Ms. S. has a Master's degree in Vocal Performance from Eastern Michigan University and is certified Level III in the Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method. She has also trained in Estill Voice through the University of Michigan, with additional training in the Feldenkrais Method of movement. She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). She will tailor your vocal development to your individual performance goals.

Singing is a complex coordination of breathing, phonation, resonation and articulation, overlaid with musical and performance layers. This process needs to be guided by an instructor who is knowledgeable in the vocal processes and anatomy, as well vocal styles and performance. Vocal development progresses as the body strengthens and growing musical skills demand more from the vocal instrument. We'll work together to create a voice which works freely to express the musical and emotional demands of the literature, allowing the joy of ...

My daughter was trained in opera, and was looking for a teacher who will help her do the transition to musical theater. Well, she has found such teacher.
Ms. Barbara not only has the educational background to help her, but also has a wealth of knowledge thru her personal experience as a musical theatre performer.

In today’s world singers need to know how to perform many styles of music. Many opera singers also sing Broadway and jazz, and all Broadway singers need to sing traditional, jazz, swing, pop, and maybe rock and folk styles. To do this, you need strong physical skills to sing belt, mixed and legit voice. You need strong high, middle and low notes and the ability to sing loud and soft and to modulate from bright to mellow. You need to know your instrument inside and out - how it functions and how to make it work safely, reliably and with good results.

I am unique because of my combined musical and medical backgrounds. In addition to my graduate and undergraduate musical training and extensive musical experience, I was a surgeon and taught anatomy and physiology. Part of my medical training included studying the mechanics of how the body works and its application.
In addition to the traditional methods such as imagery and mimicry that all singing teachers use, I will help

SD Lewis a professional vocal coach with 25+ years of experience as a private voice teacher, audition coach, music director, and piano accompanist. I am based in New York City where I enjoy helping aspiring athletes and artists pursue their Broadway musical dreams.  I specialize in helping professional dancers and musical theatre performers (1) sing a variety of styles (especially pop/rock), (2) build an audition book that represents their brand, (3) prepare sides for callbacks, and (4) develop a storyteller mindset. Although I work primarily with young professionals, I also enjoy serving recreational learners whose musical dreams may simply be to learn a new song, record a song for a family member, sing karaoke with friends, or jam out alone with Spotify, YouTube, or Alexa. For both recreational and professional learners, I hope to instill a love and joy of singing without the pressure of grades, perfection, and judges.

I tailor my lessons to the needs, goals, personality, and ...

About SD

Practical troubleshooting is the main driving force behind my lessons. As a coach, I often meditate on the following questions: (1) How do we make sounds and communicate with speech and song? (2) How do we convert 2D symbols (text) into a 3D body (performer) and create a 4D emotional experi

She can also play the piano so that is extremely helpful to go through different cuts. :)

She is incredibly knowledgeable about different styles and has helped me find many audition songs in my range for various types of shows. As a voice teacher, I seek to develop a level of trust with my students that allows for me to help each student find their most healthy and sustainable vocalism through the attentive pursuit of their most natural voice. We will seek to unleash the power of their own individual voice without any type of unnecessary manipulation, as well as gaining an understanding of the qualities of the singer’s voice that are most natural and make them unique. We will build on these qualities through the comprehensive study of vocal technique and aspects of voice performance.

Through my teaching I seek to inspire and encourage a dedication and a discipline necessary to develop the fine-tuned attention to details that are required to achieve success in the craft. I believe in setting both short and long term attainable goals for growth and development as a musician and artist, and regularly assessing these goals together. We will not only focus on the foundations of vocal technique (breath ...
