About Calvin
As a classically trained violist with orchestral, chamber, and solo performance experience, my teaching style is geared towards performance and expression. I don't adhere to any one book of teaching, adjusting my teaching to the unique needs of each student. My teachers came from different pedagogical backgrounds; as a result, I have a wide array of teaching tools available to pass on to my students. I have taught with El Sistema Colorado, the Longy School of Music's El Sistema program, and had a Teaching Artist residence with Cambridge Public Schools. Currently pursuing my DMA in Viola Performance from the University of South Carolina, I hold a BM in Viola performance from the Lamont School of Music and a MM in Viola Performance from the Longy School of Music.

I have played viola since I first began my musical studies at age 9. As a r
esult, I have seen teachers hold viola students back, simply because they play the "lesser" instrument in the viola family. I do not hold my students back and I hold them all to the same high level of playing, regardless of which instrument they play.

About April
I have picked up and loved the flute for 16 years, and I wish to share this passion and creativity with students. I have had the opportunity to study under Emily McKay and Marco Granados, as well as perform in masterclasses with Trevor Wye, William Bennett, and Lorna Mcghee. As a recent Denver citizen, I wish to grow my roots as a teacher who fosters flute playing as a fun and outside-the-box activity.
I have started teaching private lessons since high school, and into my college and graduate school years. I have taken classes on pedagogy and teaching artistry in creative ways, such as teaching students to do improvisations and asking questions in order to get them engaged in the learning process. I have played classical, jazz, pop, and latin music, and can teach an array of different genres. I believe music contributes to a well-ro
unded individual, and will gladly accept students of all experiences and ages. My goal will to always keep the student engaged and having fun! It is important to play from the heart, and think of music as the spirit of sharing and collaboration.

About Hannah
Hello! I look forward to meeting you and your child! I'd love to do introductions in person, but let me tell you a few things about me:

I am a Michigan-born twenty-something who recently got married. Before moving to Kentwood to live with my husband, I taught piano at Marshall Music in Kalamazoo and was an Administrative Assistant at a local church for about 4 years. Before that I received my Bachelors in Business Administration and a Minor in Music at Indiana Wesleyan University. I was homeschooled all the way from Kindergarten to 12th grade and graduated with my other homeschool friends.

I took piano lessons for about 20 years and learned a several things from my amazingly talented teachers. Here are a few: one, develop a relationship with your student by having conversations about everyday life, two, have a great structured rew
ard system for students who practice, and three, ALWAYS have fun.

There are a few things on the side that I like to do or have done in the past (this information might be useful to tell your son or daughter). I was a very busy homeschool student. Sports were very important to me growing up, I did softball, volleyball and soccer. I also was highly involved in performing arts. I currently enjoy doing crafts like sewing, card making, refinishing furniture, and cooking/baking. I am also a pet lover!

I can't wait to learn more about you at our first lesson.

Excelente teacher who taught my son four years. He did not know anything when he got started and Hannah taught him to play the piano and to love music. He is loving it so much that now he plays the piano an also trombone in band too, thanks to Hannah. She is such a great teacher that I ended up taking clases too and I am loving it. She makes it really fun.

Hannah is a very sweet and patient young lady. I took piano lessons from her a few years ago. I didn't know how to read music and had never played before. At age 60 it was one of the things I wanted to accomplish on my bucket list. She helped me achieve that.
I highly recommend her for anyone. Young or old!

About Zach
Hello! I'm a full-time private music teacher, and anyone who knows me knows that teaching music is my passion in life! Although I work with students of any age, I'm sort of a specialist in giving young beginners (ages 4+) a fun, easy, happy and successful start on violin, viola, cello, guitar and piano! This year I launched a set of virtual music courses for the Hamilton and Niles school districts here in West Michigan, and I like to use these courses with my private students to supplement their learning and practice between lessons. Please reach out with any questions you might have and I’ll get back to you right away! Thank you! ♬

About Joel
I have been playing the drums for nearly 20 years, in which most of my experience is hands-on, playing in contemporary church worship teams and regional Christian rock bands with occasional teaching mixed in. Personally, my favorite style of music to play is rock/alternative but I also favor acoustic/folk styles, funky grooves, Latino rhythms, and the occasional metal, blues, or jazz beats.

No matter the musical style, playing with confidence, feeling the song, and having an awareness of other musicians can escalate you from a "good" drummer to a "great!" one; and this is what I teach my students. They will learn the fundamentals of stick position, rotary movements, basic drum hits and musical notation, as well as how to play on beat (with a "click"). These skills will enable the student to learn any style of music and increase their abi
lity to play the role of the drummer in virtually any band or musical group.

For example, the bands I have played in over the years have opened for multiple National acts like Red, Disciple, Project 86, and Decyfer Down and have played festivals and tours like Cornerstone Festival, Unity Festival, and Winter Jam, opening for Mercy Me, Jars of Clay, and Hawk Nelson. I truly believe that if you know your craft and have confidence in yourself, the sky is the limit for what you can do.

Currently, I play regularly at my local church and do worship nights and events in my area. I would be honored and pleased to work with you and help you become a great drummer!

I love to inspire students to practice, that is where the real magic happens. I love to see them not only set goals for themselves but reach them. I am willing to do whatever it takes to see them succeed. I love working with people and encouraging them. I have been a horn player since August 2007. I am studying french horn at Grand Valley State University but am also efficient in euphonium, piano, music theory, aural (reading rhythms and reciting them aloud), and trumpet. I have been in marching band for 6 years on mellophone so I can also help with teaching marching techniques and mellophone playing since it is very different from french horn.

About David
My teaching style comes from listening to the direction you want to take music in your life. I learn what your goals are, and I create an individualized lesson plan that involves the desires of the apprentice musician while also including the necessary skills for growing from where you are.

More important than the advanced techniques I can teach in specific genres, I will bring foundational concepts and imperative insight when listening to any song for a play-a-long. I can show you how to break down musical components and hear parts, pick out the notes, and learn everything you need to bring the music you love to life. My goal with each lesson is to leave a student feeling empowered and inspired with the right things at the right times. Music is a journey, and that's an experience that can't be rushed.

I can relate to a lot of pro
blems that you might be having. I’ve been there before, and can help you through each challenge you face. My students will be heard, and focus will be brought to the root cause of the things you want to improve. Then we will work together to form solutions.

Through these opportunities to make playing fun, I will show you how easy it is to practice the songs you want to play so that they come out sounding how they really should. It will suddenly become easy to fill the gaps in every half-right tab and find the chords by ear as you listen and play along.

You will find elements of the bigger picture coming together in ways you may not have expected. Since music is constantly expanding our own limitations, there is always more we can achieve with it! The path from listener to musician to artist becomes walk-able at your own pace.

After I began to play the cello in 2000, I auditioned for the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra in 2004. From 2004-2005, I was selected to play in one of BYSO’s ensembles under the direction of Bonnie Black. In the Spring of 2005, this orchestra was also invited to play at Symphony Hall in Boston, MA. During the 2005-2006 season, I then attended the New England Conservatory’s Youth Preparatory Program playing under conductor Adam Grossman. Throughout the next two years (2006-2008), I also played at the New England Conservatory with the Youth Repertory Orchestra, led by Jane Ezbicki. Playing with these orchestras, I also performed all of the New England Conservatory concerts in NEC’s Jordan Hall in Boston, MA.

Throughout my time of performing, I have participated in many orchestras, small ensembles, and solo performances being selecte
d as a principal cellist, assistant principal cellist, and solo artist for local and statewide concerts and events. In addition, I was selected for New Hampshire’s All-State Orchestra for six years in a row, and was also selected for New Hampshire’s Chamber All-State Orchestra. For private instruction, I have studied under Joy Schutze from 2002-2004, Gary Hodges from 2004-2005, and Larry Veal at the University of New Hampshire from 2005-2009.

In May 2012 I graduated from The Master's College in Santa Clarita, CA where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies with an emphasis in Biblical Languages and a minor in Bible. During my time at the college, I played under the direction of Dr. Paul Plew and Dr. Steve Opfer in The Master's College Orchestra, and studied under world-renowned cellist, Janet Shulman. In 2016, I graduated at The Master’s Seminary in Sun Valley, CA with a Master of Divinity.

Today I serve as Associate Pastor of Student Ministries at Highland Hills Baptist Church in Grand Rapids, MI and still love playing and teaching the cello! It would be my great joy and honor to meet you and see you grow in your love for playing the cello, too!
