A holistic and relevant approach to teaching piano and music skills to anyone.

Holistic Approach

The phrase “Holistic Approach” simply means that I teach the student, not the lesson. Every student has a different learning style, goal, strengths and weaknesses. It means I will teach all the elements of music in context of the big picture, not just learn the written language of music. It means I will think outside the box and customize the learning journey to help each student reach their own potential.

My goal is to facilitate students’ own exploration of the piano and its language so that they can learn to play anything independently. It’s a matter of “learning how to learn,” and making connections between all of the knowledge they gain. That comes through a functional, relevant introduction to music, as opposed to going through the motions of a method book alone, to memorize numerous isolated facts and repeat them indefinitely.

I am still not a perfect player and ...

I am a classical concert pianist so I primarily teach classical piano to students of all ages, but I can also teach some pop music for the piano if the student wishes. I give much importance to teaching proper piano technique (hand posture, finger work etc.) so the piano playing will become an enjoyable experience for the student.

Our piano lessons for beginners start off with orientating yourself properly with the keyboard. The C position is the most common position for playing simple melodies, and is the groundwork for any new piano beginner. In your first piano lesson, you will learn the beginners version of Beethoven's classic, "Ode to Joy", based on the C position.

In this second piano lesson for beginners, you will master the C position from your right hand. Timeless classics such as "Jingle Bells" are learned to help solidify your knowledge as a beginner.

As soon as you can play basic melodies with your right hand you are ready to focus on your left hand. There is also a C position for the left hand that starts one octave below the middle C, and in this third piano lesson for beginners, you will learn this along with Elvis Presley's hit single "Love Me Tender".

Next you will learn the names of keys and the basics of musical notation in this piano lesson. Reading sheet music is the foundation to ...

I am an experienced teacher of 16 years! I thrive on finding each student's specific learning style and cultivating a positive and productive learning experience within that. I apply consistent and focused energy in getting my students to strive for their best, and I aim to inspire them to respond in turn with the same focused and accurate effort.

I teach using a modified Suzuki method. This means that, while I do subscribe to Suzuki's "mother tongue" approach, I also believe that education on an instrument requires literacy from a young age. I have discovered in my years of teaching that an early ability to read notes and understand musical theory and form is not a handicap to a student's development, but rather a benefit to the student gaining a richer, fuller understanding of their instrument and music in general.

I believe that every person can be taught, that parental involvement is crucial in the development of musicians from a young age through the high school years, and ...

"Working with Teresa has been an absolute pleasure that I know will pay off in the long term. Thanks to her, my life and my home has been filled with music that I love to play and share with others. It is rare to find a teacher willing to listen to what the student desires to learn and then take the right steps for them to achieve their musical goals. The best thing I can say about Teresa is her ability to not only teach children but adults like myself, in a manner where based upon one's age and learning ability, they are able to become successful."

"Laura's been absolutely great with our children (now 10 and 11). She tailors her teaching style to each one, interacting with them at their level, engaging them, and pushing their music forward -- both their practical skills and their understanding of music itself -- in a manner that seems fun and personal. One of my children just asked what I was doing, and when told and asked if he had anything to say about Laura he replied:
"She is very nice and she is funny and she is a very good teacher""
