I've been teaching piano for over 13 years. I use Alfred's Premier Piano Courses levels 1 - 6 for children. For adults I use Alfred's Lesson Book 1 - 3. My teaching goals for all my students are to enable them to read and make music so that they could experience the joy of journeying in the realm of musical sounds.
My philosophy in teaching piano is very much like learning to drive a car. Once a person learns the mechanism of driving so many possibilities open for the person to enjoy trips to many places that bring pleasures that destiny could offer. In some ways, playing the piano is very much like learning to drive a car. Once the mechanism of making music is mastered, the possibilities of making journeys of musical sound is endless.

About Heather
Hi, I'm Heather. I’m from a small town in Harford County, MD, called Abingdon. It’s really close to Baltimore, MD which is about 15 minutes away from Abingdon. I live with my husband and two bunnies. I’m an R.N. with a bachelors degree in Nursing and 16 years of training in music by masters of Curtis Institute, Julliard, and Peabody Conservatory. I have been teaching piano for over 12 years. In 2001, I had a diversion of career from nursing and I absolutely fell in love with the idea of teaching piano and I started giving piano lessons. I love playing my Masan & Hamlin grand piano for personal pleasure, and I spend a lot of time practicing for different occasions. I h’ve played in over twenty piano recitals, and for numerous other occasions such as in Weddings , Funerals and in Choir accompaniments.
On a different not
e, did you know that children who study a musical instrument learn responsibility and discipline, they gain pride in their accomplishments which in turn makes them confident, they learn to think in a logical manner, and they will perform better in school. These are just a few of the benefits children could gain through music lessons

My Specialties: My passion is classical music, however, I realize that the students'€™ interests are diverse, so, I teach pieces they request which include easy fun Pop Music, Hymns, Boogie, Rock, Country and other contemporary pieces.
My Education: At an early age, I took a great interest in music, so my older sister who is four years older than I taught me what she learned in her piano lessons. She also taught me music theory. At the age of 12-14 my parents sent me to private piano lessons. My piano teacher at that time eventually told me that I needed to find a new teacher because she had taught me all she knew. After that, I approached a well known Julliard Master in town. He took me on as a student after he heard me play the Beethoven'€™s Pathetique Sonata in C minor. I learned through Arthur Fiddler'€™s comment made in the newspaper that Mr. Chang, my teacher, in his opinion was the best piano teacher in Hawaii. Under Mr. Chang’s tutelage, I was exposed to a variety of classical pieces written by famous composers of the 15th to 18th centuries. At the age of 14, I made my first piano recital debut. My piano teacher was impressed with my talent and expressed his wish for me to pursue music and enter into Julliard. But, my parents being immigrants from Korea, did not think it was a good choice of career. So, I went into nursing instead, much to the consternation of my piano teacher. In 2001, I made a career change and found my passion for music revived again. I started teaching piano as well as taking Music Theory courses at a community college and taking lessons from a Julliard- Peabody master as well lessons from a Curtis Institute master. I continue taking piano lesson even now while I give piano lessons to beginner and intermediate students.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my piano studio, besides just learning to actually play the piano, students will engage in flashcard drills, writing work, and other activities to strengthen their overall knowledge of music. This will prepare them well for continued study in piano, for playing other instruments or singing, and for enjoying music in general. As an incentive to practice, our studio awards each week piano dollars for the time each student practices during the week. At the end of the year, we have an auction that the children could participate in using their piano dollars to purchase items.

In first the lesson the concepts stressed include:
1. Hand position and posture at the piano.
2. Right hand , left hand, and how the fingers are numbered.
3. Direction on the keyboard
4. The pattern of keys on the key board

In the first year of piano study, the concepts covered are:
1. Theory: identify steps, skips, and repeats; write and recognize 2nd -5ths intervals; sharp and flat signs; identify key signatures
2. Rhythms: whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and dotted notes.
3. Technique: correct hand position; curved fingers, down –up wrist for phrasing, legato/staccato touch, penta scales; major chords and voicing (balance of hands) 5-finger melodies; single line melodies divided between hands; note-against-note playing, some melody/chord playing.
4. Repertoire: A Dozen A Day by Edna-Mae Burmae Books; Five-finger melodies by Faber Faber; Famous & Fun Pop Books by Carol Matz ; Boogie, Rock & Country Level 1 by James Bastien; Alfred’s Basic Adult Piano Course Lesson Book Level One for adult beginners.

In addition to lessons each student is required to participate in an annual piano recital to give them experience and confidence in performance.

Performance lessons focus on confidence, cues, and various styles in the music culture. The importance of audience connection and performance objective are taught as well.

About Loretta
I have always been fascinated with how music is created and who works behind the scenes of performances and recordings. I started playing the flute in elementary school, piano in junior high school, and singing in high school. Once I got to UMASS, Dartmouth I chose the Music option for my major. I then moved on to NYU. I have been teaching for over ten years now. Working with students both in person and online has been amazing. With online lessons I am able to work with students who love the convenience of being at home and in person I can show students what it is like to really grow! I love my students of all ages, and can only hope to show others how amazing music can be. I have worked with a handful of students with special needs and am comfortable teaching in a non-traditional style. I am currently preparing to complete my certificat
ion in music therapy. Those who can do teach, and those who can teach totally do!

I can't wait to meet you!

My home studio is in a private music room. Parents can relax in our family space with coffee or tea and enjoy their children's learning at their leisure. I carry books for the lessons themselves (not for practice at home), and we can download or print out music as desired. If you take lessons online, I can email you links and sheet music as needed. Being able to perform in public is just as important as being able to sing. Whether it's for opera, art song, musical theatre, pop, or R&B, I help develop special skills that make public performing less daunting.

About Belinda
*** Lesson Details ***
NOTE: I prefer to teach students ages 11 & up.  I will accommodate younger students, but as vocal development is a direct reflection of physical development (the instrument is the body), we will be unable to delve deeply into technique.  Instead, the curriculum for younger students will include musicianship and piano skills; they will be more of music lessons that incorporate singing rather than "vocal" lessons.  My current studio consists of all sorts of singers including classical, musical theater, R&B, and pop.  In classical voice lessons, we will be learning songs not only in English, but also Italian, German, and French. Classical voice lessons may not be for everyone, however, and we will learn repertoire that suits the interests of each student.

I emphasize a basic knowledge of music theory, because it
's important for a singer to not only know how to sing, but to also understand the music he or she is singing. I will incorporate music theory into the lessons, starting with basics such as learning how to read notes.

I believe in making sure the singer is comfortable and confident.  The environment you will be learning in is open and non-threatening because a singer needs a place to explore his or her voice.  I encourage my students to make mistakes and to keep the lines of communication as open as possible.  Singers are perfectionists, and we're constantly telling ourselves what we do wrong- we don't need someone else enforcing that negativity.

I concentrate on a classical vocal technique, with proper posture, efficient breathing, lack of facial and body tension, and healthy vocal production. I believe that it is important to have a strong foundation of healthy technique no matter what style of singing. My teaching style and lesson focus will be different for each individual person, and I'm very flexible in adapting to each singer's needs and personality.

I am a very understanding teacher, and very patient, but I will push you to work to your potential! What you put into these lessons and your practicing is what you will get out of it. I am not strict, but I do expect dedication, passion, and respect. I am a very enthusiastic and energetic teacher, and lessons with me will be fun, productive, and encouraging.

If I sound like the right teacher for you, please arrange a trial lesson to see how well we work together!

I have been working with Belinda for a little over 2 years. Every lesson, she challenges me to be better than before. What I love most about her style, is she customizes her style of teaching for the student. I am a very imagery oriented person, and she always helps me to visualize things in ways that makes sense to me. My singing has dramatically improved during my time with Belinda, and I would recommend her to anyone in a heart beat. Every lesson is different, every lesson is challenging in a new way, and every time I walk away feeling like that was the best lesson I've ever had. Thank you Belinda!!

About Chelsea
Lesson Details:
As a teacher, I've had experience teaching both young children and adults in many settings, whether it be in a classroom, small group lesson, or one-on one. I pride myself on providing lessons that are uniquely individual and foster a students strengths while also building on their weaknesses. The best part about being a music educator is that I get to share my love of music with all of my students. With that said, whether you are a beginner who's interest has been sparked, or you have aspirations of becoming a professional musician I can help you there!

Lessons are catered to each individual student and are conducted in a supportive environment where students are encouraged to take risks, try new things, make mistakes, and most importantly be themselves.

I value the time I have with my students and expect each st
udent to come prepared to each lesson with an open mind and willingness to work. With music, the best results only come to those who put in 100% both during lessons and during individual practice time. This is key in any musical pursuit. Overall, I want lessons to be enjoyable while still maintaining a sense of progress for the student.

About Chelsea:
Soprano, Chelsea B. made her operatic debut in 2005 in Italy with Operafestival di Roma in their main stage production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. Chelsea has been teaching my 14 year old grandson now for over 2 years. She is actually "gets him" where many teachers don't and she manages to bring the absolutely best out in him. She clearly loves her work and it shows so much so that after many years of playing the piano, more off than on recently, I decided to take lessons with her too. I could not be more pleased with the outcome.

Chelsea is not only a phenomenal voice teacher, she is a phenomenal person! Chelsea gave lessons to my daughter for many years and was just as focused with her improving her skills (which she did and even led my daughter getting a vocal scholarship!) as she was on my daughter's overall balance and well-being. We love Chelsea!!

Under Chelsea's guidance, my daughter was accepted into a county honors chorus and accepted subsequently into her advanced high school ensembles. Chelsea understands the busy lives of middle & high school students and is very flexible with scheduling. This summer, she has already started working with my daughter on choral pieces for the upcoming school year. I recommend her highly and we look forward to working with her in the years to come.

I have been performing in musical ensembles and as a soloist for four decades. I can coach you to improve your performance habits and become a more effective (and less nervous) live performance musician. I currently perform with a professional contemporary a cappella group

About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

Music Performance is an often overlooked aspect of music. I can teach stage presence, communication, and how to be the most effective musician you can be!

About Sean
Hi! I'm Sean. I love music and one of my goals in life is to share my love of music with everyone else, in a number of different ways. I am an active freelance composer, guitarist, and teacher in Baltimore City, and I'm currently seeking an MM in Composition at Peabody. I play a wide range of styles - fingerstyle, classical, rock, jazz, metal, and just about everything in between!

I strive to have all of my students become balanced musicians. If reading or theory is a soft spot, we'll apply your strengths and catch up quickly. I also think that being interested in the music that you're playing is incredibly important when learning an instrument. I try to incorporate your favorite styles of music to learn techniques that will benefit you to not only become what you want to be as a musician, but have the skill to do or play whatever you
want if your preferences change. As far as music teachers go, I'd like to think of myself as pretty laid back. I understand that most people have lives outside of music, so we'll go at a pace that is most comfortable for you.

*** Lesson Details ***
I combine the styles of music that you prefer with some kind of method book for reading and theory. No purchasing of music is required. Normal lessons start with the previously assigned material, determining what we need to work on, new material, and ending with things to do at home.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Ample guitars, amps, chairs, and music stands

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a music stand, tuner, metronome, and amplifier if necessary

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical methods - sight-reading, theory, and performance play an integral role in music.

Great first lesson. High hopes for follow lessons.

I self-taught myself guitar over 35 years ago; mostly forgotten. Sean began with establishing goals that would meet my goals. The feedback to me during the lessons was focused and delivered in a friendly manner. Progression was enhanced due to his manner and his approach to teaching. While this was the first lesson, I am looking forward to future lessons.

I'm a firm believer in having fun while training. This is very important! Along with fun, we must also be able to work hard at perfecting our craft. I always tell my students that this is a time to work hard, study and learn as much as possible so that when opportunity knocks, you are ready to answer. 😊

About Detrece
DeTrece "Dee" Lavender is a native of Miami, Florida. When her family moved to Sarasota, she was afforded the opportunity to study music and the performing arts as a student of the Westcoast School/Henry L. Porter School of Music. It was then that Dee began to understand the power of the creative arts as an effective form of emotional expression and release. By middle school, DeTrece began fine tuning her natural talents by studying classical voice which earned her several starring roles in the Sarasota Youth Opera, The Aslo Theater and the Players Theater. She is also a proud former member of the Westcoast Black Theater Troop in Sarasota, FL. Under the caring leadership of these opportunities, she was able to combine musical and life experiences in order to offer a more well rounded educational and musical experience for her students.

She was awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where she received a dual Bachelor of Music degree in Music Therapy and Vocal Performance (Class of 2003). It was through her service as a music therapist, Millieu (residential) counselor and music teacher in the Boston City Public Schools/Greater Boston Metropolitan Area, that she began to feel the call toward a greater understanding of the gravity and role of the socio-emotional needs of students (and their families/villages) in urban settings. This call brought her to Baltimore, MD where she enrolled in the Pastoral Counseling Masters of Science program at Loyola University. In addition to her studies, she currently teaches Elementary and Middle School choir/ Musicianship teacher in the Baltimore City Public Schools through the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids Program. She also serves as Minister Of Music and Arts at two local churches.

I'm an experienced vocal and piano teacher for over 10 years that's looking to work with eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation in what they need to know to be successful.

About Chanel
Hello there! I'm Chanel Narcissus and thank you for your interest in my studio. I have been teaching private lessons and recording music since 2007 and am able to teach lessons at your home, online or at Studio Nar, LLC located in the Towson area.

My education career has afforded me the opportunity to be a graduate of Sheffield Institute of Recording Arts with a concentration in Audio Engineering. I also attended Morgan State University, where I was a double major in the concentrations of Vocal Performance and Classical Piano. Here, I received my Bachelors of Arts degree.

Throughout my career, I have gained in depth knowledge and experience in teaching voice, piano and theory, audition preparation, audio engineering, production and song-writing and I look forward to sharing it with you.

I I’ve been taking piano lessons with Chanel for several months now, both in studio and online (FaceTime). She always goes the extra mile to make sure you understand the material. I’m very pleased with her style of teaching and would highly recommend her to anyone who is interested in learning music.
