Have you ever wanted to play fiddle, but never knew where to start? Do you have trouble learning correct technique, practice strategies, or struggle finding good repertoire to learn? Well, you've come to the right place!

In our first lesson, I will likely ask you to demonstrate your level to me, either by telling me or showing me what you know. I will use this to better understand your strengths and weaknesses and go from there. You can expect to come away from our first lesson with some learning materials, a plan for going forward, and an encouraging start to our journey as musicians together!

Some examples of things students can learn from me include: expanding repertoire, ear training, music reading, improvising, jamming, music theory, and technique.

About Alani

I am a multi-instrumentalist with a passion for bluegrass and old time music. I love to perform and have had the opportunity to share the stage with many of my hero's. Over my years of learning and playing this music, I have been taught and mentored by many amazing musicians, which has inspired m

Alani is an awesome fiddle teacher who gave me the personal attention needed for a beginner. As an adult student, she was quickly able to assess my strengths, weaknesses and learning style. She made me feel at ease and had lots of patience. I would highly recommend Alani to anyone looking to learn the fiddle. Can’t wait for my next lesson!

I saw a post on Facebook by Alani that she was giving fiddles lessons. It had been a while since I picked up the fiddle and thought that this was the best way to get back to playing. I messaged her and we set up a date and time for the lesson. The lesson was amazing, we were both a little nervous but it didn’t stop us from playing some awesome music. Alani was really patient with me as I hadn’t tuned or played my fiddle in a good while. After the lesson, Alani sent me audio files of the music we played so that I could listen back and continue learning. Overall a great lesson, and I hope to take another soon!!

Alani has been wonderful. She was so flexible and understanding when I had to cancel due to family reasons at the last minute. She has taught me several types of tunes and songs and listens and lets me take the lead in what I would like to learn and answers all my questions. She even simplified one of my favorite songs by Nickel Creek that was way too complex for me to try to play as a beginner but now I can play it and work up to the more complex version if I'd like. She is good at helping me find answers to many of my questions myself and guides me so that I can figures things out on my own. She is a great teacher for an independent person and can give a great foundation for a student to build from and know how to teach themselves. (Like the teacher who teaches one to fish rather than just giving the student the fish)

I am a fiddler and vocalist for internationally-touring and award-winning folk groups, Tullamore and Brackish Water Jamboree. In addition to my performance schedule, I am also honored to play first violin for the Hampton Roads Philharmonic. I run a thriving online teaching studio, which has been kicking since 2003, after earning my degree in violin performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Students describe me as patient, fun, and encouraging! As your teacher, you can expect me to work with you from where you are, and with subjects and curriculum that match what you are interested in learning. I teach traditional classical, using either Suzuki or Essential Elements, depending on your learning and self-motivational needs, and I also teach fiddle music, including Celtic, old-time, bluegrass, and alternative styles. *Please check my availability before signing up, as my time slots are quickly filling up!* I look forward to meeting you! My two daughters, 13 and 16, have been taking lessons from Rachel for about a year now. They were beginning and intermediate levels. Both of them have enjoyed working with Rachel. She has kept lessons fun and engaging and we have seen a lot of progress. My daughters love celtic fiddle songs and Rachel has helped them play more on pitch and taught them some neat techniques. Rachel has also been very patient with our scheduling changes and is a great communicator.

Rachel is a terrific and inspiring fiddle teacher. Lessons were focused on achieving my goals (which I did) but lots of fun too. Rachel is great at suggesting a number of approaches to improving your skills and also suggested some great new fiddle tunes! I highly recommend Rachel for fiddle lessons.

I'm sorry, I cannot handle this Instructor for my children. She wasn't me but she's not quite the people person I expected. Her personality is not a good match for a high school tutor. Unfortunately her English is not good enough. Her accent is entirely too strong. Also she does not know enough Geometry to help my kids.

My first lesson with Zach was great! 5 stars. He asked the right questions as to what aI am looking to do. And we quickly came up with a lesson plan that with the right amount of work in my part will get me headed in the right direction. Zach does a great job of making his students feel comfortable and good about their abilities.

"Laura is a natural teacher- she is able to identify strengths and needs and come up with steps to improve weak areas and also ideas on how to build on the strengths. What I value most about the lessons that I take with her is that she seems undaunted by my inability to grasp something and just comes up with another approach to help me. She is flexible and a master of many styles of fiddle playing. She can work with anyone from beginning to accomplished; child to senior citizen. I look forward to each lesson."

What's the Difference Between the Violin and Fiddle?

Is that a fiddle... or a violin? It's a common question, and one that baffles many beginner musicians. So what's the answer? When it comes to the actual instrument, there actually aren't any differences. What distinguishes a violin from a fiddle is what kind of music you're playing with it. A musician playing folk, bluegrass or country, for example, would most likely refer to their instrument as a fiddle; those who play other genres (jazz, classical, etc.) typically call theirs a violin. …
