Renee G.

Portage, IN

About Renee

I have been teaching piano to students of all ages for the past 26 years. I studied piano at St. Bonaventure University under Laura Peterson. I have accompanied many in talent shows, and competitions. I presently play the piano at our church.
I have taught students that have gone on to higher learning in piano. Some of my students have competed in nationwide festivals and placed well. They have entered local and statewide contests. They placed well in their categories.
I believe that each student should have goals for their talent. I want to work with the student's goal to achieve t
heir very best. I believe each student is a unique individual who will become a performer according to the practice that they put into it
I am looking for students who want to have fun while learning to play the piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
Each beginning student will receive a curriculum that fits them best. I use a variety of curriculum. If the student already has begun in a curriculum we can continue to use that one if it fits their goals appropriately.
Each student will learn how to play the piano and the theory behind the music. We will do games to reinforce the lesson. We also learn scales and arpeggios and chords and how they fit together.
I expect at least 5 days of practice to progress consistently at their ability level. They will keep track of practice in an online journal.
Usually if the student follows the recipe of consistent practice they should finish each year's curriculum as scheduled. I include motivational activities we do as a group once a unit is finished. Some students finish before one year is up and are able to start the next level which is very exciting for them.
I encourage them to play for variety shows, fairs, church and other public places to help them with performance .
Its great to see their faces shine and the confidence they show once the student connects with the piano and learns their first song.
The other exciting thing I love to see is when a student comes to a difficult challenge and we break it down so they can actually learn the difficulty and experience success!!!
Wow what a motivation!!!
The student then learns that they can get over hurdles not only in piano but in life too.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano in a designated music room with a library full of music.
Space for integrated games from the lesson

*** Specialties ***
My specialties are really motivating students to have fun learning to play the piano.
We learn to read the notes, relate sound and express ourselves through the beauty playing the piano.
I am willing to use a variety of styles to help students learn to play the piano such as classical, rock , pop, hymn, jazz and more through the variety of method books such as Alfred, Bastien, Faber and Faber, and more.

I have taught Autistic children ages 8-15 who have a high recommendation. I also have taught a Down Syndrome girl.

Renee is a very enthusiastic, kind teacher, and has a way of breaking things down to where they can be understood. She is very sensitive to the student, so a lesson is not generic- she pays attention to the student, not just the books. A great teacher!

Marissa V.

Alsip, IL

About Marissa

My musical journey started in high school when my algebra teacher saw me in the hallway, grabbed my hand and brought me to the choir room to sign up for The Sound of Music auditions. To this day I cannot believe my math teacher unknowingly sent me straight down a path that I would walk the rest of my life. After The Sound Of Music I never left music. I kept singing in high school by participating in the school musicals and different choir ensembles. When it came to college I started taking private lessons and music classes for fun until I realized this is my passion and I wanted to make a l
ife of this. When you wake up everyday and the first thing you do is sing at that point there was no other way to live. There I started my journey with really learning the voice as an instrument and how it works. I found that I am a vocal scientist at heart believing you will go a long way as long as you know how to grow. Being a vocal scientist, I find it so interesting to know what exactly needs to happen when we sing in order sing in a healthy and beauitful manner.

While I was at Moraine Valley after I firmly choose music I felt I needed more of a diverse program so I can answer any possible music based question. I then went on to get my degree at VanderCook College of Music where they teach nothing but music education. Their program intensely teaches all the band and orchestral instruments on top general education classes and your major, mine being voice. While I was there I also took the time to study privately with our percussion professor to learn rhythms and with our sight singing and ear training professor to further develop my ear and knowledge. All in all I have been studying the voice for 11 years and counting. I do all this so that I could pass that experience down to you.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my lessons I like to teach vocal techniques such as raising your soft palate, correct breathing techniques, and a forward placement. These are the tools to help a vocal musician grow for the rest of their lives.

Another part of being a vocal musician that I teach in every lesson is ear training and or rhythm. These are things I wish I would have learned earlier on and are essential to being an independent musician.

I like to keep a more uplifting environment when teaching so although you should expect a push for success, you should always feel comfortable and not afraid to make mistakes.

***Schedule***
This section is updated regularly. I currently have regular open slots and every other week spots available. If you plan on every other week please messege me with the ask a question feature to see when those times are. Thank you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the studio room, electric piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide literature and a music stand while the students should have a full length keyboard and or piano.

*** Specialties ***
I teach rhythm, sight singing and ear training, general musical terms, as well as specific vocal techniques.

Nick comes from a family of four generations of music in the GREEK/Balkan repertoire. He graduated from Columbia College of Chicago with a concentration in Music Composition in December of 2009. Currently teaching and performing professionally, Nick enjoys all styles of music, but has been declared as an "old soul" by many of his friends. I hadn't played the trumpet in 30 years. My first lesson with Nicholas was like starting from scratch. He is very knowledgeable, polite, professional, and definitely patient. I feel that that homework Nicholas assigned was spot on. I'm playing better already after only two days. I would certainly recommend him to a friend.

Nicholas really tailored the lessons to what I needed. They weren't cookie-cutter lessons, and I appreciated that. He answered all the questions I had, and helped me understand some concepts that I never would have gotten just learning online. I definitely recommend him as a teacher.

Nicholas was very patient, took the time to write down information that was helpful (very helpful). Nicholas understood where I was in reference to me knowing nothing about the guitar and he is very knowledgeable with the music trade. He was very clear and kept things simple. I truly enjoy his instructions, can't wait for the next lesson.

Blake C.

Lowell, IN

About Blake

Hi, my name is Blake C. I teach guitar, singing, piano, drums, and bass online or at my Lowell, Indiana studio.

I also teach business, grammar, math (elementary, basic, pre-algebra) writing to include essay and professional business writing.

As a doctoral student at the University of New England, I am currently studying educational leadership with an emphasis on transformative leadership. In addition, I hold a Master of Science degree in Strategic Leadership from the University of Mary located in Bismarck, North Dakota and a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from WGU in Salt
Lake City, Utah.

I have more than 26 years of experience as an executive and senior leader in the supply chain/logistics industry. Furthermore, I have nearly six years of experience consulting in business management, quality control, continuous improvement, education, and training.

During the same 26 years of my business career, I have been a professional musician - session musician and teacher. I was formally trained at the American Conservatory of Music and the Chicago Musical College, both located in Chicago. I won the Presidential Scholarship in Classical Guitar Performance at the American Conservatory of Music and another full-ride scholarship in Classical Guitar Performance to attend the Chicago Musical College.

My primary Classical Guitar Instructor at both institutions was Paul Henry. I also studied Rock Guitar with Dave Uhrich while attending both institutions and privately studied Jazz Guitar with Scott Reed. I studied voice with Audrey Evans at the American Conservatory of Music and Robert Long at the Chicago Musical College.

I have participated in Classical Guitar Master Classes with Hubert Kappel, Dale Kavanagh, Eleftheria Kotzia, Bruce Holzman, Stephen Aron, Raphaella Smits, Richard Provost, Nicholas Goluses, and William Buonocore.

*** Lesson Details ***

I design lessons individually according to the needs and "wants" of each student. I specialize in developing and correcting technique in technique to improve the student's overall skill. Students that dedicate the time and effort each week to practicing see rapid and sustained results.

However, if you have a busy life and merely want to learn guitar for personal enjoyment, I will design your lessons to develop your skill at a pace that works for you, which can fluctuate according to your schedule.

***Young & Special Needs Students***

I teach children as young as 13 years old and adults to the age of 70 years old. When teaching younger children and individuals with special needs, it is significantly beneficial for parents to attend each lesson - I have parent seating available. When parent(s) attend lessons, the parent can assist the younger student while practicing during the week at home.

In my experience, the overall musical development and progress of younger students improve considerably when parents are involved.

***Thoughts on Musical Talent***

Musical talent is a wonderful gift, but correct technique is not easily acquired without proper instruction. Your skill level eventually plateaus and your ability to learn and perform more complicated music is inhibited, unless you have a solid foundation in music theory as it applies to your instrument(s) as well as proper technique.

I can help you build this solid foundation and will guide you through the development of musical skills; correcting flaws in technique is my specialty.
