As a 57 year old student Rich understands life and its commitments. I enjoy the half an hour with him. My appreciation for music has grown with Rich. He introduces me to material I would have never picked on my own. I am still taking banjo lessons because of Rich.
Thank you Rich. Bob

I play and teach both clawhammer and fingerpicking banjo styles. As a performer, I mostly play traditional and contemporary classical music, though I also have performed and recorded quite a bit of folk music on banjo. I enjoy working with clawhammer students as they create their own arrangements of tunes.

About Mark

I am a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter working in a variety of genres. I regularly perform around the Washington, DC, area as a solo guitarist, as a singer/songwriter, and with numerous classical, folk, rock, and musical theater groups. Mark was very patient yet informative. He pointed out areas to improve upon and complemented me where I had been working hard. I was comfortable with his online lesson because he looked me straight in the eyes as though we were face to face. I know he will teach me how to play my mandolin; so looking forward to the next lesson!

Mark has been a great teacher for this adult beginner! I take lessons in clawhammer banjo and ukulele with him, and his easy-going nature and skill in identifying ways to improve make it a joyful experience! Highly recommend.

Mr. Sylvester is one of the greatest. He is not just an amazing guitarist, but he is also very kind. He treats people with so much respect. He speaks to me and my mom so nicely. He is very patient. He has a deep knowledge of music and knows how to get the most out of even the least talented people (like me!). He doesn't ever get mad if you make a mistake or forget to bring your music notes. We were so lucky to find Mr. Sylvester.

Clawhammer is the sound of the mountains to me, it is pure magic and total fun! I focus on the joy of music, lessons are meant to be fun and unstressed, like playing out on the lawn on a cool evening.

About Kyle

I am a music lover first and foremost, my roots are in mountain music, clawhammer banjo specifically. That music captured me from an early age and I hit the ground running with it. Though it didn't take long before I picked up other genres and instruments. Classical guitar quickly became one of my f

I've played guitar since I was eight years old and various other stringed instruments for several years. I love the banjo sound and played a bit on my original album Heliotropism. I'd love to help novice players get their feet wet with the instrument, strumming and plucking away at their favorite songs.

About Gio

I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums. I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is wha

"Mike has done a great job teaching me. In a year and a half, I have gone from never playing a stringed instrument, to being able to jam with friends and family. I learned basic three-finger Scruggs style bluegrass banjo, and I making moves now to become an intermediate player. I really recommend Mike. He is kind and warm-hearted, and works with you to meet you where you are and improve your game. I now know about 10 songs that I can play lead on, and I can roll or vamp as back-up on any other bluegrass song. Mike has set me up now to work with intermediate techniques. Mike will help you learn!"

Are Heavy Metal Banjos The Next Big Thing?

Loud, jangly, and twangy, the banjo is an instrument with a distinctive voice that immediately evokes the spirit of the American South. Long a mainstay of bluegrass music, banjos have recently been incorporated into pop music as well by bands like Mumford and Sons. And, if YouTube trends are any indication, it looks like the banjo is making another genre shift! A pack of viral videos featuring banjo covers of hard rock classics are making the rounds and proving that banjos can shred just a …
