I have been performing drums for over 20 years and I have 15 years experience teaching students of all ages and backgrounds. Within the first few lessons your will be able to play basic songs and take fills and in short time you will be able to play syncopated grooves from all genres of music, make up your own grooves and fills and play essential rudiments. I have written two instructional books which I use along with other classic drum education material like Ted Reed's "Syncopation" and "Advanced Funk Studies" and "Stick Control". I love helping new students discover their talents and I can't wait to meet you!

About Chresten

I have been a performing musician for almost 20 years and teaching for over 10 years. I consider myself a multi-instrumentalist, my first instruments were the drumset and piano and I began studying guitar in my teens. My love of music has led me to study a wide range of subjects, but my primar

I'm not currently taking beginner drum students. Please refer to my studio partner Melissa:
https://takelessons.com/profile/melissa-m62

Intermediate
Start to learn about polyrhythms as well as developing your ears and body to play songs more accurately. Start to spice up your playing with ways that are interesting, but not intrusive.

Advanced
Really push your polyrhythms and add asymmetrical meters to your repertoire to expand your grasp of complex rhythms. Also learn to use dynamics, cymbal work, and fills to effectively communicate and lead a band without words.

About Jesse

*Disclaimer* I'm currently not taking beginner students for bass, drums, piano, and ukulele or children under 10 years old. I highly recommend my studio partner Melissa though. Please check out her profile: https://takelessons.com/profile/melissa-m62 My Background I've been playing with

Talented teachers are rare. Like a great coach i sports... the coach doesn’t need to be the top athlete in his field to know how to teach each team member to hone their best abilities, he just has to know and see how to teach you how to get there. Being an outstanding teacher is a great talent all in itself... and that is Jesse. He has that quality and ability to lead, focus and take you where you want to go.

Jesse has given directions on how to successfully become a better musician. His approach and explanation on musical theories was much more understandable than what I was previously reading. Overall, I found the lessons to be very usefull.

Hello potential students! I have been teaching music for over eight years, and love teaching as much as music itself. I've been teaching contemporary drum set in Orange County for over a decade, and many of my students have gone on to not only play and read notated drum set music with ease, but have continued their studies at arts high-schools and music colleges, with several of them continuing on to the professional world. I use an award winning curriculum used at many music academies and conservatories, and have received accolades for my ability to retain many students for many years. Within the first few lessons, a new student will be able to understand the basics of rhythm and snare drum notation, play a plethora of relatable and cool sounding grooves, and build a foundation that will serve the student for a life time.

Bottom line: I enthusiastically recommend Mike for virtual drum lessons…esp. if you’re not convinced that virtual music lessons are effective /worth it – Mike’s style is perfect for online lessons.

Details

About me: adult student, drummed throughout high school (band and private instruction for a few years), but was always more interested in the kit than taking the time to really learn rudiments and develop my hands. Now, with limited space in my home and the pandemic making everything virtual, I thought it was a good time get back into it and give virtual music lessons a shot. I wanted to find a teacher comfortable with focusing on / teaching this discipline. After some research, I found Mike, whom I took ~ 20 lessons with. Though I was initially a bit skeptical of online music lessons (had taken in-person lessons as a kid, before online lessons were even possible), I quickly realized that learning and development was not only possible, but probable with Mike as my teacher (and my willingness to practice regularly).

Mike’s professionalism shows in multiple ways, including his drumming proficiency (of course) and knowledge, overall instruction and communication style, punctuality, and the professional setup / studio that he works out of. He also has a great attitude toward his students’ progression, and an impressive knowledge of drum education (especially), professional drummers, and music and recordings. We had a lot of very enjoyable and insightful conversations re: the techniques of different drummers. I realize that is something that may be harder with younger students, but it’s a nice bonus when you can (if you want) have an actual conversation with your instructor (vs. one way instructional-based communication). He also gave me a ton of recommendations for music and/or instructional resources to check out (which is important for musical growth). I was also able to “bounce” a number of equipment / brand related questions off of him.

Re: the actual instruction - over the course of several months, we reviewed a number of sticking / rudiment exercises that definitely helped to develop my hands, esp. my double stroke roll. To introduce these exercises, he shared them on his screen and reviewed them (including playing them). He’d then email them. He also gave me a rudimentary-based piece to work toward. That was cool because it brought all the lessons together.

To summarize, I learned quite a few things and definitely developed my hands (and can play some things now that I couldn’t play in high school). I had to stop b/c of some major schedule changes that are significantly restricting my free time, but I definitely plan on resuming once my schedule returns to normal.

Like anything, you’ll get the greatest reward (and value for your money) if you take the lessons seriously and practice regularly.
Justin
I have so enjoyed my lessons with Michael. My primary application for drums as been in a church worship environment. He's been able to customize my lessons to best meet my needs for that venue. He's worked with me on specific skills that have brought significant improvement.
His knowledge and skills continue to stretch me to become a better drummer. It's been a joy to work with him.
Highly recommend!

Teaching students how to play with bands and read music are both important. I've played over 30 years and taught over 20 of those years. Grooves, coordination, reading and soloing are all aspects of what I teach from mostly my own books. I combine having fun with the commitment of practicing into a well rounded learning experience. I have recitals for students to show off their talents 1-2 times yearly. I'm versatile in teaching new drummers or advanced students. I look forward to our lessons.

About Danny

I've played drums about 30 years and taught lessons about 20 of those years. Each student is different and I've evolved my lessons to accommodate teaching each student. Our son, Jonah, has been taking lessons with Mike for a little over 18 months. It was one of the best decisions we ever made for him. Mike established rapport with Jonah very quickly. Play-Along Strategies for Drum Techniques

Playing along with songs can be an effective learning technique, especially for drummers.  With the background music in place, you can then practice different drumming styles, as well as practice staying in tempo, if that's something you're struggling with.  Here is a recommendation from Jeff F., one of our Chicago drum teachers: As a working musician and teacher I have found playing along with recordings to be a valuable learning tool.  Doing this enables you to really get inside …

3 Things to Master Before Learning Jazz Drumming

Imagine you're traveling to a foreign country, and you decide to learn the language.  You would probably start with simple words or phrases - "Hello, my name is..." or "Where is the subway?". But for those of you who have mastered a second language, think about how much easier it got once you delved a little deeper: grammar rules, formal vs. informal language, even the evolution of the culture and …
