Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to check out my teaching profile!

A bit about me:
I am a working Chicago actress originally from Indianapolis, IN. I graduated from Ball State University with a B.A. in Acting. For three years I lived in Los Angeles pursuing opportunities in film and television. I am a member of SAG/AFTRA and with the help of my agents and manager, I worked on many t.v. shows including Numbers, Commander and Chief and McBride (starring John Larroquette). After realizing how much I missed being on stage, I moved to New York City. I spent two years performing off Broadway before finally landing i
n Chicago to attend graduate school. In 2013, I earned my M.F.A. in Acting from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. Currently, I am the Director of New Works with The Arc Theatre . Additionally, I direct plays for other prominent theatre companies in the city. I am capable of teaching a variety of theatre skills, including classical techniques, performance of literature and speaking voice.

I am extremely laid back and open to trying new things. In a lesson, you can expect to bravely explore the world of acting in a safe, nurturing environment. I believe in the "YES" philosophy- anything is possible and everything is valid in developing a creative life. There are no wrong answers! Just millions of GOOD questions. Acting is DOING and through trial error, anyone with the drive and determination can be a successful performer. I will instill the confidence and skills you need to take the next step in your acting career- whatever that may be!

The warmest teacher around

Natalie helped me with monologues for audition season this year and it's made all the difference! Very helpful

I needed help with projecting and emoting with my voice for a reality TV shoot. Natalie was very helpful in teaching techniques to connect my breath and voice, relax and eliminate tension, and thoroughly warm up. These were very helpful. I went from being anxious on camera to having fun and looking forward to more. Highly recommended!

Hello! After earning my Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Voice from Hunter College in 2011, I have been working successfully as a singer, voice coach, and academic tutor. As a singer, over the past 8 years I have performed at professional theaters across the country, including Off-Broadway and at the world-renown Carnegie Hall. I specialize in musical theatre, but have a thorough classical technique, as well as strong pop/rock/belt training.

My teaching style is highly energetic, and engages the development of the student's self-esteem and enjoyment, but is also focused on a foundational technique and strong work-ethic. I am extraordinarily proud of the accomplishments many of my students have made, from achieving principal parts in their school productions, to even getting cast in Broadway shows. We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

Mia is an absolutely outstanding teacher. I came in for my first lesson horrified to sing, not knowing anything about performing. And in just a few months of learning with Mia I was cast in my first show. Fast forward a few more months and I have been accepted to the college of my choice in their Musical Theater program. In just a year she has helped me achieve my goals that seemed so out of this world to me in the beginning but now are a reality. She is not only amazing at the technical stuff, but she is so genuinely invested in helping you be the best that you can be. She changed my life and I'm so grateful to her.

About Lynn
I have been studying voice and piano and performing on stage in various capacities since I was a small child, acting professionally on stage, in films and TV for most of my adult life. I've been blessed to study with countless music luminaries in varying genres, from jazz and classical to rock n' roll and blues.

I studied music at the university level both at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in NYC. I received my BFA in Jazz Vocal Performance from The New School in 2008. I was given an incredible foundation in ear-training, music theory, composition, arranging and song-writing through these institutions.

My diverse music education and experience means I am able to teach music in many different styles and music of many different genres. I can accompany my students on piano a
nd help them to prepare for auditions. I can teach how to read music, to play classically on the piano, to read jazz charts, or help you figure out parts for a chord progression for a pop or rock song.

My acting training is equally many-faceted and I have an incredibly strong foundation based in the teachings of Sanford Meisner, Stanislavsky, Lee Strasberg and Larry Moss. Lynn is stellar. Her background and training are substantial and impressive. She is prompt, courteous, calm and absolutely wonderful with our daughter (Age 9) who has challenges focusing and staying on task. Lynn is kind, but navigates the lessons confidently, fluidly and with a focused energy. She works with our daughter's playfulness, incorporates humor and positive, encouraging energy into every lesson. Our daughter has shown signs of great improvement with Lynn. Lynn assigns tasks and practicing points each week for our daughter to work on which are balanced and also bring in a component of improvisation, which is SO helpful for kids who have challenges with focusing. Lynn is awesome, highly recommend!

My passion is teaching acting!

My mission is to help actors learn and grow, especially those who weren't given lots of help. I myself had few financial advantages, and little help or encouragement from my family. I am not particularly good looking nor was I not able to attend one of the prestigious universities or acting schools.

However, At the age of 20, I began making my living as an actress and as a singer.I am now a long time member of AEA and SAG/AFTRA.

My success came from hard work, determination, and talent. My drive to work as an actress never included fame, I simply wanted to act anywhere and anytime.
I struggled for many years to find a teacher or a method that would help me develop my talent and finally found one in Michael Shurtleff, author of the book, Audition. I worked with Michael for two years and became
his assistant. He inspired me to become a teacher, and I stopped acting because it no longer was as exciting to me as teaching and directing.

Now I teach workshops all over the country, do lots of skype and facetime coaching, and guest teach at universities. My dream of reaching lots of actors has come true and for that I am grateful.

In July 2017 I attended Jane's Fresh Faces for Film group session and from the moment she began the class I was taken aback by the depth and realism she brings to the art of acting. I knew I had come across an incredibly important person in my life; akin to the handful of teacher's in my youth that left an indelible mark on me. You quickly realize the experience and knowledge that she has established over her long career are immensely engaging and enriching.
