I have studied with Wanchi Huang at James Madison University for six years. At JMU, I earned a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music, both in violin performance. I am currently working on a doctoral degree at Catholic University of America, studying with Jody Gatwood. When I was a student at JMU, I taught several students privately. The students ranged from retirees to JMU faculty and students to adolescents. I am now teaching at Baltimore Talent Education Center, where I teach violin in small groups and individual lessons. The students at BTEC range from pre- kindergarden through high school. I also have festival experience. I have been a student at Brevard Music Center, Heifetz International Music Institute, BayView Music Festival, and I was a Teaching Fellow at Interlochen Arts Camp. Through my experiences both as a student
and as a teacher, I understand that every student is a little bit different. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses. Every student has a different learning style. Every student has a different way of understanding things, a different way of processing information, and a different personality all together. It will be my job as a teacher to get to know each student individually and use my teaching methods to teach the student how to play the violin and help him or her to reach his or her goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid-back person. I am easy-going, enthusiastic about violin playing and about teaching and learning music, and I am very patient with my students as well. However, I am also very demanding. I explain and demonstrate objectives in a very precise way, and I demand a lot of detailed work from my students, inside and outside the lesson. I explain specifically what I want the student to do. By the end of every lesson, the student will have specific things to work on for next time. I expect each student to make practicing a habit, and practice regularly what has been discussed in the lesson. I try to make the lessons as pleasant and as laid-back as possible. But I become more firm, serious, and strict when a student either is not making an effort or does not practice enough outside the lesson.
I start students off with the Suzuki method. We work on techniques to hold the violin properly, hold the bow properly, and get a decent sound out of the violin, without too much physical tension. A student begins by learning to play by ear. After he or she is comfortable playing by ear, we associate the notes that the student hears and plays on the violin with written notes on a page.
We also work with the Paul Roland methods so that the student can learn the violin in a basic, rudimentary way. It involves a lot of repetitive patterns, back and forth motions that are slow and round, and avoiding excessive tension. This will give the student the tools that he or she needs to learn how to play the violin in a short period of time.
In three to six months, a student who is a beginner will be able to hold the violin and bow comfortably, create a decent sound on the violin, and play the Twinkle Variations, and maybe a few other songs.
If the student has played violin before, then in three to six months, he or she will have had some rehabilitation to get rid of tension and force, overcome some bad habits he or she may have developed, and review the fundamentals of violin playing. I will improve the student's approach to the violin, and by the end of the three to six months, he or she will have a better idea on how to practice and play the violin.

I will expect the student to have a violin, rosin, and a pencil.

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki Method- a starting point, particularly for kids, but for people of all ages. It is a good way to begin learning the violin by playing by ear, developing a strong, clear tone, and bringing out one's individuality through his/her musical development and his/her ability to be expressive.

In a matter of time, I want the student to get used to reading music, in addition to playing by ear. This can be done through the pieces in the Suzuki method or through other music.

Eventually, I take the student off of the Suzuki method and work with him or her on classical repertoire.

At the conclusion of 5 lessons I learned and grew more than expected from Jonathan. After not having picked up a violin in over 20 years, I am very pleased with his teaching style and attention to proper technique, especially breaking bad playing habits I picked up in adolescence. I will be purchasing more lessons from him soon to continue to grow. I highly recommend him.

Jonathan has been great with attention to teaching proper technique front the beginning before forming bad playing habits. In week 3 I have already felt an extreme difference. I am an active, professional flutist, having earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in flute performance. For the last 20 years I have been very involved in the music community throughout the world having worked with a multitude of orchestras and chamber groups, done recordings, and held solo concerts in Europe, Africa, and the United States. This has enriched my teaching since with my strong background I have a better understanding of the necessary techniques and skills when sharing them with my students.

I teach students of all ages from beginner to advanced. With years of experience I have developed the ability to adjust my lessons for students of different levels and create a learning environment that is fun yet challenging and full of growth. Having played a variety of genres I encourage my students to choose pieces that s
peak to them while also working on developing their techniques through shorter exercises. My goal is to help my students achieve their goals and surprise themselves going way beyond, because I truly believe there is no limit. With practice, determination, and inspiring lessons my students can reach heights they would never have imagined before.

Teaching Methods:
For beginners I usually work with the Rubank methods book as well as songs that students love to play. I often use flashcards to facilitate with site-reading and slowly introduce all the musical symbols. I adapt different techniques to meet the needs of each student. For intermediate and advanced students I prefer using scales, etudes (exercises), sonatas, concertos and solo pieces of their preference. I especially enjoy playing duets with my students, one of their favorite ways of practicing, as it combines our talents in order to create something beautiful. Through regular practice and mentorship I teach my students to become independent and confident performers as they perform solo, as part of a band, or in competitions. There is no greater joy than being able to teach my students and help them better perform and understand the music they are sharing with others. My goal has always been to be a facilitator of my students' journeys to success and to see them fall in love with the flute just like I did at a very young age.

Tools:
During my lessons I often use a tuner and metronome to help students play on tune and keep the tempo if needed. Additionally, I occasionally use a recording device so students can become more aware of their sound and can learn to self-correct. It is also a great way to hear improvement over time.

Klodina was an extremely thorough teacher, who allowed the student some flexibility in choosing songs and exercises to improve student enjoyment. She also encouraged hard work at home so that lessons could demonstrate progress in my flute playing. There was a technical focus (scales, transitions, arpeggios) to make sure that I could go to the sheet music and play it with ease. Klodina was always a friendly, kind, passionate teacher, and I would recommend her to anyone wanting to improve their musical ability.

I am 13 years old. I have taken lessons with Ms. Klodina for a few months now. I learn more with her in an hour than I do all week in band. She has really helped me improve my sound and she is very nice. She is a really good teacher.

Hi my name is Doug, I have been teaching drum lessons since 2014 and love helping my students become better drummers. I have spent 22 years playing drums and have been playing professionally for the last 14 years working as a touring and session drummer.
The reason I got into teaching is because my privet drum instructor inspired me to teach. I was also asked a lot of questions by other drummers on my approach behind the drum set and found that I really enjoyed talking about drumming and the techniques of drumming, and at one point started meeting up with these drummers to show them what I was doing and talked to them about what and who inspired me to play.

I have been taking singing lessons with Madeline for a while now, and I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher! Her personality can make anyone feel welcome. I am very shy but she manages to get me out of my shell. I have definitely felt that my confidence has improved tremendously since I started my lessons. Madeline is also extremely talented, patient, flexible, and helpful. She can very easily explain a concept or a technique by creating an image in your head, which I find immensely useful.

I have recommended her to all my friends that are interested in taking singing lessons and plan on continue to do so, because she really is a great teacher! I am very thankful to her and always look forward to my next lesson 😊

Madeline is sweet and so knowledgeable. She is one of the greatest teachers I have ever worked with. She can help with anything from the basics and fine tuning to the most complicated of pieces. She makes the lessons fun and educational. In only a few weeks I feel I've learned more then I ever did in school music classes.

Rachel started playing guitar and singing when she was 13 when she got a Christmas present from her father who happens to be a musician, also. Learning covers for a few years she eventually started writing her own music around age 16. Now, 31, she teaches beginner guitar classes; holds online concerts as well as live shows; and teaches budding artists how to start their own creative business from home. Her teaching passion came from her love for the experience- having played in bands since 18; recorded a full album when in 2011. Some tracks were salvage but most were lost on an old computer!

Her style is considered Indie Folk, playing a mix of covers and originals. Rachel's recommended if you like Heartless Bastards, Shawn Colvin or Fiona Apple. Her main influences are Radiohead, Gwen Stefani, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Modest Mouse and Dea

Rachel does an amazing job preparing each lessons material and uses a variety of media to make the weeks class easily understandable and accessible. Ours are completed online and I find it easy to learn and enjoy regardless of not being conducted in person. Rachel also finds ways to make the lessons fun and enjoyable through interaction. Highly recommended!

Nathan Raderman has been performing music since he was ten years old. Nathan started as a clarinetist and began doubling on saxophone at age 14. Although Nathan is a Howard County native, he started his musical education at the Walnut Hill School in Natick, Massachusetts. While at the New England Conservatory, Nathan studied with Boston Symphony assistant principal and Boston Pops principal clarinetist Thomas Martin. After returning to Maryland, Nathan performed with the Virginia Symphony and continued his studies with David Jones, principal clarinetist of the National Opera. Nathan performed chamber music throughout the Boston area, and performed with conductor Benjamin Zander in Carnegie Hall. David Le is a professional flutist based in Baltimore, Maryland, where he leads a diverse career as a recitalist, chamber musician, and educator. I began my professional career in the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra after receiving my B.M. in Viola Performance from the Eastman School of Music. I received my M.M. while in Boise, where I also taught a class on music theory and viola lessons.
