Chris grew up hearing his dad play guitar around the house and at live shows. He “caught the bug” around age 13 and hasn’t stopped playing since! He’s been teaching guitar since 2003 and received his Bachelor of Arts in Music at North Central University in 2008 where he studied jazz, blues, rock, classical, songwriting, and church music. He’s taught about two dozen lessons a week for the better part of 10 years; from age 8 to retiree, beginner to advanced, hobbyist to college-prep or gig-ready. He specializes in blues, rock, improvisation, ‚Äčand songwriting. What he loves most about teaching is being able to pass on everything he has learned and continues to learn in his 20+ years as a musician, helping students take step after step to achieve their musical goals. As an active musician, Chris has been the lead singer/songwriter/rhythm guitarist for a local rock band and has performed/recorded as the lead guitarist for a number of other bands/artists. He currently plays lead guitar for ...

My 15 year-old son started guitar this summer. He has truly enjoyed working with Chris. Chris is patient and encouraging, as well as being a cool guy that my son looks up to.

My 13-years old son was reluctant to take music lessons. He had not liked piano (with a different instructor) when he was younger, but agreed to try guitar. Since the first trial lesson, he has been excited to learn more!

Chris is a fun teacher who knows his stuff and who communicates well with both his students and their parents. I have three kids and have found it’s difficult to find a teacher who is responsive to parents + engaging with youth + gifted at music.

His rates are very reasonable for our area. His in-home lesson space is professional and comfortable — I get to sit on a comfy couch and get work done during my son’s weekly lesson. In addition, Chris goes above and beyond to make sure the lessons are meeting our expectations. He tracked down strings for us when we accidentally broke one. He has rescheduled lessons due to our busy schedules. He is genuinely kind and such a pleasure to work with — we couldn’t be more thrilled!
Brian
Our kids have loved working with Chris. He picks songs they're excited to play, teaches them patiently, and has a lot of fun with them. They've made a ton of progress since they started with Chris, and they're always excited to see him!

I’ve developed a unique approach to understand the guitar and bass. Whether someone is a beginner or even advanced. I’ve found a way that gives new insight to the instrument.

Even those who are advanced have commented, “My playing has gotten so much better – people are complimenting me on how much I’ve improved.” and… “You’ve really opened up the instrument to me.” One former student who had been playing 50 years prior to coming to Oslo Studio said, “I’ve learned more from you in the past 6 months than my last 30 years of playing!”

I’ve learned a lot from my students as well. Due to my open style of teaching. I’ve designed alternate ways for students to learn their instrument.

When I started teaching I was pretty set on each student having to learn how to read music. However, I found not everyone had this desire. This has led me to design different ways to learn music. I teach students ways to understand where the notes exist on the neck by reading chord charts and seeing ...

"I've been taking acoustic guitar lessons with Jimmy for a year and a half. When I started with Jimmy, I had no music theory background... none. I know I still have a lot more to learn, but now I am familiar with concepts including modes, constructing the diatonic major scale, sharps and flats, the circle of fourths and fifths... the list goes on. Jimmy has even guided me through transposing a chord progression. I could go on, but to summarize, because of Jimmy's teaching style, willingness to answer questions, and music knowledge, I now know a lot about how music works. :-)"

"I’m a peer of Matt’s. Matt is very knowledgeable about all things guitar. He specializes in heavy metal and harmonic minor lead guitar, but can show you much more than just that. I’ve seen Matt use alternate tunings like Led Zepelin or Rolling Stones do to create something completely different sounding than standard tuning. I substitute for him on occasion, and his students are on a method book and a song to play each week. Students showed me what they were working on, and it appeared Matt wrote out every song the student was interested in week to week. From my experience as a teacher, this helps the student stay motivated to play and continue their practicing/studies if they genuinely like the song they are working on."

"I have been taking lessons with Jimmy for 3 months now and have learned so much in that time. I was excited to learn the acoustic guitar, but a bit nervous since I have never taken any type of musical lesson or have ever had any success with learning an instrument. Jimmy's patience and fun personality put me at ease right away. I am an elementary teacher of over 20 years, so I could tell that I had made the right choice in coming to Jimmy for lessons. Jimmy takes the time to teach music theory, which I appreciate, and answers any questions that have. He is a very dedicated musician whose experience and knowledge become apparent as he teaches his students, and when you view his studio. He is very reliable, always getting back to me quickly when I correspond with him. If I have had to change lesson days due to weather or family commitments, he is always understanding and flexible. I highly recommend him to other perspective students and look forward to growing as a musician with him as my teacher!"

His enthusiasm is infectious, and his knowledge of multiple instruments and musical genres makes him a well-rounded instructor who can adapt to each child's interests and goals. I have been amazed at the progress my son has made this year on the guitar. He was even inspired to start vocal lessons half way through the year."

"Why would anyone defame such a wonderful teacher? He is so dedicated and follows through with his lessons by consistently sending links all through the week that helps with understanding all you need to know about musical sounds. Its been an intriguing experience for me. Pay no attention to anonymous critics; they choose to remain anonymous not to help you, but to help themselves. I would recommend James to anyone seriously interested in honing their skills in the acoustic guitar. Cheers!"
