I've been a professional music recording engineer for over 30 years, and run my own recording business, RHL Audio, in northern Virginia. I've been teaching audio recording for over 30 years as well. I prefer to conduct lessons at a student's home or studio so I can teach them how to operate their OWN gear to make better recordings. Lessons consist of whatever the student wants to learn. The student designs the curriculum - ranging from studio design and acoustics, DAW recording, editing and mixing, microphone selection and technique, signal flow, plug-ins and effects, and everybody's favorite - "WHAT GEAR SHOULD I BUY NEXT?"

About Chris

I've been a professional audio engineer for over 40 years, worked in studios for over 30 years, and have been teaching recording techniques since 1987. I still do several recording sessions every week, so I'm very active in the business. For my private lessons, I ask each student, "What do YOU want

About Valyncia

I believe everyone has the ability to sing … some better than others, of course, -- but regardless, I believe every voice can make a beautiful sound. I believe learning to sing requires team work: with the proper instruction and learning tools from me, the instructor, and with the dedication (pra

My lesson went extreemly well. The instructions and exercises were appropriate to my level of experience, and I think this is exactly what I need to move forward as rappidly as possible to becone a good vocalist.

Ms. Valyncia was an amazing coach. She was very patient , very honest and very professional. She pushed me beyond my comfort zone and I was able to improve my breathing, improve my range and put some personality into my performance. That was a long time ago but I plan on booking her again as my coach. I highly recommend her ! You will definitely become a better singer / performer when working with her , as long as you put the work in.

I met Robby in college and he was a really good guitar player. I wanted to learn from him as much as I could. He actually took the time to set me up with lessons and gave me very specific stuff to practice. He would check in with me every couple weeks and see if I had any questions and how I was doing. I moved and had to stop lessons for a year or two. A few years later I called him and asked to get together for a couple lessons. He was blown away at how much I improved and was so genuinely happy for me. We still talk every week and if I ever have a guitar question I call him. He's my friend, and he's gonna be a famous guitar player some day.

I started learning from Rob 5 years ago. I didn't think he'd want to spend time teaching me because I didn't know anything about guitar and he was so good. I was so wrong! Since our first lesson, he treated me like a friend, and 5 years later and we are great friends. I started off being able to play a couple notes, and now I can pay solos and songs and learn just about anything I want! Thanks Rob! Take Lessons from this guy! He's the Best!

My brother told me he found this great guitar teacher, and I was skeptical because he has been playing guitar for a long time and has never really sounded good. Two weeks after he mentioned him, all of the sudden he didn't suck any more. He was actually kinda good. So I tried a lesson with him and Wow! Within my first lesson I was already able to play a song! I can't afford lessons since I'm in school right now, but my brother still takes lessons with him. Even though I no longer take lessons with him I still call Rob and ask him questions about guitar all of the time, and he always makes time for me. I don't know where my brother or I would be without him. Great Teacher. Great Friend.

Some people have a desire to get into the music industry as recording engineer, but have no idea how to get started. Others are musicians that simply want to capture a performance of their music so others can listen to it in their cars or on when they exercise. Music recording is super cool! You learn how to take a picture of music that can be enjoyed by everyone. When you take lessons in music recording, we cover everything: computer hardware requirements, the pros and cons of different software, microphones, interfaces, mic placement, and tons of other stuff. Music recording can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be, but with whatever level you want it to be, I'm going to make sure you have fun doing it!

CHRIS was awesome!!! My first lesson was with a guitar that I’d had for years, he fixed the guitar so that I would have something to practice on, whilst he fixed the guitar he didn’t forget why he was there and went over notes and chords etc, After fixing my guitar we had time to go over the gchord and I pretty much had it as he was walking out the door. I’m very pleased!!!

I had a good time with Scott as my coach and first time playing on a drum set! I hope to continue more lessons and maybe do some studio work later.
He showed me basic techniques that I could understand and practice with music. I am happy that I met him.

Scott is amazing! He helped teach me the basics of Ableton, over Skype. I was coming from Logic and needed a quick course. I learned how to have a faster workflow and tons of cool shortcuts! Also he is a very chill guy and easy to get along with. I highly recommend Scott if your looking to take your music production, and mixing/mastering skills to the next level.

"This spring semester started off very stressful, but after getting James to tutor me for my music business class it have been a big relief. My grades started going back up and the biggest accomplishment of them all is that I passed my class with a B+. “Thank god out of all the teachers on takelessons.com I chose him.”

James is very caring and understanding and most definitely knows his stuff when it comes to Music business. He really cares about his student’s and really wants to see them win , even when he’s not on the clock with you at the moment he randomly sends you helpful tips and interesting reading files that can help you along the way to become a success artist. I will most definitely keep him around while I'm on my Musical Journey ! and If I were you I would too."

David quickly discovered what I do know what I desired and need to learn. He has helped me to make tremendous progress in just the three lessons. I look forward to each session. He has been able to make some very complex information simple and interesting. He proceeds at my pace and never complains when I need even the simplest things explained. I was so lucky to find him!"

As a student/client of over 15 years, I have experienced the instructor to always be exceptional. He listens to his clients/students and works to ensure that their needs are being met and that they are satisfied with the services they receive.
Distance isn't a barrier and never has been one! Kenneth has been able to accommodate my recording and instructional needs while I've traveled all over the country! Having a dependable instructor/service provider has been the key to our long standing business relationship and I would recommend Kenneth to anyone needing the awesome services his company provides."

"Jordan is one of the most dedicated musicians I know. He has taught me so much about different techniques for recording music and continually searches for new knowledge on how to improve his craft. I would highly recommend learning from Jordan even if you have a background in music because he has brought a new level of professionalism to the way that I approach music theory and song writing. In addition to his skills, he's an all around nice guy and a good communicator!"

"Andrea is a great musician. But a great musician doesn't make a great teacher. He's both. Really.
He is a wonderful producer. So, if you are interested not just in learning guitar, but in recording too, he is able to make your sound shine, and teach you how to do it.
I play both piano and guitar, and he helped me a lot to understand the mechanism inside those instruments with theory and musical touch."

5 Ways Microphones Have Changed the Music Industry

If you've ever stepped on stage to perform, you may not have thought much about the microphone you're about to use. But its history is actually pretty interesting, as music recording equipment has developed drastically since the first condenser microphone came on the market. These changes have made a big impact on the music industry as a whole, and, for better or worse, are here to stay.
