This is great for all students of guitar and music in general. It helps the student understand the mechanics of the instrument; and how music in general works and blends those sounds we love.
I highly recommend at least a basic idea of music theory for all students.

Bill is a great teacher. He is able to teach whatever songs or style of music you are looking for. He is extremely helpful and makes the lessons really fun and enjoyable. He is very accommodating and ensures you are understanding what he taught. Overall, I really enjoyed my lessons and I highly recommend him.

Bill is a delight to work with, he is patient and thoughtful. I am very pleased and fortuned to have found him as my teacher.

What a great teacher! He has several decades of experience in playing and teaching and it shows. He plays effortlessly and is very patient. He would be the ideal teacher for someone who is either new or already experienced with the guitar. Also, I feel like he can play most any song (and coming from a 70s/80s rock/metal fan, it's great). If you're on the fence about learning or continuing with lessons, give him a shot. You won't be disappointed!

Private Music Theory Teacher

I have been teaching music lessons both privately in schools and in my home for over ten years.
I take beginners as well as intermediate students.
The students learn the lines and spaces of both Treble and Bass Clefs with me during their regular music lesson. They also learn the note values and the time and key signatures in both clefs. This is done at the same time of their music lesson.
I also use the tool of Music Ace Deluxe for their computer, which the students find a lot of fun, and it is a easy way to remember the theory that they have learned in their lesson. I also teach music theory as a memory skill by use of some games and flash cards. Music Theory is something they they will use for the rest of their lives.

About Kathy

I am a patient, enthusiastic teacher in the following areas: piano, violin, cello, drums, music history, and music theory. I have taught vocal and instrumental music in both Catholic and Public schools, and in after-school programs, for 20 years, and have been giving private lessons for 9 years. I e

A great passionate violin instructor.
Loquacious, but each moment of verbal conversation has a message that leads to the musical lessons of the day. I really appreciate her knowledge and skill. I am often reminiscent of my violin instructor as a child. Each session leaves me with the zeal to practice hard in eager preparation
for the next.

Kathy is a kind, patient and methodical teacher. She develops your piano skills with a structured program of theory and exercises geared toward constant improvement. She has helped me improve my piano technique throughout our time together. I have been able to play increasingly challenging pieces on a regular basis with her. I look forward to steadily improving my piano skills.

I have recently returned from a week long stay at the Sonatina Piano Camp in Bennington VT and would like to notify all those piano students who may read this review as to the wonderful experience attending this camp can be. The camp takes adult piano students at all piano skill levels from beginner to well accomplished. Students stay in shared rooms (2-4 persons) which includes a piano in every room. Attendance is usually 18- 27 persons. The mansion itself is home to approx. 30 pianos. All meals are provided (and are outstanding) as well as piano classes and 4 lessons with concert pianists or university piano professors. Ample time is provided to practice a performance piece for the end of week performance night. Master classes are given on several evenings for those wishing to perform a work in progress piece for the attendees and the camp owner providing a public lesson.
I have found that the attending student group to be extremely supportive to all other students especially to those experiencing performance anxiety. Repeating attendees (from all over the country) have formed lasting friendships among themselves which have endured for years. Eight week long sessions are given throughout the year. In addition there are summer sessions for school aged youth
and also 4 short week sessions for those wishing to try a sampling of the camp. This past January was my 3rd year attending the camp and I will be returning again next year. My experiences at the camp have been truly unforgettable. More information can be obtained at Sonatina.com

I can show how to match musical theory into what a student wants to to play or learn around the same time. This allows him/her to simultaneously understand how theory applies to their learning process and expand the possibilities and understanding whether he/she is a singer or a instrumentalist, or both. Music theory may not be the most desirable subject to learn but by linking it to what they already know it opens many, many doors and this is where the epiphanies and fun begins.

The first lesson was successful. My particular background in piano is unique, and my needs are atypical as well. I thought Thomas assessed my abilities, lack of abilities, and goals well and quickly. He started me on a different perspective on looking at music (reading the staff) that seems very helpful. I'm encouraged.

I plan my lessons and create my own materials to fit each student's specific needs and goals. While learning an instrument is a worthy endeavor on its own, I also work with my students to hone important life and study skills that they can also apply to other aspects of their lives and education - not to mention having fun making music! Confidence, problem solving, and setting and working towards goals are just some of the skills I work to impart on my students.

"By far the best teacher I have ever had. Paul makes lessons engaging, and his wealth of knowledge never comes off as elitist. He explains complicated theory in a practical way for anyone to understand. If I wasn't leaving Chicago I would have signed up for ten more lessons. "It has been a few years since our daughter, Michaela, took piano and music theory classes from Howard Richman. However, hardly a day goes by when she is not using something that she has learned from him. Whether she is writing a song, composing music, producing a track, playing the piano, singing, rehearsing, performing, etc…it always involves some aspect of her lessons with Howard. She is always referencing material from her classes with him. The enjoyment and confidence that Howard instills in his students, through his methods of teaching, truly must last a lifetime. Going to Howard was one of the best decisions that we have made regarding Michaela's career. In fact, as it turns out, it was a life changing experience for her. Needless to say, we have the very highest recommendation for Howard Richman."
