I studied Classical Piano under Ruth Jones for 13 years and under Audrejean Heydenburg at Spring Arbor University for 2 years. I studied Voice under Tamara Whitley for 6 years and under Charles Livesay at Spring Arbor University for 2 years.I have been teaching Piano lessons for 10+ years and Voice lessons for nearly as long. I studied piano pedagogy and vocal music education at Spring Arbor University for 2 years. I then taught music at West Highland Christian Academy for K-12 students and Home School Band and Choir for upper elementary students. Along with teaching, I lead worship at West Highland Baptists Church and have accompanied for several community plays and student scholarship events.

*** Lesson Details ***
For vocal lessons, I mostly teach Contemporary, Pop and Broadway as well as worship styles. I incorporate the fundamentals into my everyday teaching style and help the student to grow in their technical ability through application in each song they study. I teach the student how to use their voice correctly as well as how to have good stage presence and performance ready ability.

I teach beginner piano students from age 5 through method books as well as more advanced students in either Classical styles or Contemporary styles. Some students have the desire to be concert pianists or to teach piano themselves, others just wish to play with a band or play songs which they can sing to. Both styles are valuable skills to learn. I will discuss with the student which direction they would like to go and decide together what the student would like to learn.

My home studio has a parking space for one student to come and one to go. Parents are welcome to wait and listen to the lesson or drop the student off. Please contact me about directions after booking as my driveway is a but hard to find the first time you come.

My 13 year old has had two lessons with Lisa so far and We are very happy with her. She seems to really know her stuff and my daughter likes her a lot. We will be continuing with Lisa and I will also be sending my boys to her as soon as we can get a time a lot that will accommodate all 3 of them back to back. I will review again after we have had more time to get to know her but so far so good. :)

Just like a piano, flute or violin, your voice is an instrument.
The purpose of voice lessons is to help you develop a beautiful and dynamic singing voice and also to teach you to use your voice in a healthy age-appropriate way that will keep you singing for many years to come!

About Glenn
I have been active in the entertainment industry since the age of 12, when I gave my first professional performance. Prior to that I was already being introduced to music with years of guitar, and then vocal instruction. I do not remember a time of my life when I was not singing somewhere; in the house, in the yard, in the classroom. That is perhaps why I identify so well with the young people who gather so much enjoyment from "just singing" at every opportunity. I studied professionally for over 10 years with renown soprano and voice teacher Sylvia Jensen, who was instrumental in the enhancement of my vocal knowledge and technique. She is now the Director of Education for the Miss Ohio pageants of the Miss America competitions, elevating many young ladies to the national spotlight. At age 14, I auditioned for, and was added to cast of a
network television variety program, "The Gene Carroll Show", that was a television institution for over 30 years in the Midwest. I was a featured performer on that program for over 7 years, all the while perfecting the art of "playing to a camera." This experience was invaluable, and the knowledge I gathered is now included in my curriculum. I also began performing a solo act in the nightclub circuit at the age of 15, performing up and down the "north coast" from Cleveland, OH, (my home), to Erie. PA. At a very young age, I learned the difficult art of choosing musical material and pacing a show; also adapting to performing under a myriad of conditions with a vast array of musical accompaniment. After graduating college with a degree in Business Administration and Marketing, I assembled my own band, and took to the road. That experience eventually brought the act to Las Vegas in 1982. Over the years my show has been a staple in major casino cabarets in Las Vegas, and all over Nevada. Since my first engagement at The Landmark Hotel in the early 1980's, I have literally been up and down the famed Las Vegas Strip many times over. The Desert Inn, The Dunes, The Stardust, The Maxim, The Tropicana, New York New York, Mandalay Bay, MGM, Bally's, The Flamingo, The Imperial Palace, The Four Queens, The Golden Nugget, The Fremont, The Venetian, The Palazzo, and a three year engagement at The Riviera. My show is truly comprised of musical variety; classics, show tunes, jazz, rock, blues, r&b, country. Even a presentation of "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera, that I perform in full costume. It is this ability to successfully deliver an extensive repertoire that I am enthusiastic about passing along to the next generation of entertainers.

I have been truly blessed in my career to have experienced so many highlights; too many to document. From winning an understudy roll in the Broadway Musical "Platinum" starring Hollywood actress Alexis Smith, to performing our National Anthem at events ranging from Major League Baseball to ESPN Boxing to receptions for major dignitaries, to recording 7 albums and a full-length video, to being asked to perform for Mr. Frank Sinatra at the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Golf Tournament, I have lived a full life on stage, learning and absorbing every bit of knowledge gathered along the way.
Now it is my desire to escalate my status as an educator to a more "one on one" experience; availing myself the opportunity to pass along that wealth of knowledge to individual students who aspire to enjoy the entertainment profession as I have, providing them with the skills needed to successfully compete. Or, should it be their choice not to pursue entertainment as a vocation, to gain a working understanding of all facets of their instrument so as to gain a better appreciation of music. Whatever the goal of the student, I feel that I am equipped to provide them with the tools needed to achieve that goal.

*** Lesson Details ***
Content of Sessions

Generally, the first 10-15 minutes of each lesson will be focused on vocal warm up and exercise. (For guitar students, we will review the previous
week's assignment). For Vocal Students, it is understood that the voice mechanism is made up of muscles, and as an athlete prepares for a sporting event, a singer must prepare to vocalize. It is at this time in our lesson when the student will develop good habits of voice maintenance, which will serve them well throughout their careers. The proper care and preservation of the vocal unit cannot be stressed enough, especially for pubescent and pre-pubescent students. Vocal chords in a developmental stage are most susceptible to damage, and because they are particularly sensitive, they must be handled with care. Our warm up regimen is designed to strengthen as well as preserve the singing voice.

I am not an advocate of getting too involved and "bogged down" in the technical aspects of singing, especially with the young students, and
especially early in our program. This is not to say that breath control, tonality, pitch, etc. are not vital to good singing, because these workings are ESSENTIAL, and their application will certainly be incorporated into our studies. Some instructors, on occasion, have a tendency to lose sight of the fact that much to do with singing happens "naturally", and too much focus on the "technical" can actually be inhibiting. This can alter a beautiful, natural tone into one that is unnatural and contrived.

I adhere to the philosophy that above all else, SINGERS WANT TO SING SONGS, and musicians-in-training want to play music. That is our focus, and all of our training is conceived with that objective in mind. All the technical knowledge and coaching serves no purpose without practical application. It is my belief that the most significant progress occurs when a vocalist is singing a song.

Nearly every element of instruction can be utilized in the performance of one song. This is why the majority of our session time will be spent "in song". For the very young student, we will concentrate our efforts with the students choices of favorite and familiar songs. The older students will undoubtedly have favorite songs, styles and artists. Special attention will be paid to the genre most enjoyed by the student, but diversity will be emphasized as well, and a variety of genres will be unpacked and explored. I believe that whatever a student's musical goals and aspirations, it is in their best interest to gain knowledge and insight in all facets of music, singing, and performance.

The most vital pre-requisite for any student is their enthusiasm. My ambition will be to harness that enthusiasm and channel it productively through stimulating instruction. Our sessions will be informative and educational, but always predicated upon "having fun with music".

I am proud to feature a curriculum that emphasizes the entertainment aspect of singing as well as the technical; created to benefit all ages and experience levels, from beginner to seasoned professional. After just weeks of my "Triple Threat Training" a student will begin to see astounding results: vocally, musically, and in the art of performance. I am excited to share my knowledge with you. Let's get started!

My studio is equipped with a full vocal sound system with microphones that I utilize to teach the valuable art of mic technique. Young students enjoy using the mics and hearing themselves sing and perform. Since our lessons are predicated on enjoying the art of singing, this opportunity has proven invaluable. For the advanced performer, studying all aspects of amplification and what a singer should know about their stage sound is a part of our educational curriculum. My studio is furnished with the equipment that is essential to mastering that knowledge.
Since the practical aspect of my course is based on singing songs, I provide all the latest technology required to allow my students the opportunity to sing the songs of their choosing, with and without the lead vocal tracks. I feel that when students are singing their favorite songs, it offers me the greatest teaching opportunities. I make certain the every musical genre can be represented, and feel I have the knowledge and ability to guide the student is whatever their musical tastes. My studio is also equipped with piano (for vocal exercises), and guitars, which gives me opportunity to accompany my students when the musical moment is appropriate. Glenn is a fantastic instructor. I was a beginner to acting, but I've really wanted to learn more about the craft for a long time. Glenn broke down the fundamentals of reading, character development, and script analysis to help make a more believable performance. Now we're getting into blocking and developing the physical aspects of a character. I'm learning a great deal and Glenn's patience and encouragement make him the ideal instructor to learn and grow. Highly recommend!

I was very pleased with Glenn and the help he gave myself and two other co-workers on the presentation we have to make this week at our conference. I was inspired to start lessons from watching the last season of American Idol. I started with a 12 pack of online lessons. I was so nervous to sing out load (even in the privacy of my home) but Melody was always positive and encouraging. Even though I didn't practice as much as I should, to my surprise I've gotten better at hitting notes. It's helped even at work (female engineer) for me to easily speak louder and lower when needed. I've been taking lessongs for over a year now and it's still challenging but I always feel awesome afterwards (just like a great workout!) When I listen to singers now I have a whole level of of appreciation. It's like Melody introduced a new language. She's an awesome singer herself and I aspire to sing like her!

I have been in musicals from the time I was a child until the end of college. I have been in Annie, Gypsy, just to name a few. I love musicals so much, it is one of my favorite genres of music.

I teach all levels of musical theatre. I use a variety of books that are specifically for each level and each voice.

About Heather
I love teaching, simply love teaching! I teach students of all ages. I teach piano, voice, clarinet, and saxophone. I have taught for over 25 years. My students have lots of opportunities for performance, if they choose to. We perform at Nursing Homes, Retirements, Festival of Trees, and Seasonal Recitals. There are at least 2 recitals a year, 1 at Christmas and 1 in the Spring, if enough participation, we often have one in summer with a party afterward. We also participate in the Michigan Music Association competition. I have also had students perform in Disney World in Florida!!! I have been in many musicals such as Annie, Gypsy, Rock Around the Clock. I have put on solo recitals. I am a member of my church choir. My students and I have fun while we are learning music! It is the best job ever.

*** Lesson Details ***
I
use a variety of curriculum, which includes classical, broadway, some pop, new age, and jazz. After 3 to 6 months you will have a basic understanding of your instrument and will be ready to take off! I do ask students to keep track of your practicing so you can see your progress.

For piano:
I use the Alfred Basic Books for beginners and then we move to the Keith Snell books along with other supplemental books. If a student already is using a book, generally we will finish that book up so they won't have to purchase another set of books.

For Saxophone and Clarinet:
I use the Rubank books along with other supplemental books

For Voice:
I use the 24 Italian Songs and Arias, The Young Singer, and various Broadway books. Any pop music must be purchased by student as there is just way too much to chose from for me to have a lot of it.

Mia is an absolutely outstanding teacher. I came in for my first lesson horrified to sing, not knowing anything about performing. And in just a few months of learning with Mia I was cast in my first show. Fast forward a few more months and I have been accepted to the college of my choice in their Musical Theater program. In just a year she has helped me achieve my goals that seemed so out of this world to me in the beginning but now are a reality. She is not only amazing at the technical stuff, but she is so genuinely invested in helping you be the best that you can be. She changed my life and I'm so grateful to her.

Barbara S. is happy to nest in Ann Arbor, Michigan after many years in New York City and on the road with national tours of "The Phantom of the Opera" (Carlotta and Madame Giry), “Camelot” (Broadway and National Tour) and an international tour of “Evita”. She has appeared locally and regionally with many Equity theaters and opera companies.

Ms. S. has a Master's degree in Vocal Performance from Eastern Michigan University and is certified Level III in the Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method. She has also trained in Estill Voice through the University of Michigan, with additional training in the Feldenkrais Method of movement. She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). She will tailor your vocal development to your individual performance goals.

I am very much enjoying singing lessons with Barbara! She is very energetic and fully engaged in the lessons, and gives great feedback. I am learning quite a lot, and enjoying every minute of it. I would highly recommend Barbara!

Raised on musical theater through my maternal grandfather, vaudeville orchestra leader, Dave Smason, I was first hooked on Broadway musicals seeing the original cast production of the Music Man in NYC at age 3. the great off Broadway opening of"The Fantasticks" at age 7. It was not unusual for my twin brother, mom and me to belt out our 3 part versions of every recorded Broadway tune from Rogers and Hammerstein and Lerner and Lowe to Gershwin, Sondheim, Jule Styne, and Bernstein at any given moment.
Because there were never enough local productions to perform in, (ie; "Annie Get your Gun" , " The fortune teller" , " How to Succeed....," " Gypsy", " The Mikado", " Once upon a Matress",

Due to my maternal grandfather's career as a Chicago vaudeville orchestra leader, from early childhood, the performing arts have been in my blood. Starting to study classical flute at age 12, then playing in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras and taking professional jazz/classical flute workshops/master classes, I've been teaching and playing all styles of flute music professionally since my 20's.

Through many years of teaching experience, I've developed a very successful, uniquely simple 8 part method to help cross cultural individuals/groups of all ages , styles, and levels, sing optimally from their hearts. The necessary basic vocal techniques can be taught effectively in 4 to 8 lessons, though the learning process takes longer and can continue throughout one's lifetime.

With a BA in Theater Arts from SFSU, and over 50 years directing, acting, and musical experience, including the last 15 years also working successfully as an ESL educator, I have gained the confidence to help almost any student achieve their personal and/or professional goals.

Singers and actors of all ages build a stronger resonant voice and learn how to sing right on pitch. Learning how to breathe correctly and lean into the breath also helps you produce a sound that projects. Learning how to use phrasing will also make your singing more beautiful and enjoyable. You will love the sound that you learn how to make when you sing.

Phrasing is one of the most important skills that good singers develop. As you learn how to use phrasing and emotion to tell the story of the song you will gain confidence and ease as you perform. Frank Sinatra was a master of phrasing, so is Renee Fleming, the famous soprano who has sung at opera houses all over the world. Sting has a different style of singing. His voice is smooth a butter as it flows over the words giving them deep meaning. You can learn a lot about singing by
listening to good singers that you like. You will learn a lot from them.

If you would like to raise or lower your speaking voice I can help you learn how to modulate your voice so it will have a pleasant sound in a register that feels right for you.

I also help students with special needs, including adults with Parkinson's helping them develop and maintain the strength of their voice and speak with greater confidence and ease.

Helen B taught me for the past year and a half. She was not only a very good teacher but also very patient. She used different methods if I did not understand the first way. I learned various tricks that would make sure I enunciated properly and could sing louder without using too much breath. She always encouraged me if I felt like I did not do as well as I wanted to do, and gave me various exercises to do and videos to see when I get home to practice. By using these techniques, I was always sure that I had learned something every lesson. Overall, I highly recommend anyone who wants to learn how to sing that Helen B is the one who you are looking for.
