I combine many years of professional performing experience in a variety of ensembles and genres, with my advanced education - a Doctorate in Music Performance, to bring a love of music and of playing the flute to my students. I get passionate about helping my students set and meet - even exceed - their goals. Lessons and repertoire are tailored towards individual learning styles.

About Sarah
I maintain a home studio in Catonsville and my school-age students have consistently been successful in competitions and auditions. I teach all ages, beginner through adult, and would also be pleased to offer flute ensemble or sectionals as well.

I have over 12 years of professional performing experience. While serving with the U.S. Army Field Band, I participated in numerous educational outreach activities ranging from elementary school presentations introducing younger students to music, high school sectionals and individual lessons, Google Hangouts for distance learning, and college-level master classes for flute students and chamber music groups.

I completed a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Maryland, College Park in 2010. My thesis covered modern works by Flutist-Composers. I can introduce you to the work of ext
ended techniques on the flute, while also providing a solid foundation in technique, tone production and interpretation.

My 3rd lesson with Sarah today as an adult flute student returning to play after a long hiatus: Truly incredible! Sarah is very attentive to my focus on improving tone, breathing, embouchure & more. Today we also played a couple duets which helped me with sight reading. Molly

I am a professional flautist and have taught flute for more than 20 years to students of all age groups. Throughout my years teaching I have also been a part of a multitude of orchestras and chamber groups, held solo concerts, and done recordings for American composers.

During this time I have developed teaching methods and lesson plans starting with embrasure and breathing techniques and leading to strong memorization techniques through scales and arpeggios. I have also prepared students for solo and chamber music recitals, multiple who have gone to national and international level competitions.

I encourage my students to play music of all periods including classical as well as contemporary while keeping the environment of my lessons very friendly and fun.

I look forward to meeting you and teaching you all I have to offer!

About Klodina
I am an active, professional flutist, having earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in flute performance. For the last 20 years I have been very involved in the music community throughout the world having worked with a multitude of orchestras and chamber groups, done recordings, and held solo concerts in Europe, Africa, and the United States. This has enriched my teaching since with my strong background I have a better understanding of the necessary techniques and skills when sharing them with my students.

I teach students of all ages from beginner to advanced. With years of experience I have developed the ability to adjust my lessons for students of different levels and create a learning environment that is fun yet challenging and full of growth. Having played a variety of genres I encourage my students to choose pieces that s
peak to them while also working on developing their techniques through shorter exercises. My goal is to help my students achieve their goals and surprise themselves going way beyond, because I truly believe there is no limit. With practice, determination, and inspiring lessons my students can reach heights they would never have imagined before.

Teaching Methods:
For beginners I usually work with the Rubank methods book as well as songs that students love to play. I often use flashcards to facilitate with site-reading and slowly introduce all the musical symbols. I adapt different techniques to meet the needs of each student. For intermediate and advanced students I prefer using scales, etudes (exercises), sonatas, concertos and solo pieces of their preference. I especially enjoy playing duets with my students, one of their favorite ways of practicing, as it combines our talents in order to create something beautiful. Through regular practice and mentorship I teach my students to become independent and confident performers as they perform solo, as part of a band, or in competitions. There is no greater joy than being able to teach my students and help them better perform and understand the music they are sharing with others. My goal has always been to be a facilitator of my students' journeys to success and to see them fall in love with the flute just like I did at a very young age.

Tools:
During my lessons I often use a tuner and metronome to help students play on tune and keep the tempo if needed. Additionally, I occasionally use a recording device so students can become more aware of their sound and can learn to self-correct. It is also a great way to hear improvement over time.

Klodina was an extremely thorough teacher, who allowed the student some flexibility in choosing songs and exercises to improve student enjoyment. She also encouraged hard work at home so that lessons could demonstrate progress in my flute playing. There was a technical focus (scales, transitions, arpeggios) to make sure that I could go to the sheet music and play it with ease. Klodina was always a friendly, kind, passionate teacher, and I would recommend her to anyone wanting to improve their musical ability.

She encourages, she finds analogies to explain, she is more patient with me then I am with myself. She also explains the terms, gives tips on how to read the notes. She is able to identify the mistakes and give the right advice on how to improve. Her advice on how to practice made all the difference for me. I started with a giant cookie bite sized embouchure and within a few lessons I have managed to make it smaller thanks to her instructions. There is hope for me afterall.
Looking forward to playing a duet with her without me making a mess. Thank you Amanda!

Amanda is an outstanding teacher. She inspires and challenges me to play pieces I did not think I could play. She is able to take difficult passages and break them down step my step so I can learn how to play them properly. I am sure I would not be playing as I am now, if it weren’t for Amanda’s skilled teaching. She is also friendly, makes the lessons interesting and fun and is very professional. I have taken lessons both in person and on Skype and she excels in both modes.

Matt Stubbs is the most uniquely talented young individual on clarinet, and one of the most creative+technically facilitated improvisors of his generation. He has a deep understanding of the woodwind family as he doubles on all the saxes as well as bass clarinet. He is extremely knowledgeable in woodwind technique, improvisation, composition, and arranging. The dedication he shows towards the craft is impressive in and of itself. Whether you are a beginner, an intermediate, or an advanced student, you will quickly discover that he has more to offer than you could ever imagine. I highly recommend taking his lessons. Plus, he just has an amazing personality and a great sense of humor!

Max is a fantastic teacher! He taught my 12-year old son James how to play saxophone from the very beginning. James had never played the sax before and after his first lesson he could already play a song. Max is passionate and inspires and motivates his students, and his lessons are well planned out. Besides being a great teacher, he is also an amazing saxophone player! I now also have my younger daughter learn to play clarinet with Max, and she also loves her lessons.

Music Lessons:
After completing my undergraduate education at Santa Clara University, where I majored in flute and vocal performance, I freelanced as a music professional in the San Francisco Bay Area for three years. I then relocated to the University of Notre Dame, where I received a Master of Sacred Music degree in voice and directed a children's choir in the Notre Dame Children's Choir. I also taught percussion and competed as a marching percussionist for six years, winning the
award of "Best Percussionist" with the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets and leading my groups to successful competitions during the fall marching season and the winter indoor percussion season. I'm currently a freelancing vocal professional in Baltimore.

At San Francisco State University I earned my M.A. degree in English Composition, a degree which focuses on the teaching of college-level reading and writing. There I served as a tutor for the English Tutoring Center and the Student Success Program.
