I tackle students' individual problems instead of sticking to a book. I've been teaching privately for over 5 years and my students have excelled in whatever audition or challenge they are preparing for. I teach my students how to get the most out of their practice time, which is crucial to refining technique.

My major instrument in college was clarinet, but I am a woodwind specialist, having performance experience on flute, clarinet, and saxophone. I have a particular affinity for late beginners, and have had some success in helping these students catch up to their peers. All of my woodwind students use the Rubank method books in addition to any method books they may already be using in their band classes. I also introduce appropriate literature and studies specific to each instrument once the basics have been mastered. I encourage all of my woodwind students to participate in OMEA Solo and Ensemble contest and to audition for OMEA District and State Honor Bands.

I feel that in order for students to have a well-rounded music education they need an excellent role model and an open-minded educator to present their musical learning in a caring and thoughtful manner. Lessons should be taught by someone who is interested in the well-being of their students, has a love of music, is encouraging, and wants to communicate their passion for music.

I teach students ranging in age from 8 through adult. Clarinet lessons begin with breathing exercises using proper posture and scales. Students are free to bring music that they would like to learn as well as method books that I would suggest based on the students level. Some areas that I focus on are correct playing position for holding the instrument, embouchure (the way you shape your mouth around the mouthpiece), sound quality, relaxation, breathing, air support, finger placement, theory, ear training and reading music.

Students should feel comfortable in their lessons and feel free to express ...

I began taking piano lessons with Regan this past fall at the age of 45. Despite having almost no musical background, she welcomed me in and made me comfortable from the start.

My lessons so far have moved at a pace specific to my ability and learning style. They have focused on the basics (reading music, music theory, becoming comfortable at the keyboard...etc.) while also incorporating songs that I know and love.

Now with Covid, my weekly lessons are on FaceTime. I could not be happier that I began taking lessons with Regan. I would certainly recommend her to anyone looking to further their musical knowledge – Regardless of age, experience or skill level.

"Damien is a fantastic teacher! Our daughter will be a high school sophomore when school starts this month. She has been taking clarinet lessons from him for the last two years. Damien gives lessons at her school, but is also flexible enough to come to our home when school is out, or if we need to squeeze in a weekend lesson. He is a talented musician, and as a teacher, Damien is encouraging, thorough, and challenging, in a low-key manner. He wants his students to play with confidence. He is a person of integrity, and respectful to his students--she looks forward to her lessons. Damien has made excellent solo selections for her. With his teaching and guidance, our daughter did very well at the All Region competitions in her 8th and 9th grade years. Lastly, Damien is a good communicator, which is greatly appreciated."

"As a language teacher, I was looking for a clarinet/saxophone instructor with excellent communication skills and the ability to teach musical technique in an empathetic way. I was lucky to find Masaru Koga in Cupertino, California.

I enjoyed weekly lessons for about three years and really reached the point where I was constantly improving my clarinet mastery and getting closer to my performance goals. At one point, I became so enthusiastic, I also began saxophone lessons with Masaru!

I looked froward to meeting him for my weekly lessons and felt he gave more than 100% in patience, encouragement, and musical technique. He has a very warm, giving personality and when we were together, I made great progress and was very motivated to study and practice on my own.

I enthusiastically recommend Masaru Koga to other music students and wish I could be his student again!"

"Davis is a phenomenal teacher. Students who study with him always improve. They are typically 1st chair students in auditioned ensembles. He is kid-friendly and professional. He understands the developmental needs of students, both in and outside of music. David has also been extremely effective running woodwind sectionals at my school. His tips and techniques are beneficial to students and the ensemble."
