Hello! My name is Allen and I've been playing guitar for 16 years, and teaching for the past 10. I've been performing and writing since the age of 16 with bands in many styles. I'm originally from Santa Maria, CA, and I obtained my knowledge of music theory, performance, and songwriting skills from taking private lessons in the central coast at a place called Coelho's Academy of Music. Our head instructor, Jerry Coelho, was a student of the late Howard Roberts and was one of the first graduating students to who helped to establish Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), currently known as The Musicians Institute. After dedicating 4 years of private lessons under Jerry and his other top instructors, my hard work payed off and I was given the opportunity take students of my own. For the following two years, I've managed to consistently teach
40 students per week. I decided to move forward and take my musical experience with me to San Diego, where I currently teach, write, record, and perform my music with others who have similar goals and aspirations. I love playing in as many bands as possible. The main one I play in is called Quel Bordel. Some of the bands I've played in have given me the opportunity to perform with local and big named artists such as D.J. Artistic, Gary Wilson of Stones Throw Records, The Aristocrats, Terry Bozzio, Alan Holdsworth, and Tony Levin. As a full time musician and performer, I'm typically out gigging anywhere from 2-5 a week. As a teacher, I'm here to help you with where you want to be with guitar. Whether it's rock, pop, funk, hip hop, reggae, jazz, blues, indie, folk, and country, I can help you with the technical and theoretical side of things.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal- To get you to become better than me. I find myself as an easy going teacher, and can provide that push when I see students getting more engaged in their lessons. I typically teach out of two main books, and it's optional for students to have their own copy of my recommended method books. I emphasize heavy chord vocabulary and steady rhythm. I believe that in order to be a good lead player, you would have to be a great rhythm player. As we develop technique, you can expect me to incorporate theory as to maintain an even share of the HOW's and WHY's. Moreover, expect to DO something with our lessons. Repetition is the mother of learning, and sometimes it comes down to the idea of 'monkey see, monkey do' before we can have in depth conversations about the application of your lessons in real situations. To me, music is very creative. So I'm a big believer on improvisation with both chords and scales. I believe in practical application when learning the songs you want to learn. So every student will have a unique way of learning the fundamentals only necessary to their personal goals.

My daughter is very shy which is why she won't try new things very often. However, after her first lesson with Allen she was excited. She said he made the lesson very fun and made her very comfortable. She learned her first two chords and is eager to practice transitioning between the chords and is looking forward to her next lesson with Allen.

My early professional experiences have included 3 years in the Army Band, several cruise line contracts, and freelance work as a performer and composer. Through these times, I've learned to excel in many styles. I recently graduated from NYU, where I was an adjunct faculty member. Tom was AWESOME! I had a heck of a time finding someone who actually teaches Bugle. I have only had one lesson with Tom however, I am very excited to continue with him. Tom did not rush anything, he didnt watch the clock, he actually wanted to do more playing than talking about this form, music theory etc. etc. I had experienced with other Teachers. Everyone wants to start playing "something" as soon as possible and Tom dove right in to playing or trying to get me to play, HaHa in just the first 20min.

Students need to practice 15 minutes a day. They are required to complete everything that is assigned to them that week, and be prepared for their lessons for the following week. A beginner usually in 3-6 months should be familiar with reading the basic treble and bass clef staff, be familiar with dynamic markings, beginning to understand basic music theory, tempo and minimal sight reading. Voice students study basic vocal technique, and learning to sing properly.

A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy.

Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni, Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole, L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief.

Regardless of your background, I believe in making lessons fun, encouraging, and accessible. This means that my work with you will, by nature, be incredibly personal and always formulated for your specific musical goals. I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.

I believe in whole body, whole spirit singing. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. If these sorts of things interest you, I am more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons. My personal results with those practices have been incredible, so I am always eager to share.

My personality is outgoing and energetic, so I bring that sort of atmosphere to a lesson. I expect preparedness and readiness on your part to maximize our work together. My teaching style is student-centric and organic. I draw from a wide-ranging toolbox of techniques to find the approach that will work for you. Music lessons with me include performance experiences from middle school concerts all the way to performing for 27,000 people as a soloist. As a performer for the past 9 years I have played small town festivals for 50 people all the way tp playing along side people/ entertainers such as The O'Jays, Chaka Kahn, Lisa Lisa and Full Force, The US Army Blues Jazz Ensemble, headlining the biggest jazz festival in Texas for multiple years, and many other performance opportunities. I don't use a systematic approach to students, I use an individual based approach because of three simple facts; All humans are built differently, there are multiple ways to absorb knowledge, and all people learn at a different pace. These facts are a factor of my teaching style and pedagogical approach and is why I approach all students differently. Along with my pedagogy I have an exam of one public performance every 6 weeks. About Altin
Altin Sencalar a Temple, Texas native started his musical education at the age of 9 originally playing the cello. At age 11, he picked up the euphonium, then the trombone and has had the fortune to have studied with some of the finest musicians today. The list includes Michael Dease, Mike Roylance, Andre Hayward, Martin McCain, Freddie Mendoza, Pete Rodriguez, Paul Deemer, Jeff Hellmer, John Mills, and John Fremgan. Along with excellent instructors, Altin has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with performers such as Bobby Shew, Chris Vadala, Marcus Printup, Andre Hayward, Doug Webb, Wycliffe Gordon, Michael Dease, Cyrus Chestnut, Jeff "Tain" Watts, and many others.

On the competition platform, Altin has received prizes and honors for both national and international competitions such as, The American Trombone Workshop, the Internation
al Trombone Association, Texas State Trombone Symposium Michael Rath Jazz Trombone Competition, Downbeat Student Music Awards, and being a Yamaha Young Performing Artist for the Low Brass Division. Along with national and international recognition, Altin remains as one of the most active musicians in Austin, TX and surrounding areas. Recently named one of the top 10 horn players in the 2016/2017 Austin Chronicles, "Austin Music Awards" Altin, had the pleasure of being apart of many original groups in Austin which include Latin Grammy nominated bands, Austin Chronicle Award winning bands, Recording Label artist, and nationally acclaimed groups such as Los Jazz Vatos, Riders against the Storm, Sergio y La Orkesta, La Mona Loca, Memphis Train Revue, The Pictures, Tortilla Factory, Rubeun Ramos and The Mexican Revolution, Big Band Tejano, Tiburon, Vintage 15, JazzBonez, NOW Jazz Orchestra, Tonic Big Band, Kris Kimura's Grande Wasabi Big Band, and many others.
