By Michael B. - Minneapolis Voice Teacher
It's been almost a year that I've lived in the Twin Cities metro area, and it's causing me to look back on the time I've spent here - good food, good people, and outstanding music. The entire Minneapolis-St. Paul area is riddled with concert venues, bars, opera houses, concert halls, colleges and universities, theaters, and clubs (need I say more?) bursting at the seams with eager performers and reasonable admission prices, sometimes even free. Whether you are taking singing lessons in Minneapolis or simply a fan of live music, going to a show, concert or performance is always a great way to kick back after a long day's work - and if you don't watch out, you could end up learning a thing or two.
In my studio, I am a huge advocate of jumping in with both ears. Going out and listening to local musicians and performers is a fun way to keep the educational process flowing. It keeps students' end goals in sight, gives them something to work toward, and also helps shape their preference for the sound/style they want to pursue. Seeing a show can often take the pressure off of individual study and can breathe some creative initiative in the mind. It is very easy to get one-dimensional with studies in private singing lessons in Minneapolis - keeping good posture, correct notes, rhythm, and a concert can be a welcome change of pace for a student. Sometimes we forget about the end result: enjoying the experience.
Inevitably, going to a show is about enjoying the experience, and supporting our colleagues and friends in the arts. It is the audience that drives the prevalent music scene in the Twin Cities as much as the performers. So as the spring and summer approach, get out there and support local music of all shapes and sizes; in addition to your enjoyment of the performance, it adds to your musical education.
I've taught students who feel they are tone deaf and just want to be able to sing to their child to students who are trying to make it as a professional singer. I do not teach classical voice. I teach you to find your own natural voice and instill it with the fundamentals of singing from your core, with breath support and with expression. I make it fun and safe to explore. The students I teach the most are singer/songwriters or people who want to accompany themselves on guitar doing their favorite songs.
I have a Bachelor's in Voice from SUNY Fredonia, a Masters Degree from the Manhattan School of Music and have study several methods and styles of singing.
Our voice is the most personal expression we can share. I feel very passionate about helping others create a personalized 'toolkit' of exercises designed to promote proper posture, ease of breath support and help guide the vocal explorer in developing their most perfect resonance and pitch control. The end result is the ability to sing, speak, stand and move with relaxed authenticity by encouraging a calmly energized physical demeanor which increases confidence.
My foundation is bel canto technique; to expand range, create full tone, sing with ease & power, build breath support & learn to maintain vocal health.
Additionally, we learn shape the vowel sound to change the 'color', to produce a rock, pop, R&B, classical or legit style.I've taught voice for over 16 years, backed by a lifetime of performing & 12 years of private vocal studies. I also lived and worked in Los Angeles for 12 years.
I am committed to helping people develop their authentic, unique voice.
