About Josiah
At the age of four, after watching a group of children playing their violins on the television show, “Sesame Street”, I became inspired to learn how to play the violin. Since that time I have studied violin with Daniel Vega-Albela, Dr. Joseph Koob and Renata Knific. In 2006, I graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Studies. During my undergraduate studies, I learned beginning jazz guitar and improvisation from jazz guitarist, John Riemer. Leading up to my attending WMU, I had participated in Master Classes with Sally O’Reilly, Dr. Barry Ross, Stephen Clapp, Benny Kim, Katie Lansdale, David Barg, and Ronda Cole. I was a member of the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony for five years and I was the concertmaster during my senior year. I also won the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony’s soloist competition duri
ng my senior year of High School. I was a featured youth soloist with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra during their youth concerts in 2003. I also performed as a soloist on WMUK’s radio program, “Bravo!” I played in the Western Michigan University Symphony Orchestra for two years. Over the years I have attended several different summer music institutes including “Aria” in Muncie, Indiana, “Steven’s Point” in Steven’s Point, Wisconsin, “Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp” in Muskegon, Michigan, and “Sound Encounters” in Ottawa, Kansas.

In addition to playing classical and jazz music, I thoroughly enjoy the music of the fiddle. I have played fiddle with a few different bands in Chicago, IL, Virginia Beach, VA and Southwest Michigan. I have played in numerous pit orchestras for musical theater productions in the Southwest Michigan area.

In addition to being an accomplished musician, I have been happily teaching music lessons for the past six years. As a Certified Suzuki teacher, I believe in providing a positive, nurturing environment for my students to learn. I am committed to providing a friendly approach to teaching music lessons. I strive to make the learning process fun and interesting for them. I respect my students. I love helping each one of them find creative ways to achieve their unique set of musical goals. I teach classical, jazz, bluegrass and rock music.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons take place in a large class room at a local church conveniently located right off of I-94. There is a lobby area with chairs where the parents can wait. Parents can also watch their younger children in the nursery area.

To start: If you don't already have an instrument, I will help you find a nice one and the proper equipment. I will also provide you with recordings of the music that you will be learning. I believe that listening to your pieces ahead of time is a great help when it comes time to learn them.

During your first three to six months of lessons, I will discover your main learning style. For example, you may learn music more easily using a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic approach. You will have lots of fun developing a beautiful tone on your instrument as we focus our attention on developing your technique. I will show you how to practice the music on your own so that you can make the most of your practice time. Your confidence and self-esteem will increase as you build a repertoire of music from the very beginning of our time together.

As you progress in your musical skills and artistic development, you will become fluent in performing your favorite pieces. Each lesson contains technical and musical points covered in a carefully thought out, step-by-step progression. You will eventually gain the skills and knowledge to play your instrument at whatever proficiency level you desire. When teaching, I divide skills into smaller units so that you will always be successful. I like to give you immediate, honest, and specific feedback after each time you play your instrument for me. I always respect my students and acknowledge the effort that they put forth.

Since music reading skills take time to become equal to playing skills, I usually teach music reading skills after the first six to eight months of lessons.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Classrooms in building, space for parents to wait in lobby, nursery for parents with younger children.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching fiddle and the classical Suzuki violin and viola method.

there are many clarinet players. Some are good, few can teach, and a minuscule amount are both. You have just found one of those few. This man has judged at international competitions, and has incredible patience and memory. He has studied under an understudy of the founder of the american school of thought for clarinetists, and always knows what you need to know, even if you are only in 8th grade.

This is the one.

David is flexible and geared towards the needs of the individual student. I am returning to the clarinet after more than a 40-year absence and he is able to accommodate my requirements. He is friendly and makes the student feel at ease. I look forward to more lessons with him.

I feel privileged to be able to write this review. David was my son Sunil's saxophone instructor throughout middle and high school, and his supporter through college. Under David's expert instruction Sunil earned the award for Pennsylvania All State Musician in alto sax as a high school senior. In addition to David's incredible expertise in performance music and his high level teaching skills, he is a very generous and patient and caring person. Over the course of years David became a true friend to Sunil, and to our whole family. I would recommend David to any music student unconditionally.

Hello there, I'm Austin Lowrance. Raised on a balanced musical diet of classic rock and 90's country, I received my first guitar in elementary school and began taking the instrument seriously around 12 years old. I've been performing live for the better part of the last decade, and have taken various college level music courses as well. In fact, I still take lessons from time to time from master guitarists like Redd Volkeart; Guitar is an instrument where there is always more to learn. I can help you learn anything from how to strum along to a country song, rock out your favorite AC/DC riffs, or even study the ins and outs of the brilliant technique of master players like Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Brad Paisley, or Brent Mason. I can also teach you music theory as it applies to the guitar; such as how to read music, build and
name chords (and why they work), scales and arpeggios (and how to use them in your playing), as well as an understanding of rhythm and time (a shortcoming of many aspiring guitarists!). I look forward to working with you!

Hey there! I'm glad you're here :) If you're on this sight, it probably means you're passionate about music! So look at that, we already have something in common. Or no? Perhaps your just curious. Maybe you have always wanted to see how people can make a metal tube sing, or perhaps your precious child has been BEGGING you to take lessons but you're unsure because you know you wont be able to help them? I get it, and you are still in the right place.

I grew up around music, and was always so in love with the arts. I did everything from dance to painting but nothing compared to the profound experience of making music. Music has influenced my life in so many ways. It has always been a form of release, expression, and passion in times both good and bad. It gave me the opportunity to hear, rather than see, my own hard work bring success. I
t brought me contentment where I never realized I needed it. However, there is one thing that music will never fail to bring to my life, and that is joy. My goal in pursing music is that I can help others experience that same joy, and allow music to have the same amazing impact on them as it did on me.

Sound like something you're interested in? Have questions about my experience? Maybe questions about my method of teaching? Feel free to shoot me a message and I would be so glad to speak with you about any question you may have! Let's meet so we can continue down your musical path together!

About David
My teaching style comes from listening to the direction you want to take music in your life. I learn what your goals are, and I create an individualized lesson plan that involves the desires of the apprentice musician while also including the necessary skills for growing from where you are.

More important than the advanced techniques I can teach in specific genres, I will bring foundational concepts and imperative insight when listening to any song for a play-a-long. I can show you how to break down musical components and hear parts, pick out the notes, and learn everything you need to bring the music you love to life. My goal with each lesson is to leave a student feeling empowered and inspired with the right things at the right times. Music is a journey, and that's an experience that can't be rushed.

I can relate to a lot of pro
blems that you might be having. I’ve been there before, and can help you through each challenge you face. My students will be heard, and focus will be brought to the root cause of the things you want to improve. Then we will work together to form solutions.

Through these opportunities to make playing fun, I will show you how easy it is to practice the songs you want to play so that they come out sounding how they really should. It will suddenly become easy to fill the gaps in every half-right tab and find the chords by ear as you listen and play along.

You will find elements of the bigger picture coming together in ways you may not have expected. Since music is constantly expanding our own limitations, there is always more we can achieve with it! The path from listener to musician to artist becomes walk-able at your own pace.

I have always wanted to learn an instrument but was always too intimidated, so I didn't know what to expect when I took my first lesson with Luis. But as soon as I met him I could tell he was super laid back and excited that I wanted to learn guitar. I was so relieved he wasn't judgmental of how bad I was, and he seemed genuinely happy to play together. It's also really exciting to see my skills improve.... I wish I would have started earlier!
