David Smith is a fantastic teacher, musician and communicator. He understands how to diagnose what issues a student is facing on the horn. He played a very big role in the preparation I did for my senior recital when I was an undergraduate trumpet student, and he was very encouraging throughout the whole process. If you take lessons with him, you are going to get a step by step plan that will help you reach your goals.

I have listed my specialties below, but really whatever type of vocal performance that you're interested in, no matter the genre I try to give you a solid foundation to do whatever you'd like to do. And to have fun while doing it hopefully.

About Nicole
As a voice teacher and voice coach, I strive to help the student get to where they want to be vocally. For me, singing is something that brings me joy and I hope to be able to share that with you.

It took me a while to realize how much music and singing means to me. While studying something entirely different at the University of Maryland, I began studying voice and realized that it was something that I had a gift for. I fell in love with singing art songs, jazz, and opera arias. And while studying at the University of Maryland, I had the opportunity to work as a voice teacher/ section leader with the women's section of a choir, numerous opportunities to work as a soloist and in a few jazz clubs. I was also involved in dance performances and acted as a dance tutor.

Later, when I was invited to sing in Denver I had the opportun
ity to sing in Little Shop of Horrors and to sing with a women's choir. While studying at the University of Colorado Boulder I began to come into my own and started to let my large sound free. (Which for me was a process. Getting your voice where you want it and to where it is capable is work. But, it is fun work and you're always happy when you have these great moments where you get to where you were hoping you could and that your teacher said you would go at some point.) It was there, at CU Boulder that I got the opportunity to start singing in operas. While in Boulder I sang in The Magic Flute, Sarah McKinnon and as a soloist or recitalist.

Also, while there I worked as an actress in a theater company called the Interactive Theater Project for three years. I thought that by getting involved in that that I would be able to act more effectively while singing. It was fun just doing something where you're just working with the spoken word. I had a wonderful time with them and learned a lot about character work and what it takes to connect to the words in an effective way.

In the past few years, I have been a soloist and recitalist in the Washington, DC area and have sung opera in Pennsylvania with Center Stage Opera. Last year, I sang with Center Stage Opera in the role of Bertha. I had the opportunity to sing and to act at the Kennedy Center a few years ago. Also during that time, I
sang in Aleko, the Die Zauberflöte as the Queen of the Night, Serena in Porgy and Bess, and
sang in Ragtime and sang the role of the Wardrobe in Beauty and the Beast.

I am currently working as a soloist, a children's choir director, a chorus member, the director of a recital series, a cantor, and I'm writing monologues and small plays to be performed. I was working as a co-executive producer/casting director for a show that is on Amazon Prime as well. I look forward to what the rest of the year will bring.

*** Lesson Details ***
If you're a beginner, I will help you to understand what you need to get through the vocal line with breath and intonation. We will begin by doing vocal exercises and learn a lot about breathing for singing. I want to help you to make more beautiful tones. I will also slowly begin teaching you how to read sheet music and to help you be a more effective listener when it comes to music. I can also help you to become a better communicator as a singer.

For acting, I will help you to learn how to develop characters and bring the writer's words to life. We will begin by seeing what sort of subjects or genres interest you and what you are doing with those words now, and how you can delve deeper into making the world of the characters something more flushed out.

For beginning piano: I will teach you to learn how the piano is set up, teaching you to read sheet music, beginning theory and to play songs. Something beyond nursery rhymes.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Inside my home studio, I have music, a music stand, chairs, WiFi, a computer, a laptop, a keyboard, a microphone, a metronome, a microphone, an amp/large speaker, and a sofa.

*** Specialties ***
For voice, I would say that my focus is on classical voice. I also sing jazz, gospel and musical theater. For acting, I have done both improvisational and regular scripted plays.

I have taught students with special needs, and as someone with a twin sister with special needs, I am open to teaching students with special needs.

David enjoys teaching students from all different backgrounds and levels of proficiency. Whether you are just starting out or a virtuoso shredder in the making, he is happy to teach you! Over all, he is fairly laid back, as long as you practice. He usually combines work with reading off of the treble clef (what he likens to "eating your vegetables." You may not want to do it, but it will make you a healthier musician!) with learning more popular songs (or songs the student says they would like to learn) through tablature and chord charts, depending on the style of the song.

David is also very pro music theory. He usually incorporates music theory into the curriculum in conjunction with the material already being discussed. He is also very knowledgeable about composition/songwriting, and if the student is interested in learning more about this area, he is happy to share what he knows!

About David
David is a successful singer/songwriter/guitarist out of Baltimore, MD. He has a bachelor's degree in Music with a concentration in composition from Salisbury University, where he also studied jazz and classical guitar . In the 18 years he has been performing (13 of those professionally) and playing guitar, he has released 4 CDs and written over 200 original songs. He has opened for major national acts like Journey, Maroon 5, Toby Keith, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Thrice, Story of the Year, The Bouncing Souls, Eric Hutchinson, Virginia Coalition and Graham Colton. In the process, he has performed at such notable venues as FedEx Field, Nationals Park, Jiffy Lube Live/Nissan Pavilion, the 9:30 Club, Rams Head Live and the Recher Theatre.

As a teacher, David has taught in numerous locations in the Maryland area for the last 16 y
ears. His students generally range anywhere from 4-70+ years old and come from a wide range of backgrounds and levels of proficiency, from basic beginners to advanced. Some of his students have also gone on to pursue careers in music, others have just learned as a hobby, and some have been somewhere in between the two. All are welcome!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in living room with couches, chairs, cables/amps, as well as extra guitars (acoustic and electric) and a bass guitar, if needed.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide amps and stands, etc if needs be. However, if they are already provided for the student's sake/in terms of the student (i.e. I'll bring the equipment needed for myself), this would be ideal.

*** Specialties ***
Pop, rock, jazz, blues, classical, metal and funk.

*** Lesson Details ***
All of my lessons are tailored to the interest of the student! Although I come from a strict technical background, I believe that the love of music and performance comes from experimenting and being creative! In a lesson with me, I suggest repertoire but if something is not working it is never a problem to redirect and find the right path for the student! With the wealth of my experience having been in over 45 musicals, opera's and other productions I can teach and guide the student through any performance and musical interest they may have and bridge the gap between genre's that so many are unable to do.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room, computer, keyboard, couch.

I have also written over 50 songs for guitar and voice and performed with a local band in Santa Barbara, CA , so I have a lot of experience as a songwriter and guitar and can teach those as well too.

We are lucky to have found her!!!

Around a year ago, my daughter decided she wanted to learn to play the guitar! Thanks to Google, we ran into TakeLessons.
Nicole was recommended to us. After reading about her we were quite impressed!
Right after the first lesson and to my surprise, my (very shy) daughter had a great 1st experience with Nicole.
Nicole is a professional in her field AND also in handling kids and knowing how to help them overcome their shyness. She brings out the best in my daughter and also encourages her to sing even write her own notes!
I would highly recommend Nicole. She is truly talented and the greatest teacher!!!

About Dennis
I have been teaching guitar for 25 years in the Washington DC metro area. I work with students 12 years of age and up, but I am especially experienced at teaching adult students regardless of whether they are beginners or have previous guitar experience. I have performed in acoustic Celtic, new age, funk, progressive rock, fusion and contemporary jazz groups and am currently performing regularly as a solo acoustic guitarist. I have composed over 40 works for solo guitar as well as numerous pieces for small jazz bands. I have played on numerous CDs including my most recent solo CD 'DARK MATTER'.

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor the lesson materials to suit the interest of the student but I am dedicated to teaching students at any level to learn to better understand the fundamentals of the language of music. My teaching focuses on critic
al fundamentals of guitar technique including chords, scales and rhythm guitar playing as well as the art of improvisation. A significant amount of time in the lessons is spent actually playing with the students so that the technical concepts are put to use in real music situations. To further the student's understanding of music I frequently teach elements of music theory to those who are interested.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have guitars and amps available for student use although I prefer that the student bring their own instrument. I also have all the needed accessories, cables, stands etc.

*** Specialties ***
Adult students (and older teenagers ) whether beginners or experienced are a particular specialty of mine. Adult learners want to be treated as adults and often times benefit greatly from a more mentor oriented approach to teaching. I like to describe myself as both a teacher and a coach so as to emphasize that the student and I are on the same team sharing the goal of improving their guitar playing and musicianship. We are both on the same path of musical discovery. I am probably just farther along on that path with insights and knowledge that will hopefully help them along their way.

Dennis was my instructor and is a bit modest about his experience. He taught me on my mom's crappy nylon stringed spanish acoustic guitar back in the 80s. I hope he reads this and remembers the little studios at Fox's Music in Falls Church. He patiently taught me Rick Springfield songs, probably against his taste and better judgment. Anyway, he got me started in my teens and I'm still playing some of the tunes he taught me (plus a few hundred others) on a slightly nicer guitar these days, in my 40s. Keep rockin', Dennis, and thanks for helping spark a hobby I still enjoy decades later!

About Orla
Hi there! My name is Orla Conway and I can’t wait to sing with you!!
-The biggest difference between my teaching style and any other local voice coach is: my Relaxation First method.
This wholistic, centering, and therapeutic technique uses guided relaxation to insure that students not only learn about proper vocal technique, but actually master it in a way that is natural to their own voice and learning style.
I am dedicated to nurturing the differences in each students voice, and through this customized approach my students learn to understand their bodies and gain total control over their intonation, resonance, and vibrance.
This simply means that the student will be able to sing any style of music they want!
My Relaxtion First methodology is often viewed by my students as deeply therapeutic as I lead them through exerci
ses which steady the breath, relax the muscles, and center the body. We approach singing as a natural form of therapy that helps the singer understand their body fully, and express themselves effortlessly.
Together we will eliminate tension, strain and pain from the singing experience. We will gain comfort, ease and will highlight the beauty in your unique sound (as opposed to attempting to make your voice conform to someone else's style).
I am here to make you sound like the most authentic version of yourself, and to find the deep joy and expression that comes from letting your voice be heard!

-The most important thing to me when working with singers of any age or ability is:
Helping them learn the correct techniques to keep their voices safe and healthy while singing. A Beginner Lesson Plan begins by covering the three main foundations of healthy happy singing:
1.Posture
2.Breathing
3.Placement (head voice, mask voice, chest voice)
After covering these techniques, my students will be able to achieve almost any style and level of singing they desire. It is totally possible to stretch your vocal range, learn a new style, or incorporate movement into your songs if you follow this method!
I also make sure to focus a lot on confidence and stage presence throughout all of our lessons to help students prepare for upcoming auditions, showcases, concerts, and talent shows.

Applying my Relaxation First methodology to these age-old foundations of strong vocal technique make it easy and natural for you to find your voice and transition out of your stage fright so that you can own that stage like you were born to be there, because you were!!
These are not only vocal coaching sessions, but complete performance-ready-workshops.
I am here to make all your singing and vocal performance dreams come true!

-I began my vocal training:
at the age of 12 learning how to sing classical and musical theater music. I eventually went on to learn jazz and rock vocal techniques before going to Berklee College of Music in Boston where I learned how to sing celtic music and alternative contemporary styles. I have my own band which I write all the music for, and we have performed all around Boston and in New York City.
My students have achieved admission into Berklee College of Music in Boston, lead roles in their school plays such as Peter Pan, Into the Woods, and Julius Caesar. They have achieved new levels of confidence and power that have made them the stars of their local open mics, talent shows, and recitals!

Please feel free to message me with any questions.
It’s my job to make this process as seamless and comfortable for you as possible :)
Let’s get singing!

Expect to cover such performance essentials as: preparation (how to time your skills to be your best self), visualization, confidence and channeling nervous energy, crowd communication, stage presence, and other factors that contribute to your caliber as a performer.

About Andrew
Andrew started playing piano at the tender age of 3. His mom wanted him to spend his endless energy on something artistic so she started him on piano lessons. Very early on it was clear Andrew had a natural, unique ability to connect with the piano. He played in school bands throughout grade school and began performing around DC in high school. While Andrew also plays guitar, drums, and bass, the piano has remained his first love and primary instrument.

At the age of 17 Andrew left DC and started college at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. Andrew studied Jazz Piano but also led big bands, wrote and arranged music, produced and engineered. Shifting from Jazz to Rock in his early 20s, Andrew joined the band Ambulance LTD with which he played all over NYC and the US as well as internationally.

Upon ret
urning to New York from a hectic performance schedule, Andrew began assisting younger students at The New York Piano Academy—helping them to develop their playing skills, as well as their composing and arranging pursuits. The experience exposed his innate ability to build students’ talents through patience and encouragement, consistently taking them farther than they thought they could go. Andrew discovered his passion for teaching and began working with students of all ages, from 3 year-old children to seniors. As a teacher, Andrew focuses on making learning enjoyable while teaching all types of music—pop, rock, jazz, classical, and even Broadway. He tailors his programs to the students and teaches them not only how to play, but also how to hear, enjoy and love music.
