Do you love the folky, relaxed feel of the ukulele and want to create that sound yourself? Do you enjoy music and want to pick up an instrument, but don't yet have the confidence to try the six strings of the guitar? Maybe you want to learn to play music, but you simply don't want your first instrument to be super complicated. If any of these scenarios sound like the situation you're in, the ukulele will be perfect for you. When learning the ukulele, we start by learning a few basics about music and several chords. For most students, this phase takes about 3 to 6 weeks, and after that they're playing their own ukulele version of some of their favorite songs. So what are you waiting for? Let's learn to play the uke!

About Chris
A short history of my experience with music and education:

The first instrument I learned to play was the guitar in 2001.

I played the guitar on the worship team at FBC of Midway in Plant City, FL from 2001 to 2005.

I began teaching private music lessons in 2003.

I played bass guitar in a Christian rock band called of Anastasis from 2003 to 2005.

I played acoustic, electric, and bass guitar on the worship team at Family Worship Center in Lakeland, FL from 2006 to 2012.

I worked as a freelance audio engineer with my in-home recording studio throughout college (and now I just do it for fun).

I played bass and sang background vocals in a worship band called Skyline from 2007 to 2009.

I taught music and trained a student led worship team at Hope Christian Academy from 2009-2010.

I began performing independently from
2009 to present.

I played guitar and sang lead vocals in a Christian Rock Band called A Story Familiar from 2010 to 2012.

From 2010 to 2012, I taught in the Polk County public school system of Florida from 2010 to 2012, where I also worked heavily with students with special needs.

In July of 2012 I moved to Aurora, CO as a volunteer musician to help plant Streams Church.

In January of 2013 I married my beautiful wife.

Upon arriving home from our honeymoon, I was hired as Worship Director for Streams church, and I have worked there since. Some of my responsibilities include developing and executing weekly music set lists, creating charts and sheet music for new songs, and training the worship team in new music.

As for me personally, I love Jesus, my wife, and music.  As I'm sure you can tell by my brief history, I do a lot of church service and ministry, if for this for any reason makes you wary, let me assure you: I play a lot more than just church music.  As a lover of music, there is not much that I don't enjoy in the world of music, and I've taught most of it.  I've taught the young and the not-so-young, and whether you're just beginning to read music, or you're just eager to learn your favorite song, I work closely with you to ensure you achieve the results you desire!

*** Lesson Details ***
Four things I focus on:
1. Creating individualized lesson plans for you
2. Teaching you new techniques and polishing old ones
3. Building your confidence
4. Both of us having a fun, rockin' time!

When taking lessons from me, students can expect an environment that is a balance between being strict and laid back.Music is something that must be learned, and as such, it must also be practiced week-to-week in between lessons.  I consider myself strict because I'll hold you accountable to doing your best to learn the best. Despite holding you accountable, I think the overall mood of the learning environment is laid back; we'll have a lot of fun learning music.  I make sure that we'll be learning at your pace, but keep in mind, this doesn't mean I won't push you to be your best! My teaching experience has taught me one thing: everyone is different. That being the case, I create lesson plans that are unique to you.  Where you will be in a month, six months, a year, largely depends on your commitment to learn, but I'll promise you this:  all of my efforts will be utilized to maximize your potentiality.

*** Attendance Policy ***
I am very flexible with attendance, but I do require a one hour notice that you will not be at the lesson. If a one hour notice is not given, the lesson will be marked as "missed" resulting in payment from your TakeLessons account for the missed lesson.

If you are simply running late, please be sure to let me know-I try to be as flexible as possible, but if the student is over 15 minutes late, I typically mark this lesson as "missed" as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I provide the following equipment for in-studio lessons:
Guitar amplifier
Bass amplifier
Drum Set
Computer
iPad
Recording equipment
Music stand
Seating area for parents/guardians to sit/listen in on the lesson

*** Travel Equipment ***
When offering in-home lessons, I provide the following when traveling for in-home lessons: iPad
For in-home lessons, I expect students to have whatever equipment is necessary for learning their instrument of interest (This typically includes at least the student's instrument and a music stand, but may also include a metronome, tuner, etc.).

*** Specialties ***

We've only had 2 lessons so far and he is great! He is encouraging, polite, flexible, kind and takes the extra time if needed. He definitely knows how to teach and knows the natural developmental progression to build the foundation for a beginner and explains what the next goals she'll be working towards. He even learned a Justin Bieber song just to make my kid happy. Lol!

About Bill
Guitarist/Songwriter Bill G. is a versatile and experienced instructor, who's been playing and teaching guitar for over 20 years, and is fluent in everything from finger style Classical/Flamenco and Folk guitar, to Jazz, all Rock(from classic to modern Alternative/Indie), and various World music styles.

Starting guitar lessons at a very young age; Bill went on to win many regional, national, and international awards through out his formative years as a student. Writing and recording in several different styles over the years; and also being a vocalist and songwriter; he founded Indie Fusion trio The Static Dia
l in 2010 as it's leader. The band has worked with several national and international touring bands, has been featured on indie and major radio from their hometown in Detroit to the UK, and has released two EPs, two singles, and a full length album.
Feel free to message with any questions about potential lessons; we'd love to hear from you!.

*** Lesson Details ***
As an instructor, I start students with the basics (open chords, major/minor and blues scales, general rhythm/timing, and beginner technique), and like to get at least a basic ability to sight read (music notation).

For younger students, I get them started on a beginner book for sight reading music and simple/basic songs to start with and build up their ability.

If a student is a little more capable, we start on a more modern/popular song they like. For my more advanced students, we get into music theory (cycle of fifths, harmony, chord language, etc.) and with some students we study specific genres.

My approach is one of building up a student's self confidence, and ultimately making learning fun. I take teaching seriously and value my student's time; so I work to get the most out of them, and to make their lessons worth while. All ages and levels are welcome!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio space in Helen's of Troy. Office is furnished with seating, music stand, and amplifier.
Student must have their own instrument and pick.

*** Specialties ***
I'm a singer/songwriter as well as a guitar player/instructor, so the construction and arranging of a song; from the music to the lyrics; are very much within my experience and teaching.

Bill is an excellent teacher. He uses any type of music you like to help you learn and stay interested. I leave every lesson excited to go home and practice what I’ve learned. Bill allows me to make a short video of what we’ve gone over that lesson which is how I learn the best when I’m back at home. Its like having that weeks lesson at your disposal for you to use at any time. My love for the guitar has grown tremendously thanks to Bill.

I am confident my future guitar lessons with Bill will provide me with solid guitar playing abilities, and will prove to be compelling and diversified.

Everything from basic chords and strums to more complex strumming patterns and fingerpicking. Learn to accompany yourself while singing, or learn how to play chord melodies and intricate melodic arrangements or anything in between!

About Michelle
Get to know me a little better by watching my intro video below, or click on the "Ask Michelle A Question" button right next to my picture!

Hi! My name is Michelle. I’m a professional guitar and banjo player, and music teacher! I teach all levels of classical guitar, acoustic guitar, bluegrass and folk guitar. I also specialize in all levels of clawhammer banjo, but also offer 3-finger Scruggs-style bluegrass banjo lessons. I also teach all styles and levels of ukulele from basic strumming patterns to fingerpicking chord melodies.

I cater my lessons to each individual student. I love teaching all levels, so don’t worry if you’ve never picked up an instrument in your life…there’s no such thing as a hopeless case!! I work on building a strong foundation of form and technique in all of my students regardless of level, whether
you’re just starting out or are a more experienced player with some bad habits to break or looking to add to your musical toolbox!

My formal training is classical, I have a Bachelor’s degree from Oberlin Conservatory and a Master’s degree from Eastman School of Music, both in classical guitar performance. That being said, I’m a little different than most classically trained teachers, in that I have traveled outside of the classical world to the folk traditions of old-time and bluegrass music, and I am very passionate about this music. I also tour regularly with a folk/Americana trio called Harpeth Rising, which combines both classical and folk traditions into original music (but don't worry, it won't interfere much with teaching!)

My teaching style reflects my combination of influences. My style is fluid, and I work with each student’s individual strengths and weaknesses create a learning environment that is comfortable, relaxed, and ultimately very effective. I also expect my students to schedule regular practicing into their daily routines, which is something I also help my students with.

Thanks for visiting my page!

**Availability notice: As I am a touring musician, my availability is flexible. For online lessons, I may need to reschedule times while I'm on tour. For in person lessons, we may need to reschedule missed lesson while I'm on tour. This will happen infrequently, but I thought I'd give fair warning!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide my own instrument, and I expect my students to have an instrument of their own. If you need help purchasing an instrument I have 8 years of experience and knowledge of fretted stringed instruments, so I am happy to help advise you once you purchase lessons!

I am great with kids and have received excellent feedback about my teaching style. I play 5 instruments and teach guitar, ukulele, and bass.

With each lesson you will find a fun and easy to understand way to improve your playing tailored just for you. No internet video can do that.

Simply choose this plan and select the amount of time you would like to work with me. I would suggest messaging me before you schedule, so that I can figure out the best plan for you.

About Michael
Hello future rockstars! Now is the time for you to unlock your potential and take your interest in the guitar to the next level. Whether it is for a future career, a hobby, or just to be able to play a song for your friends, I can develop a personalized plan to get you the results you desire.

I am currently a student at Cal State Fullerton and also a musician with performing and recording experience since the age of 14. My passion for music began ever since I had heard Dazed and Confused by Led Zeppelin on the radio. Since then, I have played in restaurants, weddings, bars and other venues all around Orange County and LA as a lead guitarist, rhythm guitarist, and bassist. The music that I specialize in playing are mostly acoustic, Pop, alternative rock, R&B, and classic rock. I like to song write and record my own music as well and the
refore have acquired a strong attention to detail and solid work ethic to achieve my desired results.

I believe in creating a positive and exciting work environment where we can have you develop at your own pace in a productive way. A great teacher is one that customizes their lesson to fit the student's individual needs while making the lesson educational and fun!

Being that I am one of the younger guitar teachers out there, I am able to better relate to younger students on a more personal level and possess an energetic teaching style and willingness to better myself as a teacher and musician just as much as my student.

Still have some questions before you try a first lesson? I am available to answer your questions! Just message me through this website and I will respond within only a few hours.

When I was growing up, we all learned ukulele in Elementary school - when Uke started making its resurgence these last couple of years, I was quick to jump in and start teaching this super-fun, portable, "easy to get started" instrument! Play songs, accompany yourself singing - be the life of every party!

About Julia
I'm a passionate professional vocalist and a fourth generation music educator. With 20+ years of professional performing, coaching and teaching experience under my belt, my vocal teaching method unites my classical and musical theatre educational background with the techniques I have developed for singing Jazz, Rock, R&B, Country, etc believably, beautifully, and above all, safely!

In expanding my teaching practice to include piano and ukulele, I emphasize rhythm and musicality alongside technique and note reading. I always set myself the goal of learning what makes a musician sound "right," and not just "good" in a particular genre. This versatility has made me extremely employable as an artist, and, I think, uniquely qualified to teach. I believe that students will work harder on music that moves them, and I always encourage students
to suggest songs that they care about. Good technique(s) can be applied to any repertoire!

Brooklyn-based private music teacher operating in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Over a decade of experience teaching a broad range of styles to students of all ages and backgrounds. Strong focus on the individual student's personal interests and goals. Master's degree in music with years of experience touring globally and recording for both major and indie labels.
Whether you're looking to begin your or your child's ukulele learning experience, or take your playing to the next level, it's my passion to get students playing the music they want to play, right from the beginning!

About Ken
A recent transplant to the Park Slope area, I'm a composer and multi-instrumentalist originally from Raleigh, North Carolina. Prior to receiving my master's degree in composition from Mannes (The New School), I was the lead guitarist in the indie rock band Annuals. As part of this group I signed with two major record labels, appeared on national television programs such as Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and performed globally both on tour and at prominent festivals such as Bonnaroo, Coachella, Glastonbury (England), and Roskilde (Denmark).

I have been teaching private music lessons for twelve years, both freelance and as part of various organizations. My approach to teaching is highly dynamic—I don't use the same method with every student and I have no stylistic prejudices or an agenda to push. I approach each student as an individual
, tailoring lesson plans to suit their personal goals and interests. I have experience playing and teaching an extensive range of styles including pop, rock, jazz, country, metal, and classical. One of my main goals is to foster a sense of musical understanding with every student so that they may learn to combine technical, theoretical, and aural skills into a unified whole.

Most students want to learn to play songs they know and love. To that end, I get students playing the music they want to play right from the beginning, often through personally crafted arrangements of songs/pieces of the student's choosing, specifically tailored to their current skill level. This way, technical and theoretical skills are learned through direct experience with actual music, and only very rarely through rote exercise.

For more advanced players, I offer an array of strategies designed to take your playing to the next level. I find that the most common shortcomings of advanced players are conceptual. The technical skills are there but the level of conceptual and theoretical understanding has hit a wall. Many players find themselves playing the same chord shapes, melodic patterns, and harmonic progressions over and over again. I've had much success over the years in getting advanced students out of this rut and helping open up new pathways for exploration in both improvisation and composition.

I've been playing off and on for 15 years and am mostly self taught. I knew what I wanted to learn but was having trouble figuring it out on my own. In the first lesson Ken was able to zero in on what I want to learn and the best way to go about it. In three lessons I feel that I understand the guitar so much more than I have in the past 15 years of playing. Not only from a technical standpoint, but also in a "feel" sense. On my own I could learn all the scales, chords, and songs I wanted, but Ken has helped me to make sense of everything and use these skills to become a better player all around.

Jonathan taught me when I was around middle school age and has left a lasting impression on how I approach the bass and music 10-ish years later. Under his tutelage I learned music theory, techniques, and all sorts of different genres and styles.

His lessons were always very professional. I always felt challenged, but not overwhelmed, by the material being taught. He also made it easy to be interested in the lessons; he would always ask if there's any song or genre that I wanted to learn and that sort of thing.

Overall, definitely a 5/5 top shelf educator and musician.

"Showing the world there are more songs to play on the uke besides Somewhere Over the Rainbow, I'm Yours, & Riptide."

I have played ukulele for 9 years and spent 3 years in college singing & playing on State Street in Santa Barbara. My teaching style focuses on using tab notation. I think it allows players to be more creative in altering chords & progressions, instead of defaulting to basic ones like "G, D, Am, C."

I still start with basics (depending on experience level) but eventually I move on to unique chords, strumming/percussive patterns, & embellishments that turn the ukulele from a "toy" into a powerful instrument.

About Nico
UC Santa Barbara Grad.

I am a singer that took on the ukulele 8 years ago. Over the past 3 years I have played throughout Santa Barbara performing local gigs & busking on State Street.

Ukulele Lessons:
I like to challenge the preconception that the ukulele is a "toy" and expose people to what can be achieved on a small, 4-stringed instrument. I am constantly thinking of new ways to add life to the instrument and show how capable the ukulele truly is.

Vocal Lessons:
My goal is to make all of my students reach the point where they are comfortable with their own voice. My teaching draws from my experience in formal concert/chamber choirs, musical theatre, collegiate a cappella, and solo performances.

In addition to teaching, I create videos as an outlet for performing and sharing my true enjoyment for music.
