French horn is my secondary instrument. I have spent a number of years practicing and have even had a few occasions to perform with it when trumpet is not needed. Anyone up to high school ability level is welcome to get in touch.

About James
Hello everyone! Please have a look around my profile and feel free to contact me. I have taught privately since 2009 and joined takelessons.com in 2014.

I strongly feel each student needs lesson goals tailored to what he or she wants to take away from music. Getting ready for a college performance degree, making it to state solo contest, surviving band music, or simply discovering the huge scope of music available to us these days are each worthy goals, but require different preparation. I will work with you to figure out where your interests lie and focus on those, first and foremost!

My education includes bachelor's and master's degrees in trumpet performance from Lawrence University and UW-Milwaukee, respectively. In addition to my private studio, I maintain an active teaching schedule with the Fairfield Jr/Sr High School marchin
g band and Oregon Crusaders drum and bugle corps, as well as freelancing throughout Michiana.

Thanks for your time, and happy practicing!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I can provide: music stand, method books during lessons, recording equipment for lessons, tuner, metronome

Students should provide: instrument/mouthpiece, any other music they would like to play

*** Specialties ***
I have spent most of my playing time on classical (orchestral, chamber, and solo music), but also welcome students interested in jazz up to an intermediate level, especially if they have an interest in playing lead trumpet.

Lessons for people who are new to the instrument, or people who are/ want to be at the intermediate level.

About Michelle
I'm studying music education at Wayne State University and I've been teaching students for a few years, but started as a paid teacher in June 2013. I teach basic piano and music reading to young children.
I am both a woodwind and brass player; I started as a clarinet/bass clarinet player, then I switched to horn in high school and have played flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba. I started as a clarinet player back in September of 2006 and as a horn player in January of 2011. Horn is my primary instrument now, but I also play clarinet and saxophone in pit orchestras and other ensembles.
I am an active player in the Wayne State University Bands and Orchestra, while staying an active member of the Rochester Community Concert Band (formerly called the Rochester College Concert Band).

Michelle is great. Always on time and even when running only a couple minutes late she will let us know right away. Very nice with my 12 year old son. We have been taking lesson with Michelle for almost a year now and we think she is the best! I would highly recommend her for younger kids no matter what playing level.

I use a variety of materials to best fit what the student needs and would like to get out of taking lessons. I enjoy teaching and playing music and I try to make sure my students have fun as well!

About Phillip
Hello! My name is Phillip M. and I have been playing the Horn for 15 years now. I started back in elementary school and haven't looked back since. After high school, I went to Central Michigan University where I earned my Bachelor of Music in Horn Performance while studying under Dr. Bruce Bonnell. While I was at CMU, I performed with the Symphony Band, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Marching Band, Horn Choir, and a Horn Quartet. I then went to Western Illinois University where I studied under Dr. Randall Faust and earned my Masters in Horn Performance. While at WIU I performed with the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Brass Ensemble, and Horn Ensemble. I also played with several local organizations while at WIU including the Quincy Symphony Orchestra, Monmouth Civic Orchestra, Quincy Community Theatre, and
the Knox-Galesburg Symphony. I also have solo experience and have put on a junior recital, senior recital, two graduate recitals, and I performed the Hindemith Horn Sonata with the WIU Symphony Orchestra as a Concerto Competition winner as well as participate in many horn studio recitals during my college career. I am now living in Rochester Hills where I have been teaching private lessons, teaching Horn sectionals to local schools, and performing in several local orchestras including the Oakland Symphony Orchestra and Macomb Symphony Orchestra. I am willing and happy to teach all levels of musicians and I hope you consider me if you are interested.

Make the french horn sing as we work on your all-region material, your college audition work, or your festival music. We will also work on tone development, range, and finger technique.

About Matthew
Hi, I am Matt. I am a band director in the Fort Smith, AR area. I am in my 7th year teaching band and love every minute of it. I have recently decided to return to teaching private lessons, and would love to help you with your auditions, festival music, AP music theory exams, or just learn some skills on becoming a better musician. Outside of the audition music, we continually work tone production, range, and confidence on any brass instrument. In college I had a small guitar studio as well. Some of those guitar students have gone on to study at the collegiate level and gig around town today! I am comfortable teaching at all levels, but my expertise is centered around student development at the middle school to high school level.

June 2012 - June 2015 I was the head band director of Waldron High School. We won several awards through ou
r marching and concert band program. I also ran after school lessons in which many students made our region honor band.

June 2015 - Present
I am currently the head director at Trinity Junior High in Fort Smith. I run a 7-9 band program that includes both marching and concert band seasons. Our student involvement is quite high as our band program serves about 50% of our total student population. My band here has received many superior and excellent through our state association, and 15 of 60 students made our local honor band in 2017,

Hello! My name is Katie and I currently study music education at Grand Valley State University. I have been playing on the french horn since August 2007. I am looking to build my studio with beginning to intermediate players. I am also wanting to teach basic music theory lessons along with rhythms. I have been in marching band as a mellophone player for 6 years. I am willing to make at home visits and to have lessons held at my home.

About Katie
I love to inspire students to practice, that is where the real magic happens. I love to see them not only set goals for themselves but reach them. I am willing to do whatever it takes to see them succeed. I love working with people and encouraging them. I have been a horn player since August 2007. I am studying french horn at Grand Valley State University but am also efficient in euphonium, piano, music theory, aural (reading rhythms and reciting them aloud), and trumpet. I have been in marching band for 6 years on mellophone so I can also help with teaching marching techniques and mellophone playing since it is very different from french horn.

I have been teaching horn for 8 years at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. And I have studied with some of the best orchestral horn players around. Jim Smelser, second horn of the Chicago Symphony, was my primary teacher and I have performed along side him in that orchestra. I specialize in technical issues, but I always put emphasis on the music. Regardless of your skill level I feel that we can work together to get you to any level of musicianship you desire!

About Payton
I am a freelance horn player and I have been the horn for 15 years. However, I have been involved in music for my entire life. I earned my Bachelor's degree from East Carolina University and I just recently received my Master's degree from Depaul University where I studied with Jim Smelser, second horn of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. While I was still in North Carolina, I was on the substitute horn list for the North Carolina Symphony as well as assistant/utility horn in the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle. I performed in various other freelance groups in the Raleigh area and played regularly as second horn in the NC Ballet Academy's production of "The Nutcracker." While in School I was a finalist in multiple solo and concerto competitions, including the NC Symphony's young artist competition. Since moving to Chicago and studying wit
h Jim Smelser, I have had the opportunity to perform with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra which was an absolute dream come true.

Besides performing, I have been teaching for 6 years at various skill levels. I enjoy teaching and working with students to figure out the best ways for them to learn new skills. I have my own tricks that I like to use to fix technical issues, but I like to think of lessons as a more collaborative process. I am dedicated to my students and will do everything I can to help fix any problems, whether it be technical, musical, or even personal, I want to help.

Music is such a passion for me and few things make me happier than playing my horn. More than anything, I want to be able to share this passion with anyone who is interested in learning!

I specialize in beginning lessons which means that I will endlessly look for fresh, new ways to explain techniques to fix all students and learning types. In addition, I have studied under several great teachers which has allowed me to see how they teach. Past students have made great success and are now playing in their ensembles with great confidence. My goal is to ultimately get each of my students the skills they need to have fun with music for the rest of their lives.

About Corey
Corey has established a good foundation for his career as a horn player. Corey has played Principal Horn on many great horn pieces such as Hanson's Symphony No. 2, Shostakovitch Symphony No. 5, Mendelssohn's Midsummer Nights Dream, Brahms Symphony No. 1 and No. 4, as well as many more. While he has played Principal Horn on some large repertoire, he is a well rounded player in both the high and low register. He has also won many honors and has performed in a masterclass through the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra led by Ronald Beitel, former Principal Horn of the Utah Symphony Orchestra.

Corey has had the honor to study with many great teachers. His primary teacher is Darcy Hamlin (3rd Horn Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra). Corey is currently a Freshman at the DePaul University School of Music with scholarships from the DePaul University Sch
ool of Music and the Kohler Foundation that when combined cover his full tuition.
