I've been teaching piano now for 15 years. My goal is for the student to learn to play by feel in addition to reading music. A standard lesson would consist of some playing in books and going over some music theory followed by playing by feel. This would include blues, jazz, and rock grooves. My approach is creative and customized to the prospective student. The student needs to enjoy learning the piano. A happy student is a successful one.

About Paul
I am a musician who has played in many bands. My primary instrument is piano and voice. I also play rhythm guitar. My current group is a "Who" tribute band, performing a complete history of the rock group, The Who. Please check out our website magicbustour.com
I play by ear but also read music. If you are looking for an old school, rigid, teacher who only has students only follow books, then you should look elsewhere. If you want to be able to play or sing with feel and learn music theory with some reading in a comfortable working studio then contact me.

Experienced piano teacher of 7 years! My lesson plan is simple : 1. we warm up with basic scales + finger exercises, 2. we focus on tone + proper technique, and 3. we play a variety of solo pieces, duets, and ensemble music (I prepare backing tracks to help w/ rhythm and timing... or play the parts myself).

The time devoted to each portion of the lesson is totally adjustable. You will learn what you want to learn at your own pace.

About Ryan
Experienced cello, drum, piano, and guitar player of 20 years. Has a MFA degree in music composition + a BFA in music performance. Recorded professionally for tv shows such as "Glee," "Entertainment Tonight," and "Extra." Also records for "Sonoton Recordings." Currently resides in Los Angeles, California. I could not ask for more in a teacher. Ryan is amazing in every way. He has been teaching my 4 year old son the drums for nearly a year. When my son started lessons, he was actually below the minimum age for students, but he shared a passion for music that Ryan was willing to cultivate and be patient with.

Ryan is versatile in his teaching methods, creative, open, patient. Teaching a young student, Ryan adjusted to teaching music reading fundamentals with colors and shapes. He also figured out ways to correct, critique and build all the while building a young child's confidence.

Ryan provides a written evaluation of our son annually and has him prepare for two public recitals a year. Ryan integrates modern technology into the lessons to quickly provide feedback and create customized beats and tempos to practice to.

Above all, Ryan smiles and laughs. He makes every lesson pleasant and we treasure him, truly.

I have been taking piano lessons from Paula for close to 10 years, and it has been great experience. I have learned to play a variety of music from rock to classical. Some qualities I like about Paula is that she is patient, and she will challenge and encourage you. We have played various venues in Knoxville, but my favorite is the Fantasy of Trees. It is a great way to support Children's Hospital. Young or old, I highly recommend Paula for anyone wanting to learn piano.

Upon re-locating to the area, we were referred to Paula Johnson for our daughter's continuing lessons. We were fortunate to have four years with Paula before our daughter left for college. During that time, our daughter was challenged in all genre's of music and excelled under Paula's excellent tutelage. Her instruction in theory and practical application instilled skills in our daughter that she has taken with her into her adult life and will enjoy in the future.

My daughter has been taking piano lessons from Paula for over 4 years, she started when she was just 9 and knew next to nothing about music. Paula is great teacher, very patient and has provided lots of different music options (Disney movie theme songs, Classical, Jazz and Christmas classics) which has helped to keep my daughter interested in continuing to play.

After 10 years of valuable teaching experience, I offer lessons to all ages/levels in piano, flute, voice, composition, song-writing, and music theory. I am a dedicated and passionate music educator with years teaching in every kind of setting-- from starting education programs with professional symphony orchestras in U.S. city schools, to being a Suzuki certified flute and piano teacher in Tanzania, to teaching flute to a class of 40 girls every week in the Middle East, I have gained life experience that has allowed me to grow to be an effective and enthusiastic music teacher. About Nikhil D.

Portland, ME

I am a classically trained (but folk-inspired) pianist, who's been performing on stages across the northeastern United States for the past 4 years. As a teacher, my hope is to collaborate with students to help them play and understand music that inspires them. Lessons will primarily focus on learning songs of the students choice. We'll study theory and technique as well, but the aspects of these that we focus on will be in the service of the songs that we're trying to learn.

My background as a pianist is in classical music, with a few years studying jazz during my late teens and early twenties. The years of training have taught the value of proper technique and playing style, but my focus in adulthood has been my songwriting, which leans toward folk & americana. Today, I play and lead a Portland based Indie-folk group called SnugHouse.

About Nikhil
I found myself living in Maine about 7 years ago, when I started studying for my undergraduate degree at Bowdoin College. Before then, I had lived all over the place, most notably in Saratoga, California and New Delhi, India. I'm enjoying life here immensely - though I'm still getting used to the cold!

Playing and listening to music has been a consistent thread through my life, and I think it's a big part of the reason that home has never needed to be a place for me - it's always been a question of emotional connection to the people around me. I studied Math and Computer Science in college, though I was fairly certain even then that I'd be pursuing a career in music before long.

Today, my primary creative outlet is in performing with and leading my five-piece indie folk band, SnugHouse. Working with the group has been a very fulfilling
marriage of my pursuits as pianist, guitarist, singer and vocal arranger. We play shows regularly all around the northeast. If you're curious, you can check us out on social media, or wherever you listen to music!
