I am a Florida native, active doctoral student, teacher and practitioner. My career includes performing and recording as a guitarist and teaching subjects such as music or math. Grade-school academic strengths in mathematics represent my enthusiasm for the subject. The math equivalent in music can be considered music theory, which is another passion of mine. I hope to take these well-rounded characteristics to teach and influence others with what I have learned in my education and career thus far.

I love music and believe in its ability to bring people together. It's been a part of my life since I was 5, practicing piano at home in Michigan.

Music was a big part of every single one of my school years, and I was lucky enough to be able to double major in music and psychology at Kalamazoo College once I graduated from high school.

My passion for music has taken me abroad, to London, where I studied Western & Russian art music and took classes in popular music studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London.

It spurred my move across the country to New York, where I developed a better understanding of how important creativity is to all of us -- especially musicians! -- at Teachers College, Columbia University.

And, most importantly, it's allowed me to do what I love from my home in San Diego, teaching privately both i

*** Online & In-Person Lesson Details ***
It's most important to me that you are excited and motivated about your music lessons! I am a flexible instructor and am always open to hearing your ideas for songs. After working together to identify your beginning knowledge of music and your instrument, we'll progress from song to song to develop your musical abilities.

All of my online and in-person lessons begin by warming up with a quick exercise, scale, or even an improvisational activity. We'll use the music you love to develop your guitar technique, learn new chords, and sharpen your listening skills.

You'll gain an understanding of what makes the music work and why the notes, rhythms, and harmonies are what they are.

The music we study can also serve as inspiration for creativity. I may ask you to come to the next class with a short composition of your own or we'll finish a lesson by improvising together on related musical themes.

I'll do my best to make my expectations for you clear and at the end of every lesson, we'll go over what we accomplished together and make sure you understand what to work on before our next class.

*** Additional Online Information ***

Online lessons can be just as effective as in-person lessons for teaching you the basics of your instrument, developing technique, and achieving your musical goals! I'll use screen sharing to display music, chords, and scale charts during the lessons. Materials will be emailed to you as well for you to use at home. And communication is extra important when it comes to online lessons; because I can't make physical adjustments, I'll often assess how you hold your musical instrument and describe how you can make the adjustments yourself.

Please note that a high-speed internet connection is needed in order to make sure that we can see and hear each other appropriately. In addition, I expect that you will be able to provide your own musical instrument (and amplifier, if you have an electric instrument) to use during the lesson.

*** Additional In-Person Information ***
I teach my in-person lessons from my home office with comfortable seating for both students and parents. I expect that you will be able to provide your own musical instrument to use during the lesson.

I will have music stands available for use during lessons and will accompany and demonstrate on my musical instruments. I will have an amplifier and cables, but if you prefer to bring your own amplifier you can do that, too!

Please note that I have two cats; they'll be in an enclosed room away from where we will have lessons, but if you have cat allergies this may not be a good fit.

I am a South-american violinist and violin-music teacher who loves music, dancing, arts, nature, and animals. I am a social, kind, caring, persevere and self-disciplined person.

I started teaching 9 years ago when I was studying my Bachelor'€™s degree. In my country, I was the teacher of 25 lovely children and youth, with whom I created my own violin studio. It started only with 3 students, and after 7 years we were a wonderful group that performed in different recitals, festivals and trips around our country. Together we learned about violin, classical music, popular music, folk music, singing, etc., but most importantly we learned about sensitivity, sharing, self-discipline, respect, creativity and many other personal skills that music helps us learn in such a joyful way.

In Boston, while doing my masters, I also had the oppo
rtunity to teach two children in English with new methods I was learning in my string pedagogy course. In addition, I have taught adults and elderly (70-72) to play the violin, and find their smiles and learning process more than satisfying. Finally, I was the music teacher in a kinder garden, and had students from 2 to 4 years old. I like to teach people with different ages because I learn from them and their different needs.

I have also had some few students with different abilities such as Down syndrome, Asperger's syndrome and Dwarfism. I cannot say I am an expert but I am open to learn from these students if I have a good orientation and support from the parents and specialists.

Right now, after finishing my Master'€™s degree in Boston, I am living in Chicago because my husband is studying his PhD at Northwestern University. I miss teaching and sharing my love for music with others, that is why I really want to find new students that want to join me in their musical journey.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe every person is talented and can learn music. I think that the best way to learn music and arts is from the experience, where the person can develop not only music and instrumental skills, but also creativity, originality, joy and love for music. These are skills that are needed to enjoy and learn music, but also to be a more sensitive and rounded person. My goal is to build a professional and positive environment where the person can develop his/her musical abilities as well as his/her personal skills. In order to achieve this goal, it it usually better to have the lessons in my own studio instead of the student's house. That way we can work with a complete music environment and the student can benefit 100% from the music experience.

I have learned in the process that regular practice and a consistent schedule encourages not only progress but great motivation. Also, I have found that a experience-based approach helps them keep motivated because the students learn much faster and gain a deeper musical intuition than with a theoretical and approach.

I think it is important to give the students the time to talk and share their thoughts about the music. I like to guide them discovering how their bodies feel more comfortable with the instrument, instead of telling them the "correct form". I like to make them clap, sing, move and feel the music before telling them how to play it. I like to introduce music theory and reading from the beginning encouraging them to use their knowledge about music.

In addition, I have found that following the literature of more traditional methods with scales and etudes, helps the students to develop completely in their instruments, with a great technical foundation. That is why I like to mix experience-based methods such as Suzuki, Kodaly and Dalcroze, with traditional books such as Essential Elements, Wolfhart, Kreutzer, etc.

I usually start with Suzuki, The Blue Book, and some personal material that I create for each student depending on their needs. After a while, I start to introduce some pieces of different parts of the world or different styles while introducing scales and etudes. This way I maintain the student's motivation and give them a broader view of music, while developing important skills for their instrument. Then, when the student is ready, I introduce more difficult pieces and solo repertoire.

For adults, I try to adapt my method to their particular goal in music, giving them both fun and the best level they want to achieve. I give them material that is adequate to their needs and also to their preferences.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have several materials for children and adults. Music cards, music games, toys, puppets, etc.
I also have books to start our journey.However, the student will have to buy his/her own books once we start.
I own one 4/4 violin that could be rented for a tall or adult student. I also own a 3/4 violin for rent.
Smaller violins would have to be rented or bought.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can travel to the student's house with my instrument if it is within my travel limits (5 miles) and if it is accessible via public transportation.

*** Specialties ***
- Suzuki method mixed with some traditional books and world
music.
- Experience with Alexander Technique, Dalcroze, and Kodaly.
These methods deal with music freedom and tension free
techniques.

Hi, my name is Eddie Sundra, and I teach private clarinet and saxophone in the Ann Arbor area. I've been playing clarinet and saxophone for over 15 and 10 years, respectively, and I've been teaching professionally for the past five years. My musical interests generally include classical, jazz, and a slew of other musical genres ranging from ethnic to electronic. I have experience teaching students from beginning through collegiate levels, with a special emphasis on middle and high school students. My goal as a teacher is to help cultivate an enriching and entertaining musical experience with the clarinet and/or saxophone. I hope to cater to the student’s goals as a performer (whether it be achieving perfect scores in solo competitions or simply learning to play a few easy jazz tunes), while offering a wealth of information along the way. Lessons will focus on fundamentals, musical literacy, aural skills, artistic creativity, improvisation, and composition. While I believe that structure in lessons is important for consistent development, I also believe that every student has different needs and interests, therefore each student receives individually-tailored lessons. The material I use is a culmination of both what I've used and personally developed, as well as materials my teachers have used and recommended in pedagogy classes I've taken.

When my son Charles approached me asking to take flute lessons I was skeptical. Our family is not musical and I had no idea where to begin the search for a flute teacher! Fortunately, Katelyn was teaching a friend of Charlie at the time and allowed us to come in and observe the lesson before we jumped in to flute lessons. Her rapport with the students and the bond she works to build with them is amazing. Charlie learned so much more than the flute during his time with Katelyn--she encouraged his creativity in all aspects of his life and helped him build self-confidence during hard times. Charlie is no longer playing the flute but the things he learned with Katelyn continue to help him in his daily life.

Katelyn taught flute to my daughter Elizabeth through all of high school. She began in ninth grade and Katelyn helped her excel in her band program, at solo and ensemble festival, in all-state band and orchestra, and eventually in college auditions. Elizabeth is now a sophomore at Ohio State University where she majors in music education and we don't believe she could have done it without the gentle encouragement and support of Katelyn during her high school years!
