Understanding Music Theory has many benefits. When performing music, understanding the theory behind a piece can help you to effectively improvise, make it easier to memorize and allow you to understand what is happening or about to happen.
It allows you to analyze compositions that you like and understand why they sound so cool. It could be that it is using a tried and true technique that has been around or "breaking the rules." In memorable composition, there is usually a surprise.
My area of specialty is commercial music which incorporates popular music and jazz.
The content of study would depend on what your current level of knowledge and what you want to accomplish.
