My grandson is 8. He dreams about learning to play the trumpet. Today was his first lesson from Mr. Tom Cross. The lesson was delivered perfectly at his level. With positive reinforcement. Clear direction. Humor. All the way home my grandson smiled!

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

A woodwind player since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach intermediate and beginning saxophone lessons.

About Thomas
Piano, woodwinds, trumpet, composition
Chords, sight-reading, theory, jazz, classical, and pop

No one ever regrets learning an instrument… yet many grow old wishing they had taken music lessons! A talent they’ll be able to develop their entire life, your children will thank you for giving them the chance to learn music. And bonus points for you: after just a couple years, you’ll have free entertainment every Christmas!

Or maybe YOU’RE the one that wishes to learn! It is never too late to begin learning an instrument. Everybody has the ability, and if you’re determined and interested, there’s nothing stopping us from achieving this very special goal. (Interested in learning to compose? Scroll to the bottom to learn more.)

Everybody learns differently, and everybody likes different things. Whether it’s improvising or singing alon
gside a song you love or reading through a classical concerto, I’ll help prepare you or your child to tackle a wide variety of styles, without missing out on any of the basics that turn good players into phenomenal musicians. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun. Music lessons include:

1. Building a really strong foundation so it's easy to interpret or understand any part, and to play it with the right amount of practice.

2. Learning to sight-read music, so you can play it well as soon as possible.

3. Learning how to improvise (make-up) music, learn music by ear, and to understand and create chords, which lets you play music in different ways.

4. Play different styles from classical to jazz to popular music.

5. Learning how to practice efficiently so you can learn music as fast as possible.

6. Composing our own original music.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Learning an instrument is one of those few skills that will genuinely last you your whole life. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it.

Now get out there and make some music! But start by signing up for lessons. I can’t wait to get started!

---

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.

Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.

We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!

Thomas is a great piano teacher who is incredibly professional, patient and helpful. He is fantastic at noticing deficiencies in your playing and is able to get you to fix them without ever being overbearing or too harsh. He's incredibly patient, knowledgeable and incredibly flexible in his schedule. There were times when I had to change my lesson times and he always made sure to find time for us to get our lesson in. Thomas offers the best lessons for the best price! Whether you're a casual player or looking to help improve your chops, Thomas should be your first choice.

I've just picked up flute after (literally) 50 years and been taking lessons with Thomas for several months. Lessons are enjoyable, and Thomas has taken great pains to gear them toward my goals for learning. Every lesson includes technique, musicality, and theory, with the theory taught through practical application rather than just as an abstraction. He also gives me guidance on how to practice, which was one of my key goals for taking lessons. I was concerned about whether I could find someone who understood how to teach adults - and am very pleased that I succeeded!

I figure out exactly where you are in your technique and knowledge of music and of the instrument. Then, I start teaching from there! For me, the goal of lessons should be the goal of the student, and I do my best to honor that!

I also encourage my advanced Jr. High and High School students to audition for various honor groups throughout California such as SCSBOA, CBDA, etc. With my background in these groups, I can effectively help my students prepare for the best audition they can do.

About Eric
Hi! I'm Eric, a Saxophonist, Composer, Singer, and Teacher that was born and raised in Southern California. I've been playing the saxophone for over ten years now, writing music for as long as I can remember, and singing since I was in elementary school. I play for a variety of groups in Los Angeles, and sometimes perform in L.A. and surrounding areas at venues such as the LightHouse, Saint Rocke, Avalon, The Mint, and the Baked Potato.

I keep my lessons fun, efficient, and applicable. I give students assignments to work on, not only so they don't forget what we talk about, but also so they can also expand upon the concepts given in lessons, (which familiarizes them more with the information). I look forward to helping you unlock your potential!

About Josh
I am an avid clarinetist, energetic performer and enthusiastic teacher. My dream career is to be a soloist like Martin Frost, to play in an orchestra, or compose and perform my music.
My passion for teaching is similar to my passion for performing, and I have experience teaching privately and in front of large groups, as a staff member for a high school marching band.

Josh is a great teacher, and I highly recommend him as an instructor for both adults and youth. I took clarinet lessons many years ago as an elementary school student. I have long had an interest in returning to the instrument, so I recently signed up for a series of lessons with Josh. Although it had been several decades since I first played the clarinet, Josh helped me get comfortable with the instrument again and provided terrific instruction on all aspects of the clarinet and clarinet performance.

Josh has been a fantastic Instructor for my middle school age son. He worked closely with him on several pieces that were required to audition at two summer music camps helping him to move from near last position the year before to the top of the class. His improvements were formally recognized with an award at the end of 7th grade and I think Josh was a large part of that improvement. We were saddened to hear that Josh would be leaving the Denver area but wish him the best of success in his new ventures. Josh is an excellent instructor and we would certainly work with him again in the future.

Experienced teacher of 10 years, specializing in brass, woodwinds and beginner/intermediate jazz! I just landed in Shoreview, MN from the top-shelf music programs of Poway Unified School District in San Diego, CA. Whether you are just learning your first notes or you're ready to start jazz improvisation, let's jam!

About Dayna
I am a life-long musician, performing with my vocalist mother from age 4 and studying piano and voice for all of my childhood. However, it all changed the day my 5th grade band teacher put a tuba on my shoulder. It was a match right from the start and, from that day forward, my life has revolved around school band. I earned my Bachelor of Music Education from South Dakota State University, marching with the Pride of the Dakotas for the 2000 Independence Day parade in Washington D.C. as well as in the 2003 Tournament of Roses Parade. Upon graduation I taught in rural South Dakota schools for 4 years before packing up and moving to Los Angeles, CA to pursue a career in songwriting. While composing is still a part of what I do as a musician, I missed teaching and took a position with a prestigious middle school music program in San Diego, C
A. I taught individual lessons, small ensembles, and jazz band there for 5 years, before packing up once again and heading for the Twin Cities where, with any luck, I'll once again have a full studio of amazing students!

I continuously perform, write, and play music and I love to tailor lessons toward the goals and interests of each student. I incorporate different styles and techniques that help students at any level be a greater success!

HOW TO BE ABLE TO APPLY YOUR SAXOPHONE PLAYING TO THE REAL WORLD! What I mean by this is that I teach a method of playing saxophone that allows the player to jump into any setting or genre of music right on the spot and instantly be able to play without even having to read music. I have graduated from the University of Northern Iowa having received a degree in music with an emphasis in jazz. I can teach students the normal classical method of how to read music and play for a concert or jazz band but what makes me unique is that I can also teach how to improvise, record, write, network, form a band, and "hang" in most any genre out there. I have been featured on multiple records for different artists, and have been recorded on more than a few dozen published tracks. I have many years of real world experience trying to make it as a musician and have realized that developing a good ear and learning how to improvise was one of the most useful skills to being a saxophone player. I believe ...

About Alex
Hi, there! My name is Alex and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2015 and have loved helping my student learn how to improvise and have fun playing the saxophone in a more creative and self expressed way. I went to the University of Northern Iowa and earned a degree in Music with an emphasis in jazz studies in 2014. I'm a pretty easy going and fun person however I don't let my niceness get in the way of accomplishing our set goals and getting better at the horn. My teaching style is very dynamic in that it is tailored to whatever it is YOU are passionate about with music and finding a way to make great music. Not only could we learn how to play the sax, but I also have experience in writing music, recording, networking, creating and developing a band, and developing your own unique style of music. I look f

About Artyom
Music is wonderful!

I am a professional musician, band conductor, and am currently teaching private and group ensemble for Clarinet, Saxophone and Piano.

I am pleased to announce my new studio at:
2240 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214

This location is easy to access and is just a few minutes from the Hawthorn bridge.

My goal is to help kids grow musically and learn the amazing art of music performance.

I am accepting new students, from beginning to advanced.
I encourage students to focus on musicality, technique and the art of performing. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in quarterly recitals.

Why choose me?
I am not just a teacher, I am a musician who is dedicated to the craft of musicianship. I have a wealth experience with solo and ensemble performances.
Many of my current clarinet
and saxophone students play at Portland Youth Philharmonic and have first seats in their school band. I have a wide range of students (clarinet, saxophone, and piano) and I am the band director at the Russian Gospel Church in Woodburn, Oregon.

BIO:

I started to learn music in my home country, Ukraine, at age 5, and my first instrument was a piano. At the age of 6, I started to attend a special music school for talented kids, named after P.S.Stolyarsky. I studied piano until 4th grade, but then I discovered the clarinet.
From 2004-2008 I was invited to attend international competitions and was awarded 1st and 2nd places. After my second competition, I won a concert tour to the Germany, where I spent 2 weeks, performing the solo recitals.

In 2008, I moved to Kiev Secondary Special Music School - named after N.V.Lysenko- to study more advanced music. From 2008-2012, I became 12 times laureate of the international competitions.

In 2013, my family and I moved to Portland, where I decided to continue my music education at Portland State University. This Spring I will finish my undergraduate degree and then will continue to earn a Master's Degree in Orchestra Conducting.

Please feel free to contact me and ask any questions. I look forward to meeting you and sharing my love of music!
