I combine the styles of music that you prefer with some kind of method book for reading and theory. No purchasing of music is required. Normal lessons start with the previously assigned material, determining what we need to work on, new material, and ending with things to do at home.

Sean was a great teacher. I asked him if he knew how to teach Bollywood style Violin and even though he didn't he took the time to study it and learn just to teach me. I really appreciate that he was so open to trying so hard for his students. I think Sean is great!
Marc T.
Great first lesson. High hopes for follow lessons.

I self-taught myself guitar over 35 years ago; mostly forgotten. Sean began with establishing goals that would meet my goals. The feedback to me during the lessons was focused and delivered in a friendly manner. Progression was enhanced due to his manner and his approach to teaching. While this was the first lesson, I am looking forward to future lessons.

This class is intended for those who have never played a `ukulele, a beginner or continuing student. Yao will learn how to hold, tune, and play the `ukulele for sing-alongs. Basic theory such as rhythmic values (whole, half, quarter, eighth notes), time signatures, etc. will be introduced. You should be able to play several different basic strumming styles, read and understand `ukulele chord charts, transpose songs into other keys, and play along to a large selection of songs, or play at least one song all the way through!

For intermediate students, you will work on more advanced arrangements of songs, strumming styles, increase your chord vocabulary and generally gain a greater knowledge of the `ukulele. You will also learn how to read tablature to play simple melody lines. It will help if you are familiar with the following music theory concepts: key signature (especially the keys of C, F, and G), time signature (3/4, 4/4 and 6/8), and rhythmic values including whole, half, ...

As a new student, there is nothing better than learning to make music. There isn't a better instrument to learn on because it is inexpensive, portable and honestly so much fun!

Believe it or not, you can make a great deal of progress with a little bit of time each day. Once I decided to pick it up as regularly as I could, even if it was literally only 5 minutes, it was clear I was on the right path.

I started when I was 50 having never played an instrument before which has helped me teach others understanding all of the challenges of learning to play.

Sharing the ukulele with my friends and family helped me realize how much I wanted to share it with others. What could be better than sharing the joy of making music?

I hope to see you soon!
Mark

Mark is awesome! Enthusiastic, experienced, attentive, and totally in tune to my developing skill. He sends tips and individualized sheet music between lessons throughout the week, which helps me feel supported while encouraging me to keep practicing. In 3 short sessions, I've already learned a handful of tricks that help me have fun and feel like I'm already playing real music. Thanks so much, Mark!

"I've tried using on line videos and ukulele lesson books to learn to play the ukulele. But I couldn't seem to get past a certain level. I signed up for lessons with Athena and I understand a LOT more about the composition, and how to bring it all together in my playing. She's great at understanding my "why" questions, and is very patient as I learn each new thing. At the end of our lesson she gives me a practice plan so I know what to work on for the week to improve. It's made a big difference. I appreciate how quickly Athena understands what's confusing me about something new, and how quickly she explains it in a logical, clear way. I'm enjoying my lessons, and Athena has been encouraging at each step of the way. If you want to learn a new instrument, or improve your skill, Athena is a great instructor to work with!"

"Eric is a very good teacher. I have no experience in music at all and his instruction offered a nice mix of basic music knowledge and uke specific teaching. In a short time he showed me a variety of playing techniques for the uke that gives me a lot to strive for while offering exercises and instruction for me to work on that will help me steadily improve."

"Grant quickly recognized my level of understanding with chord movement (beginner to intermediate) and we analyzed a song together that will help me recognize chord motion in other songs. This will allow greater chord pattern recognition, and therefore memorization should come easier - which I really want to happen!
This is only my first lesson with Grant, so I likely won't write another review until I've had a few more."
