My grandson is 8. He dreams about learning to play the trumpet. Today was his first lesson from Mr. Tom Cross. The lesson was delivered perfectly at his level. With positive reinforcement. Clear direction. Humor. All the way home my grandson smiled!

About Jesse
*Disclaimer*
I'm currently not taking beginner students on guitar, bass, drums, piano, or ukulele. I highly recommend my studio partners Andrew and Melissa though. Please check out their profiles for the following topics:

My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Are
a.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar classes in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio along.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have the "Young Musicians Showcase" every few months where individual students and band classes have a chance to perform and celebrate their accomplishments with friends and family.
Adult students occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Multiple Music Stands

*P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, and a Banjo

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

You will be shown how to be a great fundamental trombone player while having fun at the same time. I want to give you the tools and skills you need to play ANY type of music on your horn.

About Tate
Hello! My name is Tate Hearn and I want to teach you what YOU want to learn. I have been teaching for about 5 years to kids and adults all around the world. I have helped adults learn what they have always wanted to learn as well as kids getting awards in competitions such as UIL events.

I graduated with a major in Jazz Studies in Trombone Performance from The University of Texas State in San Marcos. Shortly after graduation, I became a Trombone Player for Royal Caribbean International. Within a year, I had climbed the ranks to Musical Director where I scheduled and managed all of the bands on board as well as still holding the trombone chair in the Orchestra. After, I composed and arranged some music for the Orchestra on board, the fly on guest entertainers started to hire me to write their shows and eventually Royal Caribbean was hi
ring me to write music for their shows. I am still performing regularly in Austin and surrounding areas.

I can wait to meet you!

Tate has been incredible with my 11 year old son. He has patiently introduced the basics of the trombone in an age appropriate way. Tate is very encouraging and never focuses on the mistakes but builds him up on what he is doing correctly so that my son gains the confidence to play the trombone in a group setting for 6th grade band. Tate relates well to kids by using their language and being in their world. I would imagine lots of people can play an instrument but not as many can break it down to the fundamentals and teach it. Tate does this very well.

Professional experience performing on trombone alongside other trombone luminaries (eg. Wayne Wallace from Patois Records) dating back to 2013, and in instructing students as young as 11.

Within the first few lessons, you'll know to play with a full and beautiful sound, and as time goes on you'll be able to get around the instrument with confidence. I specialize in jazz (both big band and playing with a combo), and typically use the Arbans book or adaptations from Flexus to advance your progress.

I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Matthew
I'm a multi-instrumentalist and composer with two degrees earned concurrently from Indiana University--one a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the College of Arts and Sciences, the other a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from the internationally renowned Jacobs School of Music.

My instrumental ability has allowed me to take professional tours both nationally and internationally as a sideman (Durand Jones and the Indications, Indiana Jazz Exchange), and my writing for large ensemble has been featured by multiple groups (Sean Imboden Large Ensemble, Liberation Music Collective).

I'm very passionate about helping people realize their own internal goals, no matter how far off they may seem to them. I already feel we can work together to help you do it, and we haven't even met yet! My mix of academic training, professional experience, an
d natural affability make the learning experience easy, stress-free and fun.

I can teach you how to:
1) play trumpet
2) play trombone
3) play drums
4) understand and internalize music theory
5) improvise, from absolute beginner to professional-tier tips and tricks
6) write music for all sizes of ensembles (solo singer-songwriter to 18-piece big band)

Styles I've got professional experience playing: rock, funk, soul, R&B, jazz (combo), jazz (big band), and classical.

Let's learn together!
