I maintain a home studio in Catonsville and my school-age students have consistently been successful in competitions and auditions. I teach all ages, beginner through adult, and would also be pleased to offer flute ensemble or sectionals as well.

I have over 12 years of professional performing experience. While serving with the U.S. Army Field Band, I participated in numerous educational outreach activities ranging from elementary school presentations introducing younger students to music, high school sectionals and individual lessons, Google Hangouts for distance learning, and college-level master classes for flute students and chamber music groups.

I completed a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Maryland, College Park in 2010. My thesis covered modern works by Flutist-Composers. I can introduce you to the work of ext

It's always a BIG plus to learn music theory. A lot of voice students do not read music and sometimes when choral directors want to hear you sing they expect you to sight read a song. I like to teach the basics in music theory and sight singing. I have some fun studies that you will easily learn and it will help you tremendously when you are asked to sight sing. Coral directors ask this of you sometimes and bands who need a singer who can read parts.

I mentioned to Gregory specifically I wanted to learn, which was GarageBand for iPad. He told me he taught middle schoolers and to book with him. I asked for more specificity on could he teach this exact thing, to make sure there was no confusion (please check the conversation he and I had within the takelessons website) and he kept saying book with me. I did.

He may know a thing or two about GarageBand (I don't know that for sure), but he knew very little about iPad GarageBand. It was a complete waste of my time. In text messages I said to him that I would not give him a bad review, but I was going to ask for a refund. He said thank you for not leaving a bad review. But then he wouldn't allow refund. Good God!

So here we are. He wasted 2.5 hours of my time, cost me parking in the city, didn't teach me literally anything, and he wouldn't give up the 50 bucks

All that said, now here I am having to take more of my time that could be used for productive purposes, to have to write a bad review. He really deserves this.

Very nice. It would have been better if I knew what books to purchase ahead of time. To maximize the lesson time, teacher should send expectations and tips for success to students ahead so preparation can take place. Be sure to have your own equipment too.

About Detrece
DeTrece "Dee" Lavender is a native of Miami, Florida. When her family moved to Sarasota, she was afforded the opportunity to study music and the performing arts as a student of the Westcoast School/Henry L. Porter School of Music. It was then that Dee began to understand the power of the creative arts as an effective form of emotional expression and release. By middle school, DeTrece began fine tuning her natural talents by studying classical voice which earned her several starring roles in the Sarasota Youth Opera, The Aslo Theater and the Players Theater. She is also a proud former member of the Westcoast Black Theater Troop in Sarasota, FL. Under the caring leadership of these opportunities, she was able to combine musical and life experiences in order to offer a more well rounded educational and musical experience for her students.


She was awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where she received a dual Bachelor of Music degree in Music Therapy and Vocal Performance (Class of 2003). It was through her service as a music therapist, Millieu (residential) counselor and music teacher in the Boston City Public Schools/Greater Boston Metropolitan Area, that she began to feel the call toward a greater understanding of the gravity and role of the socio-emotional needs of students (and their families/villages) in urban settings. This call brought her to Baltimore, MD where she enrolled in the Pastoral Counseling Masters of Science program at Loyola University. In addition to her studies, she currently teaches Elementary and Middle School choir/ Musicianship teacher in the Baltimore City Public Schools through the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids Program. She also serves as Minister Of Music and Arts at two local churches.

After only two lessons, I can tell he's an awesome guy with a ton of enthusiasm for music and teaching. He definitely knows what he's doing, wants to share that with his students, and took the time to learn about my goals and history with performing. Went above and beyond by sending recordings of exercises to work on at home. So excited to keep working with him.

I've been studying music theory for six years, and I've been a music theory tutor for three years. I currently study music theory pedagogy at the Peabody Institute, and I am a graduate assistant for the music theory department.
Music theory is a mathematical approach to music, and can successfully be taught to every type of learner. I have experience teaching student just beginning, studying musical form, counterpoint, atonality, and ear training. Music theory can be abstract, but it improves the understanding and appreciation of music to a listener, composer, and performer.

My son really enjoyed his time with Madeline. Unfortunately, due to a move we were no longer able to attend this particular location. Madeline created an environment where my son felt very comfortable exploring different music, he always came out of class with a smile on his face. Madeline was instrumental in motivating my child to sing in front of an audience for the first time. This is an experience I don't think we will ever forget. She is encouraging and inspiring, as well as very talented and knowledgeable. We will really miss her.

Miguel is a great teacher.....I'm an adult learning to read music and play an instrument for the first time. Hey there! Here's a little about the violin lessons that I teach.

For me, the absolute best thing about teaching violin is watching the student realize they've accomplished something they once struggled with. It's so fulfilling when my students are proud of the work they've put in. Becoming a violinist can be a lot like putting together a 2000 piece puzzle. It's really difficult at first, and there's a lot of different pieces you don't know where to put yet. Often times you just have to take a break, walk away, and come back to it later because you've been staring at it for way too long. You might leave feeling like you barely put any of it together, but don't fret, the next day is always easier! Eventually, pieces of the puzzle start to form into distinct parts of the picture, and you have a greater sense of intuition for where all th
e remaining pieces will go. The process itself gets easier down the road, because you've developed strategies and have spent so much time looking at your goal, i.e the finished picture on the box.
My role in this little analogy is to ensure you like the puzzle enough to keep going, give you hints on where to put pieces, and to show you the things you've put together that might have otherwise gone overlooked. All of which are easy for me to find simply because I, too, have done this puzzle before!
