As a beginner with zero experience playing any instruments, I am so grateful for Nabin's expertise, patience, and natural ability to instruct. Nabin makes it easy and fun to learn playing the tabla. He sets reasonable expectations, creates a fun and low-stress environment, and is lovely to work with! I look forward to continue working with him and would highly recommend him!

Nabin is not only an incredibly skilled musician, but he is incredibly skilled at teaching music in a cohesive way. His perspective on music as a whole, as well as tabla, has expanded my learning greatly. I am grateful for every lesson as I know I will come out of it with new valuable information to instill in my practice.

I have been teaching Tabla for the last 13 years in Chicago, New Jersey, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

The initial few years of Tabla is focused on proper hand/finger placement and technique. Starting with few simple letters and building them into phrases, sentences, and full compositions. I try to exposure students to the language of the music. Therefore, I give students a general framework and ask them to compose themselves. As I guide them through the process, this exercise empowers students to create on their own and strengthen their logical thinking process.

Once students are able to produce desired sounds and play certain compositions in a Tabla solo repertoire, I introduce accompaniment material which can practically be applied when performing with singers, instrumentalists, and dancers.

Along the way, I share historical information on the art as well as recommend resources such as books, recordings, and websites for a well-rounded learning experience.

This teacher misrepresented her ability to teach the C system chromatic button accordion. I don't believe that she has ever played one. I asked her before purchasing a set of classes if she knew this instrument and was competent to teach it, and she said she was.

She didn't have one, so she could never demonstrate anything I asked about. She didn't know the key layout. She didn't know the conventions for numbering fingers. She didn't know the basic home key scale pattern.

I waited until I'd finished four classes with my new teacher before writing this so I'd have a good basis for comparison. He is immensely better at teaching this than she was. It further convinced me that she never should have represented herself as competent to teach this particular instrument.

"As a continuing tabla student, having started the study of tabla and mridangam a while back, I am so happy to have found Nabin. Nabin Shrestha is a busy performing artist as well as a top-notch instructor. On the first lesson Nabin knew exactly where I was at and what I needed to work on. Nabin as a teacher challenges me to the point where I can’t keep up, then instead of letting me throw my tablas under a steam-roller, he backs it up a little bit and allows me to catch up. Nabin’s prolific mastery of tabla includes a vast repertoire of traditional and original compositions, endless variations of these compositions, thorough knowledge and application of a variety of styles and techniques, as well as the ability to transmit as much of this as a diligent student can assimilate. Nabin is extraordinarily patient as I struggle with basic concepts like how to count to three. Joking aside, Nabin is a top notch performer and instructor and I would highly recommend him to anyone who seriously desires to learn this art. Thank you Nabin for being so generous and taking the time to share with me the poetry that is the art of tabla!"

"Nabin Shrestha is an exceptional teacher of the tabla. He is a great choice for learning this profound art- form for all ages and all walks of life. On a personal level I have found him to be very focused in his teaching style but also very patient and very process oriented - which is the kind of teacher I need seeing how I just do this for “fun.” For those who want to learn this art as more of a career path my feeling is that Nabin would also be exceptional because of both his diligence and enthusiasm to classical Indian music. I have also known that Nabin is open minded to other approaches as he has collaborated with other musicians of the “rock” genre, etc. So if you are looking for a table teacher that has a strong creative side Nabin is the man."

"Nabin helped me realize one of my dreams of being able to play Indian percussion instruments. Being an absolute beginner, helped with my instrument purchase and started me on the basic notes and rhythm patterns. Under his direction, I maintained steady practice habits and was able to progress quite well in a relatively short amount of time.

Nabin ji has a structured curriculum and overlays one simple concept on another to deal with complex topics. Time signatures in Indian music can be tricky and with Nabin’s help I was able to understand the nuances of many different taals over time.

The lessons and one-on-one interaction (pre-pandemic) were great. Material presented was simple and easy to understand and practice at home. Nabin ji certainly had the patience to deal with a complete beginner like me which really helped. :)"

"To attempt to put my experience with Nabin into words... very difficult! As a professional musician but a new tabla student, he knew how to begin with me and what standards to hold me to. I enjoyed how he set up the classes, we would would play together almost the entire time, focusing on several new or reviewed patterns. He would stop and give me points to focus on and continue. This approach allowed for so much memorization and focus on what would create a better result for me. Learning this instrument has literally changed my focus and grown my mind. When we were not playing he would be generous in his time by talking with me about his vast experiences as a musician and person in this world. With many things to share, Nabin connects with his students and is present in the moment from the first note to the last "see you next week". Although I have moved across the world, I will still continue to take online lessons with Nabin. I would and have highly recommended him as a wonderful tabla teacher for any and all levels."
