About Loretta
I have always been fascinated with how music is created and who works behind the scenes of performances and recordings. I started playing the flute in elementary school, piano in junior high school, and singing in high school. Once I got to UMASS, Dartmouth I chose the Music option for my major. I then moved on to NYU. I have been teaching for over ten years now. Working with students both in person and online has been amazing. With online lessons I am able to work with students who love the convenience of being at home and in person I can show students what it is like to really grow! I love my students of all ages, and can only hope to show others how amazing music can be. I have worked with a handful of students with special needs and am comfortable teaching in a non-traditional style. I am currently preparing to complete my certificat
ion in music therapy. Those who can do teach, and those who can teach totally do!

*** Lesson Details ***
You will set the pace for your lesson. I want you to enjoy your time in music, so your lessons will be completely customized. We will develop a goal plan for you so that our time together is interesting, fun, and we make progress! In 3-6 months, you will have a stable technical program and have started a portfolio of music for performances, no matter what level you are. We can share sheet music in person or online (I can even email you great links to amazing performances). Just let me know where you want to be in music, and we'll work together to make it happen. My home studio is in a private music room. Parents can relax in our family space with coffee or tea and enjoy their children's learning at their leisure. My studio includes a 88-key keyboard, technology setup with an iMac, microphone and stand, a mirror for posture and musical instruments. I carry books for the lessons themselves (not for practice at home), and we can download or print out music as desired. If you take lessons online, I can email you links and sheet music as needed. Feel free to bring any additional equipment music you would like to share. I have some great recommendations for music books designed for both children and adult learners.

Loretta has been a very patient and open-minded voice teacher. She uses a holistic approach, listening to student needs and fears while continually, gently encouraging growth. I've never felt uncomfortable with her style of feedback and her approach has really helped me to find and unlock my voice.

The private lesson experience is unique in that it allows for more “customized” instruction that group lessons or rehearsals alone are not able to give. The instructor and student work one on one as a “team” toward the ultimate goal: a better understanding of their instrument, and a higher level of musical development.

In every lesson, we will work to improve technique, tone production, and listening/music reading skills, among other things. I will assign exercises and/or pieces each week that are meant to challenge, not overwhelm! Sometimes I will assign an exercise that is expressly meant for a particular area in which the student may not be the strongest, in an effort to develop that area. Learning an instrument is a skill that takes time to develop, and it is within the journey where most valuable learning takes place!

About Amanda
Amanda is a professional Pittsburgh-area flutist and private teacher. She has served as principal flutist with the Pittsburgh Philharmonic as well as second flute/piccolo with the Undercroft Opera. She has also served as a substitute flutist for the Edgewood, Westmoreland and Johnstown Symphonies. Amanda also performs with the Dolce Appassionato Trio, a chamber ensemble comprised of flute, cello, and piano. She is active as a soloist, performing in a variety of venues throughout the Pittsburgh region.

An ardent advocate of early music and historical performance, Amanda also plays the baroque flute. She has performed in masterclasses for internationally known baroque flutists Kim Pineda, Janet See, and Barthold Kuijken.

Amanda received a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from Seton Hill University, and a Master of Music de
gree in flute performance from Duquesne University, where she studied under Damian Bursill-Hall of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

About Kareem
A native of the Pacific Northwest, saxophonist Kareem K is a performer, composer, and educator, who is in high demand for his talents both on and off the stage.

Growing up in the northwest with its vibrant music scene allowed Kareem the opportunity to study with, listen to and perform with world class jazz artists residing in the area. Artists such as Tracy Knoop, Jay Thomas, Don Lanphere, Bill Ramsay, Hadley Caliman, Julian Priester and many others had a large impact on Kareem early in his musical education. This direction and guidance continues to inspire and lead Kareem as he continues his lifelong passion undertaking a career as a professional musician.

Today, as a performing artist he spends most of his time leading his group for which he composes and arranges most of the music. The band is constantly on the move as a sought af
ter performing group and spends most of its time performing in and around the Pacific Northwest. When not leading his own group Kareem can be seen and heard performing as a sideman with many other top notch musical acts and projects, most notably The Paperboys from Vancouver BC.

As an educator Kareem divides his time teaching jazz improvisation as an artist in residence at The Tacoma School of the Arts, directing the award winning student jazz ensemble at Pierce College, conducting masterclasses and workshops at schools around the Puget Sound area, and maintaining a full load of private students. Along with his teaching duties Kareem is the director or The Tacoma Jazz Association, serves on the Tacoma Arts Commission, and is a D'Addario Woodwinds performing artist.

Kareem holds a Bachelors Degree of Music from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle Washington which he attended after receiving a full scholarship.

Throughout his years of teaching Kareem has worked with students of all ages and abilities, from beginners just getting started, to advanced players who simply want new ideas and direction.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are relaxed and are focused on what you would like to learn.

I usually begin with assessing where students are in their abilities and then come up with a lesson plan based on what they already know and what they would like to accomplish.
They can be geared towards a 5 year old with no musical training whatsoever, or to an advanced musician who wants to further develop their skills.

Topics that I cover in lessons throughout a typical day of teaching include: Instrument technique, sight reading skills ( note and rhythm recognition ), memorization skills, music theory, ear training, improvising, and composing.

After 3 to 6 months of lessons and regular practice a beginning student should have a good command of their instrument and a strong foundation of sight reading. At this point we normally will also have started some music theory as well. For students wanting to focus on jazz we will have already begun improvising as well.

I focus on the basics of learning to read music and basic technique on the instruments that I teach. My daughter absolutely loves Mr. K!! He is very patient and takes his time to always answer ANY questions she has. She loves taking piano due to him being so awesome!! If you are looking for a great teacher for your little one there is no need to look any further!!

Kareem has been teaching me since I was in the fourth grade. I am currently in 8th grade, and man what can I say, he's as good as it gets! After two years I was in my middle school jazz band, which is not easy for a person who has only been playing for two years. You, yourself will be able to see extreme progress within just a few lessons! You must know Kareem teaches at Pierce College, a class at the Tacoma School of the Arts (which I hopefully will be attending and taking his class), teaches numerous private students every week, and lastly he performs with a stellar jazz band of his own! He is extremely dedicated to the musical field. If I were anybody reading this review and wanted to start playing any of the variety of instruments he plays, I would call Kareem K.!

Kareem is a dedicated and diligent musician and teacher. He is able to share his love of music with students of all ages. Not only is he extremely capable of teaching students the technical aspects of music, but his lessons incorporate a wider perspective as well, such as, listening to different genres of music and asking his students to discuss what they hear. He is always positive and encourages students to do their best. He has style and class and it is a privilege that two of my children can study under his tutelage.

Dr. Carl S. will be teaching at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical beginning August 2017. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, assisting with the KU Jazz Festival, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen,Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr.,Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Carl's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. In 2013, Carl performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Carl directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

​Dr. Carl is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl will be performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale.

Carl is a great teacher for our 12 year old daughter. He's engaging, encouraging and relatable, and has a great musical talent. My students have gone on to win local and state-wide competitions and have been accepted to collegiate music programs.

Music lessons teach much more than music. In addition to music knowledge, I hope my students walk away from flute lessons with a sense of self-confidence, an inquisitive mind, and a joy for learning. My students and I work together to create fun and attainable goals while learning the importance of responsibility, punctuality, and self-motivation. When my son Charles approached me asking to take flute lessons I was skeptical. Our family is not musical and I had no idea where to begin the search for a flute teacher! Fortunately, Katelyn was teaching a friend of Charlie at the time and allowed us to come in and observe the lesson before we jumped in to flute lessons. Her rapport with the students and the bond she works to build with them is amazing. Charlie learned so much more than the flute during his time with Katelyn--she encouraged his creativity in all aspects of his life and helped him build self-confidence during hard times. Charlie is no longer playing the flute but the things he learned with Katelyn continue to help him in his daily life.

Katelyn taught flute to my daughter Elizabeth through all of high school. She began in ninth grade and Katelyn helped her excel in her band program, at solo and ensemble festival, in all-state band and orchestra, and eventually in college auditions. Elizabeth is now a sophomore at Ohio State University where she majors in music education and we don't believe she could have done it without the gentle encouragement and support of Katelyn during her high school years! Music lessons are a great investment in your child's future and we would recommend them to anyone!
