Drum Lessons in the Twin Cities

The Twin Cities may be known for having 10,000 lakes and wonderful, friendly people, but the region also has an amazing music scene. It's a great place for aspiring musicians and a wonderful place to learn drums, and that's what I'm here for. My name is William, and I teach drum lessons in Minneapolis. If you’re looking to take drum lessons in Saint Paul or Minneapolis, here are a few things to do and see to supplement your lessons in the Twin Cities!

The Twin Cities have a rich and ever-developing musical history. Prince, The Replacements, and Hüsker Dü are just a few of the big names that have come out of the Minneapolis area. Have you ever heard the surf rock hit "Surfin’ Bird?" That's from our local group, The Trashmen. If you’re more of a hip hop fan, there’s Brother Ali, Atmosphere, and Doomtree. Minneapolis boasts an awesome singer-songwriter scene and includes artists like Caroline Smith and Jeremy Messersmith, and bands like Now, Now and Poliça.

In addition to the famous musical acts, there's also a thriving local music scene. When you're learning drums, it's always great to check out other artists for inspiration, and there's no shortage of live music in Minneapolis. There are shows at different venues every night of the week. You can catch national touring acts and local groups at venues like First Ave & 7th Street Entry, the Turf Club, the Cedar Cultural Center, and the Triple Rock Social Club. Check out their websites below: http://first-avenue.com/ http://turfclub.net/ http://www.thecedar.org/ http://www.triplerocksocialclub.com/

It's wonderful to live in a community where music is part of the culture and lifestyle. Do you want to unleash your creativity in this supportive environment? It’s time to get out there! Start attending shows and find out what kind of music inspires you while taking drum lessons in Saint Paul or Minneapolis. There's lots of places to experience jazz, folk, rock, hip hop, electronica, and classical music.

So now it’s time for you to make your own contribution to the rich Twin Cities music scene. Not sure how to get started? Well, that's where a private drum teacher comes in. There are lots of great teachers to choose from if you want to take drum lessons in Saint Paul or Minneapolis. So, what are you waiting for?

Good luck, and have fun!

Beginner
I'm not currently taking beginner drum students. Please refer to my studio partner Andrew:
https://takelessons.com/profile/andrew-i5

Intermediate
Start to learn about polyrhythms as well as developing your ears and body to play songs more accurately. Start to spice up your playing with ways that are interesting, but not intrusive.

Advanced
Really push your polyrhythms and add asymmetrical meters to your repertoire to expand your grasp of complex rhythms. Also learn to use dynamics, cymbal work, and fills to effectively communicate and lead a band without words.

About Jesse
*Disclaimer*
I'm currently not taking beginner students on guitar, bass, drums, piano, or ukulele. I highly recommend my studio partners Andrew and Melissa though. Please check out their profiles for the following topics:

My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Are
a.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar classes in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio along.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have the "Young Musicians Showcase" every few months where individual students and band classes have a chance to perform and celebrate their accomplishments with friends and family.
Adult students occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Multiple Music Stands

*P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, and a Banjo

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

- Professional Musician
- Flexible teaching style (written notation, ear training, play-a-long songs)
- Patient & fun learning environment

About John
I have spent the past 12 years teaching, recording and gigging all across the country. I'm a full-time musician, currently splitting my time between teaching drums and touring with indie rock band Step Rockets (www.steprockets.com).

I started drumming at the age of 10, honing my chops under the tutelage of drummer/vibraphonist Steve Roehm, member of the acclaimed Twin Cities jazz trio, The New Standards. I continued my musical education at St. Olaf College, where I played drums in the college's nationally accredited Jazz One ensemble while studying percussion with jazz veterans Phil Hey and Dave Hagedorn. I then spent three years teaching students in St. Paul Public Schools while developing a strong base of private drum students in and around the Twin Cities. I have a thorough understanding of drumming technique coupled with an in-
depth knowledge of different styles and genres, which I've accumulated through playing with a vast variety of bands and ensembles. Check out my website (http://synhavsky.tumblr.com/) for more information about my musical endeavors.

I love sharing my passion for drums with people of all ages and musical backgrounds. I provide a fun and stimulating learning environment in which students can foster their drum skills and grow their love of music.

Ive been working with Eric for over a year now and I can't recommend him enough. Whether you are looking to play guitar recreationally or professionally Eric is the person you want to help hone your skills. As someone who has tried to teach myself and failed I can say that after working with Eric not only do I understand music itself astronomically better but I also am able to produce music on a creative level that would have taken years to achieve without Eric. Lastly, to anyone who is on edge of whether they need a teacher or not, the answer is YES, absolutely and you won't find anyone better than Eric.

19 Years playing experience, 9 years of teaching, stage performance, technique, rudiments, drills, fills, all styles, specializes in rock, funk, hip-hop and R&B.

About Colin
Colin has 20 years of experience spanning all genre's and styles of music. Countless hours of stage performance with bands. A love, drive and passion for music and drumming you won't find in any other instructor! Multiple studio recordings both behind the mixing board and behind the drum set. 10 years of teaching experience, realizing the importance of setting a unique curriculum for each student tailored to fit each individual's goals and interests. I have been involved in bands ever since middle school, starting with rock, and moving on to perform in country bands, hip-hop performances, indie rock bands, and progressive rock bands. A strong knowledge of jazz techniques and music theory as well as the ability to read drum sheet music make me a perfect instructor for any student.
I have had many beginner and intermediate level student's
and have become proficient in determining what skills each individual student needs to work on as well as helping students progress in their interests, keeping the lessons fun and the student motivated. I can easily transcribe any song as well! So any song you might want to learn, even if there is no sheet music, is totally doable. I love working in odd time signatures and I prefer fancy hi-hat work over heavy double-bass drum use. Progressive / Indie rock is my favorite genre of music to play, but I have tons of fun playing hip-hop, punk, metal, I dabble in jazz, Latin rhythms, and pretty much anything else. I'm always excited to play drums, and I pass this excitement on in my teachings.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons and curriculum's are built around a students experience level, age, and goals. Students will learn the fundamentals of drumming, as well as the ability to add flair and pizzazz to their playing. Within the first 3 months, a beginning level student will have the ability to play basic beats found in many styles of music, as well as feeling comfortable playing to a metronome and keeping time. Lessons will include routines to be practiced by the student on their own time, as well as fun, exciting techniques to keep students interested and motivated to continue playing.
Each Lesson will hold its own highlights depending on the student. I believe getting to know the student and their goals for their drumming is one of the most important aspects of teaching lessons. Understanding whether the student is looking to drum as a hobby and for fun will change the lesson style dramatically compared to a student looking to make a living off drumming. The types of routines, styles and techniques taught should fit into helping the student reach their desired destination.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the basement, full band rehearsal set up with 2 drum kits, one for the student, one for the teacher in an acoustically treated room.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect the student to have a drum set and drum sticks. I can provide a drum set for lessons but it is important for the student to have a drum set or practice pad to practice.

*** Specialties ***
I have touched on almost every genre of music. I specialize in rock, progressive rock and fusion.

We play drums because we want to have fun, so I always have my lessons centered around what ever the student wants to learn. We might learn some of your favorite songs, or figure out that really cool fill you heard. On top of that, I try to challenge my students and give them things that they're not used to, or go outside their box, so to speak. We'll also talk about music theory because I feel its important for students to know.

I love to play drums and I'm excited to teach you! I have 12 years of experience playing drums set and percussion, and 6 years of teaching experience. I can teach many different styles on the drum set and hand drums (doumbek, darbuka, conga, bongo, djembe, etc)

About Devin
I am a drummer/percussionist in the greater Minneapolis-St. Paul area. I have been playing drums for 12 years as a part of many groups and ensembles, including cover bands, original bands, percussion ensembles, orchestras, and world music groups. I am proficient in many different percussion instruments. I am well versed in jazz, pop, rock, metal, classical, world (Latin, Arabic, etc), and other genres. I earned a bachelors degree in music from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, MN. Although percussion and drum set were my main focus, I took part in many aspects of music; emphasizing in composition and new media programs as well.

I teach students ranging from child to adult. With the exception of basic rudiments, technique, and other time keeping knowledge, I primarily give student led lessons; guiding the student when needed wit
h questions and answers. I have found this to be the most productive, as the student remains actively engaged with the lesson. I incorporate other instruments into my lessons; this helps the student understand music as a whole and how their parts fits in. For example, I often reference other percussion instruments and melody instruments when listening to recordings. I also will play simple bass or piano lines to accompany the drum set groove played by the student. With todays technology, I stress the importance of recording and critiquing oneself. I offer this as a part of my lessons.

I love playing drums and I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you!
