Hello Students,
I have been playing most of my life. I started playing professionally at 17, playing with a number of professional bands playing all over Michigan. I have been teaching drum students since the age of 19, teaching well over 500 students to date.

Teaching students has been one of my passions with music. I hope to motivate my students to learn to play and love the drums as much as I do.

I work with each student on an individual basis to help them learn and understand drumming technique using books and techniques that will help to develop instinctive skills and ear technique.

I work with snare drum / rudimental technique with all my students and drum set technique, as most students want to learn how to play a drum set. Many of my students are in school band learning snare drum and percussion technique. Basic snare drum technique is important for any student to master and understand to learn to apply to snare drum and drum set technique.

Building a solid

Serving students of Humboldt County and Online.

I am accepting students of all levels, ages, and instruments. No experienced required. I teach rudimental percussion including quads/tenors and snare drum as well as many world percussion instruments such as Tabla, Atsimevu, Kanjira, Frame Drum, and Riqq. I also teach an extracted language of south and north Indian drumming which includes exercises and ideas that will broaden the rhythmic palette of any instrumentalist. In addition to serving any instrument through a conceptual mind expansion, I teach a universal hand drumming technique that can be imposed on any percussion instrument.

My teaching style is rooted in a traditional and flexible approach designed to serve the needs and goals of my students. From that, I wish to have a fun and relaxed environment for my students to learn. My approach is positively-minded and geared towards developing your own unique voice.

I have been playing drums for over 30 years. I have toured with bands, recorded albums and played with many different musicians. I have also learned to play other instruments such as guitar and piano. And I have found great amazement and wonder while continuously learning on this musical journey. I can give a wide perspective, not just from the drum throne. Drumming can be a very special part of your life. It does not have to be a career, but can be an amazing way to express yourself and learn about the world through many different rhythms and patterns. Music can be very formal, but there's also a lot of room for everyone to learn about improvisation and self expression.

About Robert

I have been playing drums in some form or another for over 30 years. I currently play with a cover band that plays mostly rock from spanning from the 50's to today's music. I have recorded a few albums with bands that I've played with over the years and even toured a little along the way. I have a

"Best instructor I've had in years

I've been taking lessons with Matt for about a year now, and within that time my skill on the drum kit has improved tenfold. Matt teaches with a vast number of strategies to help me understand the lesson and improve my technique. He makes learning an instrument entertaining (as it should be) and not a chore or boring task. Matt is friendly, relatable, timely, and the best drum/percussion instructor I've had in California. 10/10 would recommend."
