I do a variety of styles in music for the violin. I use whatever method (book or teaching style) is needed to teach what the student needs to learn.

About Chris
I have been teaching private violin for over 20 years, and private viola/cello for about 10. I have taught in Charles and St. Mary's County Public schools. I am a member of American Strings Teacher's Association, National Association for Music Educators (Maryland Music Educators Association), and the Music Teachers National Association (Music Teachers Association of Charles County). As a teacher, I'm very student oriented. We move at your pace. The more you practice, the faster we move. I do encourage learning to read music, but I use multiple ways of teaching to reach my students. Everyone learns in a different way. My primary job is to see you achieve your goals in relation to your instrument. I also encourage that you take every opportunity to perform. There are many groups in the area that allow for different ages and styles of music
. I can help you understand what is going on behind the music and hopefully see what the composer was hoping to convey, if that is something you want to know. When I was a student I always wanted to know "why?". As a teacher, you will know why if I do.

*** Lesson Details ***
I try to keep my lesson area as stress free as possible. It's OK to make mistakes in my studio. I would like you to bring a notebook to lessons as well as your music and instrument. I write as much as I can down because if you were like I was during lessons, I would forget everything I was supposed to be watching for after 3 days. Like I said above, we move at your pace. The more you practice, the faster we move. Questions are a good thing. It shows interest. But sometimes you just have to stop asking questions and just take the leap of faith.
We start with note reading as well as proper form and the parts of the instrument. We also deal with general care. I will tune your instrument every time you come in for lessons until you learn how to tune it yourself. We will review the day before, I will check on what work you've done and then move onto the next song/ technique etc. After we learn how to pluck the first 8 notes, we start with scales and bowing.

After that we move through the "usual" routine. Scale, etude, song(s) or school test songs, audition requirements etc.

I try to keep the same routine because for some students it's easier for them to focus if they know the lesson is going to move in a familiar way. It's reassuring. After we become proficient in the basics, we move into whatever genre you would like to play, within reason. If you are in the school orchestra we will work towards you getting an A.

I would say I'm more laid back when you are not preparing for an audition. Auditions require a lot of work and I want you to do as close to perfect as possible. I become fairly demanding during that time.

In about 6 months, you can play almost any tune you can hear on the radio. Explaining where you could be gets fairly technical and I might as well be talking like Charlie Brown's teacher.

*** Studio Equipment ***
at the B studio: music, music stand, stool, piano, laptop, tuner, metronome.

at home: music, music stands, chairs, computer, laptop, keyboard, microphone, tuner, metronome.

at the A studio: music stand, chairs, laptop, tuner, metronome.

pictures of the B studio are posted it's in Charles County of MD.

The A studio is located in St. Mary's County of MD.

The home studio is located in Charles County, MD.

*** Specialties ***
I am familiar with Paul Rolland's work, Valerie Bobbett Gardner's Violin Virtuosity, as well as Guillespie's. I was brought up Suzuki but haven't been trained in Suzuki. I have taken classes on how to teach to a variety of students so I could hold a teaching license in the state. I do participate with (Canadian) The Royal Conservatory of Music Music Development. This is active in the US also.

Special note: If you are allergic to cats, you will want to take lessons at my other studio location, not at the home.

IF you are contacting me with questions, please include either take lessons or lessons in the subject area so I can find you faster. I get a lot of junk mail and it is easy for me to miss a note from you.

If you’re looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable and patient strings teacher, you will love Mrs. Heins. Both of my sons have been taking lessons from Mrs. Heins for several years (one for viola and one for cello). They have learned so much under her instruction, such as earning All-County and All-State honors. They also practice their live performance skills twice a year during informal musical concerts. Mrs. Heins also offers participation in the Royal Conservatory Music Development program, which can earn your child credit for college. She is a gem and should you choose her, you won’t be disappointed.

I can help beginning students on viola learn the basics.

About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

My son was very nervous about his first online lesson. His instructor had him start right in on the lesson, which helped my son quickly get over his nerves. By the end of the lesson, he was all smiles and feeling very confident about his ability to play a very hard piece for his solo contest. He is looking forward to his next lesson.

I enjoy encouraging beginning & intermediate viola students to develop a love of the instrument and solid technique!

I can also help an advanced student who's interested in fiddle repertoire.

About Laura
Laura has taught throughout her musical career and loves nothing better than to introduce students of all ages to the magic of creating their own music! As a teacher, she focuses on balancing inspiration and explanation. Inspiration: because if you don’t love your music, what’s the point? And technique: because if it’s easy to play and sounds good, you’ll keep coming back for more!

Laura has a BA in Violin Performance and a minor in American Roots Music from Berklee School of Music, has taught privately for nine years, and plays in several bands. Laura has taken firsts in her age division at several fiddle contests, including the California and Nevada Oldtime Fiddle State Champions, Western Open Championships and top 5 in the National Oldtime Fiddle Championships.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I provide sheet music for new tunes, stick
ers, and a basic fix-it kit for common instrument issues. I also try to keep backup books and a shoulder rest around at my studios so if someone forgets their equipment we can still make good use of the lesson.

I expect the student to provide their instrument, shoulder rest/end pin stopper, notebook, device for recording music, folder/binder for loose papers, and books. I don't require lots of books - just ones you'll use!

*** Travel Equipment ***
See Studio Equipment, above.

*** Specialties ***
I love teaching oldtime, bluegrass, country and celtic fiddle - most of what I do as a performer fits in along those lines. I teach Suzuki method violin as well. My Suzuki teacher learned directly from Shinichi Suzuki!

I encourage all my students to improvise, to try different musical styles, and to experiment with composition. My goals are to share my own love for music, and enable students to discover their unique musical voice.

Laura has been a great teacher for my 6 year-old daughter (starting taking lessons when she was 5). She is endlessly patient and has a perfect balance of fun and instruction in all her lessons. She helped us every step of the way--picking out the right rental instrument, finding extra workbooks that would be fun, coming up with ways to make practicing at home enticing. Laura is made to be a fiddle teacher--she has a obvious passion both for the music and sharing it with her students. My daughter left every lesson with Laura beaming with pride. I'd recommend anyone searching for a teacher to go with Laura!

Whether you're a beginner looking to explore a new instrument, or a young professional preparing for an orchestral or college audition, I'm eager to share my passion of music and teaching experience with you. Throughout my teaching and performing career, I have been highly successful at helping students bring out the very best they can offer. Many of my students got accepted to study at major universities and music conservatories, and/or earned positions at orchestras or teaching institutions.

I'm strict and have very high expectations, but I was also praised for being encouraging and supportive. I strongly believe in the power of music, and the many benefits of learning a musical instrument.

About Ferenc
Music has been my greatest passion all my life. I have played the violin since I was eight years old, continued my music education in a special music high school, and eventually earned all my college degrees in violin performance (an Artist Diploma (5 yrs.) from the Franz Liszt Academy (conservatory) of Music in Budapest, Hungary, a Master's Degree from SIU-Carbondale, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison). I've been teaching for 22 years, of which 18 years also as a full-time university professor. Besides teaching, I've been active as a chamber musician (mainly piano trio and string quartet) as well as in orchestral playing (with more than a dozen professional orchestras, including the Las Vegas Philharmonic, Spokane Symphony, Wichita Grand Opera, and Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra).

I highly recommend Ferenc to anyone looking for a violin instructor in the Las Vegas area. I'm an adult beginner who has always wanted to learn the violin. I spent quite a while looking into teachers before I decided on Ferenc and I'm very happy with my choice. He's a very good teacher. I leave each lesson playing (at least a little) better than I did when I walked in. Ferenc knows his craft and he's very good at pointing out both your strengths and areas that could use improvement. He always gives me concrete things I can work on in between lessons and they help a lot. His instruction has been invaluable and I'm certain I wouldn't be progressing at the same rate if I had tried to learn on my own or even with a less skilled teacher. I look forward to continuing to work on my skills with his help.

I have been teaching violin for six years. Though I am classically trained, my interest in music goes far beyond classical music. I am constantly listening to various genres of music and consider myself a forever learner, loving everything in music from Prokofiev to the Flaming Lips. It is my job to help guide my students through their musical journeys, whether that is helping them get into their regional orchestra or teaching them that one song they've always wanted to learn. I teach out of the Essential Elements or Suzuki Method books. Though my lessons are fun and relaxed I will always give my students that extra push when needed. My goal is to help each student reach their personal success and to instill a love for playing music.

Tools for lessons:

Music Stand
Rosin
Shoulder rest or sponge
Previous method books (if you are not a first time learner)
Metronome
Pencil

About Phoebe
Hello! I am a classically trained violinist and violist. I got my Bachelor's degree from the Hartt School of Music in Connecticut and I am currently working towards my Master's at the University of Maryland School of Music. I have a successfully maintained a full studio of violin and viola students and can easily adjust my teaching style to meet each student's needs.

As a performer, I have performed in professional opera and musical theatre orchestras as well as on my own in solo violin recitals. I love working on various genres of music with a special place in my heart for contemporary classical music. I have worked with students between the ages of 6-adult, abilities ranging from beginner to advanced players. F

I'm an adult learner who went through Suzuki book 2 and a few other pieces with Phoebe as my instructor. I spent a month prior with a "bad experience" and hadn't taken lessons in probably 10 years before that.

Working with Phoebe was GREAT. She was very easy to work with and really saw to improving my skills. She was encouraging and very positive. When I had troubles with parts (which was often), she would always have multiple suggestions as to how to practice them to work through the difficulties. She also gave me nudges along when I didn't think I could do certain things too. All in all, I had a great experience working with Phoebe and would have loved to continue to work with her if she was still in my local area.

If you're wondering why not 5 stars, that's more from my lack of experience than any issue with her. The guide says 5 stars is the "best teacher ever". She probably was the best teacher ever for me, but I'm somewhere between beginner and intermediate. Is she a good fit for an advanced student, I'm going to guess that, yes, she is, but I don't know that info personally so I went with 4.

My aim as a teacher is to set students up for success with a relaxed, comfortable technique so that they can produce a beautiful sound soon and become expressive musicians. I believe that people love to do what they can do well! My job is to give students the tools for excellence.

With the knowledge passed down to me from my teachers from the Moscow Conservatory and my passion for helping others learn, I tailor what I teach to the goals, the personality, and the hands of each student. Whether you want to take a traditional classical path towards a professional career, or whether you just want to learn to play for fun, I can help you achieve your goals.

About Michael
I am a professional freelance violinist and teacher living in San Francisco. I began studying violin at the age of 5 and have had the privilege of studying with renowned teachers who taught at Moscow Conservatory, Stanford, and Curtis Institute of Music. I have performed violin and viola in North and South America (including Carnegie Hall and the National Theater of Costa Rica) and in Europe.

My violin and viola students can expect me to tailor the way I teach to their unique goals and learning styles. Everyone's hands and arms are different, and string technique is not "one size fits all." I believe that all students can achieve success and play musically if they have the right tools. My job is to provide students with those tools. I specialize in teaching a relaxed technique that allows players to get a warm, beautiful tone from their
instrument so that they are free to play musically and expressively with confidence!

I teach violin and viola students of all different ages and experience levels. I've studied classical violin for 24 years. I can teach students to read music and pursue excellence in a traditional classical way, or I can teach students how to play their favorite pop tunes, depending on students' personal goals.

I currently serve as concertmaster of the Mozart to Mendelssohn Orchestra in San Francisco, lead chamber music nights with the SF Civic Music Association, and play gigs around the Bay Area. I love being a part of community music-making and believe that the benefits of music education reach far beyond the instrument itself to social and cognitive skills, confidence, and creativity.

My personal passion is classical music but the kind of technique I teach applies to all styles, and I am experienced teaching fiddling, pop music, or whatever music inspires you. I look forward to meeting you and helping you to become a better musician!

Many years of teaching experience both in group and individual settings. I love encouraging students and fostering a love of music. I can teach classical as well as improvisation. I have played as a classical musician, both solo and orchestral, and I’ve played with numerous rock and folk bands.

About Melissa
I began playing violin in elementary school, and immediately knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My first words as a baby were lyrics because I sang before I spoke. I played violin until 11th grade when I fell in love with the sound of the viola.
I studied music performance and music education in college and I have a bachelors degree in both. I have played professionally in orchestras, quartets, as a soloist, and in many rock and folk settings. I have even put my violin and viola through a distortion pedal and a wah wah pedal in heavy metal/punk music. I have over 17 years of teaching experience and am a licensed teacher in the state of virginia. I have taught in a classroom as well as privately, and have also taught students with autism.
As a student of mine you can expect to improve your playing skills week
to week. I can teach from the very first lesson on. Students will learn techniques to improve their playing and will play fun music. If you are interested in learning improvisation, I can help with that, too. I enjoy teaching violin, viola and cello.
I am most passionate about teaching students to become independent, critical thinking musicians who will be able to rely on their own knowledge to learn new music as they go along. I stress music reading, ear training, and strong fundamentals in playing. I am very encouraging, love spreading my love of music.
