

As a musician, David has composed over 200 pieces for various instruments and combinations from small chamber ensembles to full orchestra. He was bandleader of two creative ensembles that focused on alternative notation compositions and improvised music, and later co-founded the avant-garde influenced rock band Diverted Course which released two CD's.

As a teacher, David has taught classical guitar and musicianship as an adjunct faculty member at Meramec College and Webster University. He has given seminars on the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Anthony Braxton. He has been teaching privately for 23 years and many of his students have gone on to successful music careers and performed all over the world.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students of all ages in a fun and positive manner. I am flexible and will tailor the lessons to satisfy your own individual goals. Whether you are a beginner that wants to gain a foundation in technique, sight reading, and basic theory or an intermediate or more advanced player that wants to increase their knowledge and polish their skills, I will devise a plan to meet your needs. I encourage regular practice and like my students to keep a journal to monitor their progress.

I teach a variety of styles including classical guitar, blues, rock, jazz, and avant-garde.

Ultimately, I believe everyone needs a creative outlet, a way to express themselves, and has something unique to say, and I aim to help those students find their own voice.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Extra guitars and amps at both places. Mixing board at the studio. Only has a upright piano at his home address but has a keyboard at studio

*** Travel Equipment ***
Expect my students to provide the guitar. Amplification is optional.

I am an experienced bass guitar teacher with 10+ years of professional career behind me.

I'm looking for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of good playing habits (learning the right songs that you makes you a better musician!). I specialize in rock, jazz and funk. I use some of my own transcriptions and the ones I acquired from Berklee College of Music, and also have the following tools available to use during lessons: sound recording equipment, sheet music, and more.

Let's plug in that guitar and play some smooth bass lines :)

About Akos
Hi there and thanks for stopping by.

I'm a bass player and electric guitar player with a history of touring around the world playing rock, funk and jazz styles. I graduated from Berklee College of Music with Bachelor's of Music in Professional Music - Bass Guitar, and am currently teaching and playing music professionally. My students ranging in ability from beginner to professional. I tend to focus on making sure my students learning experience is stress free and fun (most importantly)

Currently, I play in a number of bands in NYC and record with bands in Europe (Serbia - Hungary)

I can teach my students comfortably in my home teaching studio in Crown Heights, Brooklyn or I can travel to students house for extra charge. I work with bass player and guitarist in a wide range of ability, some are beginners and I have some who are
professional as well.

Some of the musical styles I regularly teach: Rock, Blues, Jazz, Funk, Soul, R&B, Classical.

Also online lessons is also available upon request by student.

***Lesson Details***

My students will gain the following from consistent lessons

Bass Guitar:

Techniques -

Slapping, Popping, Playing with Fingers vs Playing with a Pick
Improvisation
Creating interesting bass lines
Learning songs in order to have a good foundation for future development.

I tend to focus on learning songs instead of learning "boring" exercises.
You get more benefit from learning songs and working on a difficult groove or phrase rather than spending a lot of time playing non musical exercises.

***Equipment***

I have 5 Bass Guitars, 1 Electric Guitar, 3 Keyboards (NORD, KRONOS, MIDI CONTROLLER)

I have recording devices which can be used to record the lesson and get it in your email after our meeting, so you can go home and really listen to my comments again and learn more!

Hope to hear from you and start learning some good music!

Advanced electric bassist. Curriculum will vary according to needs/taste of the student

About Simon
Hi there! My name is Simon Willson and my main gigging instrument is the double bass. I studied Jazz Bass at the New England Conservatory for my Bachelor's and Master's degree.

I have been in love with music since I was very young, and it has been the best gift I have ever received. I would like to be able to share this gift with other people, and that has been the driving force behind my teaching.

In addition to teaching, I keep a very busy performing schedule. You can find me playing at different venues in NYC several nights a week, in addition to frequent tours to Europe, South America, and the US.

I have a background in the Jazz and Classical tradition. In addition to performing, I compose and play guitar and piano. I love harmony and theory, and feel confident teaching those subjects as well.

Some of my past teachers i
nclude bassists Ben Street, Dave Holland, Cecil McBee, and Donald Palma, pianists Ethan Iverson and Frank Carlberg, and trumpet player John McNeil.

- Single Note: Finger or Pick
- Playing in the Scale or Over the Chord
- Learn to Read Chord Charts & Tab
- Use different Styles to fit The Song you are Playing

About John
Started playing a Soprano Uke at an early age. Quickly moved to a Baritone Uke and wrote my first song at age 11. This also was the year that a Drum Set came into our house. I was in love with music . . . and still am after all these years!!
Hear are instruments I play professionally: Acoustic & Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar and Drum Set. I also have performed and led worship with the Electronic Keyboard. I can do beginner lessons in all of the above and Banjo, Mandolin & Fiddle.
Over the years I have enjoyed leading Worship Bands, forming Praise Teams, joining the "pit" for Musical Theater, Bluegrass Band, Solo Guitar & Voice and Background Music on the Keyboard. The list goes on and on and on AND the list is not finished yet. Have written quite a few songs and worked with other song writers on their pieces. If you hope to be a singer/son
gwriter . . . then I am your man! I can help with voice coaching and experienced critique of lyrics and chord selections.
Great success teaching the above instruments as well. The youngest student taught is 5 years old and the most mature was 72 years young!
I want you to know that I am a Christian. My love for Jesus continues to grow and I have always been careful to screen certain songs out of my repertoire and teaching.
Let me share with you My Love of Music and get you where you are hoping to go with yours.
