I began piano lessons at four years of age, and was blessed to have an amazing piano teacher, who taught me for 14 years. She gave me a passion to teach others and impart to them a love for music. I have carried on that calling and taught hundreds of adults and children over the last 30 years. I am very thorough in my method and customize each lesson around the goals and dreams of each student. I incorporate theory, ear training and technical into all my lessons, regardless of the style of music they are learning. I have experience in the professional music world as a pianist and french horn player, performing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera Chorus and Orchestra, Sydney Sinfonia, Sydney Philharmo
nic Orchestra and Choir, as well as productions of "Cats", "Phantom of the Opera", Sesame Street, and touring all over Australia, U.S.A. and Israel. I have also been a part of the worship teams at Hillsong Church and C3 Church Australia.

I studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and also received my Licentiate Diploma from the Trinity College of London (L.T.C.L.) in French Horn (Teaching) and Licentiate Diploma from the Trinity College of London (L.T.C.L.) in Piano (Performance). So my experience not only comes from an inspiring teacher, but also from hundreds of performances on stages across the world working with the finest of musicians, singers, conductors and worship leaders.

I love music, and more so, love imparting it to others.

Students come away from their lessons inspired and excited about their ability to accomplish their dreams. Whether it is to play 'Phantom of the Opera' or an Adele song, Debussy's Claire De Lune or Jingle Bells, I show them how to do it and help them get there. lessons in teachers home, just had my first lesson.. I'm older student so very nervous.. want to just learn to have fun with grand kids on the Piano we've had for years sitting in the living room. Teacher was relaxed and understood my goals and set out to help me meet them... listened to my needs.

About Tom
My goal is to provide insight along your path as a trumpeter. In addition to preparing for performances and auditions, I encourage spending time on your favorite songs, and enjoy learning with them with you (often by transcribing the material). Bio-

Tom Gershwin is a bandleader, trumpeter, and composer based in Denver, Colorado.

In 2015, Tom was selected to be in KUVO’s 30 under 30 series, which featured young musicians contributing to the jazz scene in Colorado.

​Tom has recorded two full length jazz albums: “Sweet Pastimes”, a duo project featuring classic standards, and “Live at Mighty Fine”, a quintet performing collaborative compositions and improvisations. Tom's current six piece group has been featured at Nocturne, the Five Points Jazz
Festival, the Estes Park Jazz Festival, and Dazzle Jazz.

As a freelance trumpeter, Tom has performed and/or recorded with The Temptations, John Batiste, Father John Misty, Chris Potter, One Republic, DeVotchKa, Leftover Salmon, Juno winner Jayme Stone, and Portugal. The Man at venues including Red Rocks Amphitheater, the Blue Note, and City Park Jazz.

​Tom has been a faculty member of the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts (CCJA) since 2016.

​Tom’s professional career began in the United States Army Band, where he performed for 3 years across the Pacific Northwest and Japan. He was promoted to sergeant before receiving an honorable discharge. He received his jazz performance degrees from CU Boulder (undergraduate) and NYU (master’s). At NYU, Tom also served as an adjunct faculty member of the Jazz Department.

I will guide you to your goals. I write my own materials for each student's individual goals. If you want to learn a song and I don't know it, I will learn the song with you, sharing the process. After several months of study, you will have an understanding of not only what to practice, but how and why to practice.

Tom was AWESOME! I had a heck of a time finding someone who actually teaches Bugle. I have only had one lesson with Tom however, I am very excited to continue with him. Tom did not rush anything, he didnt watch the clock, he actually wanted to do more playing than talking about this form, music theory etc. etc. I had experienced with other Teachers. Everyone wants to start playing "something" as soon as possible and Tom dove right in to playing or trying to get me to play, HaHa in just the first 20min.

As I child I had an early interest in music, dancing and creative things. I took piano lessons and excelled at my chosen instrument, the flute, in band at school. I continued with my music training at Northwestern College in Roseville, Minnesota and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Music Education in 1992. I worked for 11 years in my profession in various settings before I took a break to start my family. My experience includes teaching students in classroom general music, choir, band, piano lessons, and school plays/musicals. I spent six years at a private school (grades K-8), three years at a charter elementary school and 2 years at a public elementary school. Also, since graduating in 1992 I have spent a total of 18 years teaching private lessons both at Hovland Conservatory of Music and in my home. Along the way I
further broadened my background by accompanying church choirs and congregations, playing for weddings, and volunteering to lead children’s music time at church.

I love music of all kinds and have a strong belief that everyone should experience the joy and power of it in his or her life. It is very rewarding for me to help students develop their skills as they discover a meaningful way of self-expression using a universal language. Teaching music is something I love to do and I know that fact reflects to my students resulting in an enjoyable experience for them as well.

What can a student/parent expect from lessons with me? I can provide my students with a solid foundation of proper technique. This is so very important because you do not ever want to have to unlearn bad habits. I also include appropriate music theory, ear training and improvising for each level. I purposefully pace the lessons to prevent students from feeling frustrated. Instead, I work to generate excitement about the learning process and keep students motivated by their own progress. Furthermore, I am willing to accommodate a student if they have a special interest in a certain musical genre or a personal goal they are working towards. I encourage, but do not require students to take advantage of recital and performance opportunities that I provide.

I have a lot of experience teaching students who are brand new to their instrument. I believe the beginning is a very important time to start building a solid foundation for all future musical growth. I love being able to help my students establish good habits from the beginning and influence the overall direction of a new student’s musical experience.

I love music of all kinds and have fun playing and teaching all the instruments that I listed. However, the two instruments that I have the most training on and have performed on are the piano and the flute. I would be a great teacher for private lessons to help a student excel in band at school or for a high school student preparing for contests or auditions. Also, I am very patient with beginners and would be ideal as a child'€™s first piano teacher or for an adult who has always wanted to play a certain instrument of his or her choice.

My grandson is 8. He dreams about learning to play the trumpet. Today was his first lesson from Mr. Tom Cross. The lesson was delivered perfectly at his level. With positive reinforcement. Clear direction. Humor. All the way home my grandson smiled!

About Caleb
Caleb moved from his hometown of Wichita, Kansas, to Chicago in 2008 to attend DePaul University, where he received his Bachelor’s in Trumpet Performance studying under Matt Lee and Tage Larsen. Since then, Caleb has picked up a variety of regular gigs across a wide spectrum of styles, genres, and types of events.

Caleb performs in Chicago with soul-pop band The Right Now, the progressive Pocket Radio, the soulful Bassel and the Supernaturals, the genre-defying Willy Dynomite, the Latin-grooved Contrabanda, and funk outfit Nasty Snacks. He has played in horn sections for Latin, funk, and big-band jazz bands, as well as Afrobeat, indie rock, R&B/soul, and hip-hop/rap groups.

He has also played the national anthem for the president at opening night of the Chicago Bulls season, been featured at Chicago Blackhawks games, principal trump
et in symphony orchestras, pit orchestras and in the DePaul Screamin’ Demons Pep Band at Madison Square Garden. Caleb also regularly lends his solo talents to wedding parties and church services, and is one-fourth of the Chicago for-hire horn section Revolution Horns. Other musical endeavors include a performance on the Steve Harvey Show, playing trumpet for the Broadway musical I Love Lucy in downtown Chicago, and a coveted chance to perform in master classes for his idols Adolph “Bud” Herseth and Chris Martin.

Caleb has been teaching privately in the Chicago area for 6 years now and is eager to teach students with any amount of experience, especially those who are eager to approach music from a variety of perspectives.

I believe that the best way to teach a brass instrument at any level, is simply to check in and make sure that the student has a great understanding of what a beautiful sound is on their instrument. This is done in a patient and positive environment, filled with the best possible music making to serve as a model to aspire to. With small, attainable goals and encouragement to practive at least a small amount on a daily basis, you cannot help of improve, and hopefully have a good time playing whatever music interests you while doing so. The journey is a bit different for everyone, but anyone can make a beautiful sound, and go from there!

I like to strike a balance of teaching out of various method books(depending on the student and their level of ability, some are more suitable than others of course and I help guide the way), and learning to play by ear, which can be almost anything the student wants to learn, provided it's not overly complicated for them. Technique has it's place, but is certainly not the whole story. Learning music that is fun, while at the same time learning to get better at your instrument, makes the overall process enjoyable and rewarding. Once you have the right tools, music is something that can be fulfilling for the rest of your life, especially when you learn to do it in a fun and healthy way.

I am interested in teaching you what you need and want to learn so that you achieve your dreams. Please note that I only take serious students who will practice at least 30 minutes every day or 35 a day 6 days a week at home. I would like you to keep a log of how much you practice. This will enable you to make progress through the curriculum as you will be a beginner for the first 3.3 years, an intermediate for the next 3.3 years, and then an advanced student for 3.3 years. I will give you assignments to do over the week, and the next week we will go over them, learn something new and get new assignments. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert!

Christian completed his MM in Jazz performance at New Jersey City University. There he studied saxophone with Bob Malach, Joel Weiskopf, Walt Weiskopf, Allen Farnham, and Nathan Eklund. He also studied flute and clarinet with Ed Joffe. He actively played gigs in the New York City and suburban area while at school.

I am a life-long musician, performing with my vocalist mother from age 4 and studying piano and voice for all of my childhood. However, it all changed the day my 5th grade band teacher put a tuba on my shoulder. It was a match right from the start and, from that day forward, my life has revolved around school band. I earned my Bachelor of Music Education from South Dakota State University, marching with the Pride of the Dakotas for the 2000 Independence Day parade in Washington D.C. as well as in the 2003 Tournament of Roses Parade. Upon graduation I taught in rural South Dakota schools for 4 years before packing up and moving to Los Angeles, CA to pursue a career in songwriting. While composing is still a part of what I do as a musician, I missed teaching and took a position with a prestigious middle school music program in San Diego, C
A. I taught individual lessons, small ensembles, and jazz band there for 5 years, before packing up once again and heading for the Twin Cities where, with any luck, I'll once again have a full studio of amazing students!

My students learn how to extend their range up and down the horn, broaden their tonal and dynamic palette of sound, and gain confidence and endurance in their playing abilities. Through coaching and creative imagination, I empower my students to reduce performance anxiety and develop more comfort and control in playing the trumpet. My students benefit also from learning techniques I’ve developed such as informed sight reading, transposition freedom, tone enhancement, breath control, ornamentation and improvisation.
I have great teachers to thank from the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, Philadelphia Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic and other orchestras, as well as trumpet soloists who shaped and broadened my knowledge over many years of study. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with my own method based on fundamental approach to trumpet playing, such as Arban, Maggio, Collin and Clark methods. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level
