I maintain a home studio in Catonsville and my school-age students have consistently been successful in competitions and auditions. I teach all ages, beginner through adult, and would also be pleased to offer flute ensemble or sectionals as well.

I have over 12 years of professional performing experience. While serving with the U.S. Army Field Band, I participated in numerous educational outreach activities ranging from elementary school presentations introducing younger students to music, high school sectionals and individual lessons, Google Hangouts for distance learning, and college-level master classes for flute students and chamber music groups.

I offer my flute students of all ages and levels inspiring and interesting lessons based on classical repertoire, exercises and studies from from the Western European traditions of mostly the French school of flute playing, but also borrowing from the English and German traditions.

I work with my students to develop and improve tone quality and pitch control. I guide them through Moyse, De La Sonorite, and Trevor Wye's Practice Book 1 on Tone and note bending exercises. While guiding my students through exercises, etudes and pieces, I strive to sharpen their listening skills by drawing their attention to fuzzy tone, faulty pitch, uneven fingers etc. I use tuners and metronomes in my lessons to encourage these skills and to teach my students how to practice to get great results.

About Frances
Originally from Massachusetts, I have been teaching children and adults flute for over 20 years. I teach from the very beginner student to the very advanced and I have additional training in the Suzuki Method which is especially helpful for beginning young children. I am primarily a classical flute teacher with extensive experience playing in various classical music settings.

My approach is friendly and patient. As I get to know my students, I can better guide them to accomplish the goal of learning flute but, in the process, I never lose sight o the person whom I am teaching. It has to be a pleasant experience as well as challenging. I have learned throughout the years when to relax my expectations of perfection and when to intensify them. I am looking for a good attitude in my students. My students come to me trying their best during
the lesson time and also making time in their schedules to practice. Every student is different and has different goals. I consider the differences while I am teaching them. My younger students don't usually know how serious they are about the instrument. For them especially, it has to be fun and interesting. I make every effort to combine my students in small chamber music groups for recitals. Nearly all of my students participate in regular studio recitals with a pianist provided to accompany them.

Our son attended a neighborhood concert and was struck with the idea that he’d like to learn to play the flute. We knew absolutely nothing about flutes at that time, but we consider ourselves so, so fortunate that Frannie came to us by recommendation.

Frannie is fun and has a great sense of humor. She is endlessly patient and relaxed, but also firm when she needs to be. She always keeps the music interesting for him – for example, after a period of working hard on the pieces in the Suzuki Method repertoire, she encourages him to mix it up and play some things just for fun, like the popular themes to Star Wars and Harry Potter.

Our son, now 9, has been studying with Frannie for almost a year now, and I cannot believe how much he has grown and improved in such a short amount of time. Frannie inspires him to play his very best; he works hard to emulate her gorgeous tone. He absolutely loves his weekly lessons, he looks forward to her student recitals, and he is motivated to practice every day.

It is a beautiful thing to watch your child fall in love with making music, and we credit this to Frannie. She has our highest recommendation.

I took lessons with Frannie for more than ten years, starting at age 4 in an introduction to music class at the Brooklyn Music School. Through her I found not just a great love for music but a lens through which I discovered and learned about the world. With Frannie, once a week for nearly my entire childhood, I would learn to practice and work at a piece or phrase, or to interpret and have and opinion on music I played, or to play like I mean every note, and so on endlessly. Those skills were some of the earliest and most important lessons I had about how to live and enjoy my life, and art, and how to work hard, and care about what I do for my own sake and no one else's. And I don't believe just any teacher could have done that for me. Since moving on I have often felt a different excitement and deep understanding of music than many of the peers I met who have spent far more time than me studying music.

I'm still a musician. I graduated recently from Bard College with a degree in music and have since played onstage in a very successful off-broadway musical. I've played in many orchestras including with graduate & conservatory students at Bard, with the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra, and at LaGuardia High School (formerly Music & Art). I have moved on to other instruments, and forms of music, but I credit Frances not just for showing me how much I love music but for teaching me in many ways how to enjoy and get what I want from life. I can't recommend her enough.

My daughter Coco studied with Frances for a number of years. Without question Francis was the best music teacher Coco ever had, and she's had quite a few.
Francis is generous, creative, and inspiring to work with, she has the perfect balance of qualities that a music student needs. She's highly motivating and makes demands of her students which stretch them to achieve their full potential, yet she never pushes past their limits; Coco never felt stressed by her practice but always wanted to fulfill the expectation of excellence which Francis instilled in her. I am interested in teaching you what you need and want to learn so that you achieve your dreams. Please note that I only take serious students who will practice at least 30 minutes every day or 35 a day 6 days a week at home. I would like you to keep a log of how much you practice. This will enable you to make progress through the curriculum as you will be a beginner for the first 3.3 years, an intermediate for the next 3.3 years, and then an advanced student for 3.3 years. I will give you assignments to do over the week, and the next week we will go over them, learn something new and get new assignments. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert!

Dr. Maureen Spranza, is a great music teacher, my son is taking piano classes with her and I'm very grateful with her, because she always take the extra time to make sure my kid is learning, my kid loves Mrs. Maureen because she is a great teacher but also she is a great human being, she really cares about her students. And she not only plays the piano, she plays all the instruments, I hope to see my son become a great musician thanks to the dedication that Maureen puts in his classes, my kid loves his piano classes, every time after clases he came home very exited to practice what he learned and al of this if because Dr. Maureen encourage him to be better in Avery class

Dr. Spranza is one of the best piano teachers in the Bay Area. My two daughters take weekly lessons with her. She encourages them and empowers them to do their best. She teaches them both theory and practicals. They have participated in an informal recital and are now registered to take part in the MTAC Certificate of Merit program.

As parents, we see a big improvement in our daughters' piano playing skills. They even practice on their own, without us telling them to. All thanks to Dr. Spranza.

Stephen has been my son's sax teacher for a year. I was reluctant to look for a teacher online, but was frustrated and unsuccessful in finding one through traditional methods. Stephen far exceeded my expectations. Stephen enhanced and furthered my son's musical education, tailoring lessons and including the music my son was eager to learn. The music director at school asked where my son was taking lessons because she could hear the difference when he played, saying that his individual practice time at school was focused and directed in a meaningful way.

Stephen also guided my son through the college audition process, providing targeted feedback on everything from music selections to proper preparation, while offering realistic insight into the process. Stephen has been a fantastic influence and I am most grateful.

I have had such an excellent experience with my saxophone teacher, Stephen. He is extremely patient, always encouraging and is very easy to work with.
Stephen has made may alterations to his teaching style to accommodate my visual impairment, enabling me to continually learn music in a most rewarding fashion.
I am learning how to read music, play by ear and practice songs of my choosing as well as standard practice lessons.

I am grateful to have such a professional, patient and understanding teacher who is excited about music and teaching it.

I have to recommend taking lessons with him as a beginner and as an advanced skilled individual looking to brush up on your skills

I have been teaching flute for ten years, and my students regularly hold principal or first chair in their school ensembles. I also have had students participate in local youth orchestras, as well as All-County. In the first few lessons, we will go over the basics of flute playing, always making sure you are having fun. As we advance, we will have scales, an etude, and a duet to play each week (as well as a solo piece for advanced players).

Sarah comes from a musical family and is from Baltimore, Maryland. Sarah earned her Master’s Degree from Ohio University in 2016 where she was a concerto competition finalist that year. While at OU, Sarah held positions as the Flute graduate assistant and as a band graduate assistant. She also attended James Madison University, where she graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance.

Sarah has ten years teaching experience, holding an active private studio with students ranging from seven to seventy. Sarah's students regularly hold principal positions in their school ensembles, and her students have been selected to perform as members of the Baltimore Symphony Side by Side Orchestra, All County Band and Orchestra, and Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra. Sarah believes the most important part of playing flute is to

My lessons include working through exercise aimed at improving mastery of the flute. Daily technical exercises like scales, arpeggios and thirds/sixths and tone exercises are introduced depending on the level of the student (Marcel Moyse: De La Sonorite is a required book for students at the advanced level for example). Other focuses of the lessons include work on solo, chamber, and orchestra literature as well as other music that interests the student and/or parent.

Michele Walton is a freelance musicians in the DC area where she is working on her DMA in Orchestral Instruments in Flute at Catholic University of America where she studies with Alice Weinreb. As a teacher, she has taught kids through adults over the last six years.

As a musician, Michele has experience in both chamber, orchestra, and band ensembles. Currently she performs with the Catholic University Orchestra. She has served as principal flutist and section leader of the Houghton College Philharmonia and has performed with the Houghton College Symphonic Winds.

I hired Paul last November to help my daughter, Kara, with her middle school NYSSMA audition. Paul assessed my daughter, asking her to play a song she already knew and took notes on what she was already good at and what to improve on. When Paul taught Kara her NYSSMA solo, he was very meticulous, paid much attention to Kara's playing, and taught her techniques on how to correct certain mistakes and methods on how to improve what was already good to make her stick out. On the date of her NYSSMA audition, she was very confident, got a perfect score, and made it into the All-County Band :).
I could not recommend Paul more. His experience and methods of teaching technique especially caught my eye, and is what differentiates him from other instructors. He is very patient, kind, honest, and sits down with you to set realistic expectations and goals and how to achieve them. I still book him today for my daughter who is now in High School and has even made All-State Bands because of Paul. He may be in college, but he has music wisdom way beyond his years!!

I am a passionate musician and educator. I have worked for many years as a private flute instructor on both the modern and baroque flute, gaining experience teaching many age and skill levels. Lessons are tailored to the individual needs and goals of the student, with an emphasis on developing tone, technique, and breathing skills. Students will also be encouraged to think about the music that they play. As a musician, I developed an interest in the field of Historical Performance over the course of my undergraduate degree. In this field, one not only studies the music of past periods, but studies its relevance to the social, political, and cultural circumstances of its time. I believe this puts me in a unique position as a music educator, as I understand the importance of teaching students to connect musical works to their historical contexts. I am a flutist and music teacher new to the state of Illinois. I received a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance and Music Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2012 and a Master of Music in Flute Performance in 2015. I have experience performing in orchestras, wind ensembles, wind quintets, as well as solo music. I have appeared as a concerto soloist with the Oberlin Baroque Orchestra and the Five College Early Music Program’s Euridice Baroque Orchestra, and I have attended the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin College. My numerous years of experience as a performer and education background inform my philosophy as a music teacher.

I recently finished a second Master’s Degree in Historical Performance as a recipient of the Conservatory Dean Scholarship from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. There I learned t
o play many types of flutes, including the Renaissance flute, Baroque flute, Classical flute, and recorder. I am interested in the history of the flute, and learning to play new instruments is always an exciting challenge. I encourage my students to develop their physical skills as musicians, and also explore their own passions. Though my recent area of study has been historical music, I also have significant experience in more recent music as well.

David Le is a professional flutist based in Baltimore, Maryland, where he leads a diverse career as a recitalist, chamber musician, and educator. Nationally recognized throughout the United States, he won First Prize in the Florida Flute Association College Young Artist Competition, Hampton Roads Flute Faire Young Artist Competition, and has been a prizewinner of competitions sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association, National Flute Association, and the Tampa Bay Symphony. David is also a grantee of the Friends of Flutes Foundation, as well a past winner of the National Flute Association's Frances Blaisdell Memorial Scholarship.

A dedicated teacher, David has been invited to present guest master classes and lectures at public school music programs, summer music institutes, universities, and music education conferences. Studen
ts of his private studio continue to win regional and national competitions; alumni are pursuing degrees at universities throughout the United States. While living in Baltimore, he has coached ensembles at the Peabody Preparatory and served on the flute faculty of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids program, bringing musical instruction to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

David has performed with the Florida Lyric Opera, Experiential Orchestra, Hunt Valley Symphony, and Occasional Symphony. In addition, he was selected to attend the Marrowstone Music Festival for two seasons, performing with the Festival Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. David has performed under the batons of luminaries such as Marin Alsop, Edward Polochick, Leonard Slatkin, and Gene Young. He can be heard as soloist on the McCormick Percussion Group's album Plot: Music for Unspecified Instrumentation (Ravello Records) and Principal Flute on the USF Wind Ensemble's album Live at Carnegie Hall...and more (Mark Records). He is also Principal Flute on the Peabody Symphony Orchestra's forthcoming album, featuring the works of Aaron Jay Kernis conducted by Marin Alsop, to be released by the Naxos label in late 2017.

David recently earned a Master of Music degree from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he was awarded a full scholarship and the Clinton Lee Arrowood Memorial Prize in Flute. A native Floridian, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Florida, where he was named a Presser Foundation Scholar and Distinguished Graduate in The Arts.
