About Carla
I have been signing since 1998, spending every chance I can among my Deaf friends and immersing myself in the language as often as possible. I received my BA in Music with a certification to teach at Lubbock Christian University in 1998. Later I attended the Interpreter Certification program at Burlington County College in New Jersey from 2009-2011, and during that time took a summer course at Gallaudet University for the Deaf in Washington DC. Then in 2014 I received my MEd in Curriculum and Instruction with Instructional Technology from Houston Baptist University. I have been teaching ASL at the high school level since 2011. I am also one of the interpreters for the Deaf at my church in Fort Bend County, TX, outside of Houston, where I am a member and actively involved in the Deaf Ministry.

Please feel free to ask me any questions y
ou have. I'm happy to get back with you, and I look forward to teaching you!

Working with Carla has been incredible! I had a minimal amount of ASL experience before starting lessons and Carla has helped me learn so much in such a short amount of time. She's wonderful at helping you to incorporate what she's teaching into conversations so you can practice using and understanding signs.

I was able to use my short 4 weeks of private lessons on a recent trip where I was able to have a lovely conversation with a member of the deaf community - thanks to Carla.

I look forward to continuing on and developing a much deeper understanding of ASL!

About Jiawan
Hi there! This is Jiawan, and I'm here to help you achieve your goal.

A little about me. I was born and raised in Beijing, both my parents are professors. I went to Japan for high school, after that, England. I spent almost five years there, got my Bachelor's and Master's degree. After severn years of living oversea, I went back home in 2010 and worked in a film/animation company for several years. In 2014, I came to the States, finished another Master program at University of Miami. After graduated from UM, I moved to Michigan to live with my boyfriend. Last summer, we just got married. Right now, I’m working as s freelancer for a LA based indie film company. In my spare time, I also write my own stories and scripts.

A little about my Chinese lesson. I started to teach Chinese (both simplified and traditional) as a part-time job si
nce 2007, so I'm pretty confident on it. Student of all ages and levels are welcomed. One thing I would like to point out is unless you have required textbook, I tend not to use any existing learning materials as they always turn out rather boring and disappointing and so out of date. The first session will just be we get to know each other and discuss your goal (and it will be free), then I will design each session and make materials by myself.

A little about my Math lesson. I don't believe that Asian people are better at Math, but I do agree that we have some unique ways to master basic Math, which may make Math easier for grade school student.

A little about my writing lesson. As an international student, I graduated from my bachelor's program with a GPA 3.5, my first master's program with a GPA 3.8, and my second master's program with a GPA 4.0. Academic writing can be tricky, especially for those international students who do not have any experience before. I will show you the rules of academic writing, and you will find out that you don't need a perfect English to get an A for your essay.

A little about my college admissions lesson. To apply for a program is to make yourself different from other candidates and suitable for the program. I did my undergraduate and postgraduate application all by myself, and got accepted by my first choice school. With a little bit luck, let's knock your dream school's door open together.

A little about my IELTS prep class. IELTS is a language level test for non-native English speakers, so to get a higher score, a good foundation is necessary. Also, you need test taking skills and proper trainings to master it. That is why I'm here to help.

Thanks for reading this. If there's anything I could help, please don't hesitate to contact me. Have a nice day!

I still have several lessons to go with Jiawan, but she has done an amazing job so far with preparing materials, helping me with pronunciation and tones, and teaching me to write traditional Mandarin characters. As of the time I'm writing this review I still have a fairly shaky grasp on spoken Mandarin, however, I can also definitely tell that I've improved considerably from where I was prior to beginning our lessons. Picking out words and phrases while watching Taiwanese/Chinese dramas has also become a lot easier for me.

I definitely recommend taking lessons with Jiawan. She is friendly, professional, and I look forward to our weekly meetings since she has helped to make learning Mandarin a fun process for me. Two thumbs up!

Marina was my direct supervisor while I was a graduate assistant for the International Students and Scholars Office at Iowa State University, and she is one of the best supervisors I've ever had. Marina assigns you tasks and then let's you work on them without being micromanaged. She trusts you to complete the work she gives you, and she is very open with her communication, always having an open door policy, where you are free to voice your opinions and ideas. It was enjoyable having a supervisor who saw me as more like a colleague instead of a subordinate. I always knew I could come to her and my ideas would be taken seriously. I worked with Marina to revamp the curriculum for an orientation course for international students, where it was a pleasure learning from her in-depth pedagogical knowledge. Additionally, I worked with Marina in the classroom where she challenges her students because she knows what they are capable of achieving. Like her open door policy in work, she allows her students to come to her whenever they need assistance and she is always more than willing to work with students on questions they may have or in areas they need additional assistance. She is an extremely fair educator and sets high standards for her students, but scaffolds the learning to ensure every student, with the right work ethic, can reach their desired goals.

Marina has a wonderful rapport with the people of all ages, especially college students. Her greatest asset is her creativity, as she always made sure to engage me in the learning process in unique ways. Every lesson was fun and helped me to learn new material easily. Marina has a truly unique ability to connect with students from the first lesson. She had been very patient in dealing with my learning difficulties, and always answered questions professionally. While studying with Marina, I learnt that she is a team player who is always willing to address my needs. She is very detail oriented and can aptly manage overseeing individual performance. She is extremely organized , reliable and flexible to work with.

Marina is a highly dedicated, result-oriented language instructor who invests the best of her time and energy into finding an individualized approach to every student. In particular, she is very flexible and carefully considers each student’s language learning needs while developing her lessons and activities. As a result, her lessons and language materials are creative, interactive, very well designed, and are tailored to different students’ language levels and needs. Additionally, she carefully considers each student’s cultural background while developing her materials to ensure her lessons are culture-sensitive, and, at the same time, help students explore and navigate the unique cultural and social characteristics of different English-speaking countries.
On a personal level, Marina is very sociable, relatable, and accommodating. Her high energy, motivation and passion for teaching help students feel comfortable and eager to learn during her lessons. Being a bilingual herself, she is well aware of what difficulties language learners face and, leading by example, she helps students overcome those fears and view language learning as an exciting journey rather than a challenge.
