I came to the lesson not knowing what is going to happen and a bit apprehensive. Katie made me feel very comfortable. I was able to learn how to use my breathing better in the short 30 minutes we met. I am looking forward to more lessons.

Beginner cello lessons with me are fun and engaging, while you learn the basics of how to play your instrument as an extension of your body. Mindfulness is a key component of my lessons designed to help you learn to play without tension right from the start. You will learn the basics of how to hold the instrument, proper bow hold, finger placement basics, proper wrist position, basic rhythm, as well as, scales, note reading, and music theory. Each lesson is designed developmentally appropriate for the age and physical ability of the student.

About Susan

Music, meditation, and mindfulness have become interchangeable parts of my life that come together in the most beautiful way. Learning to develop the mind impacts the body and how we approach every aspect of our lives. If we approach a skill mindfully whether it is playing an instrument or learning

Cello:
A bowed or plucked string instrument with four strings tuned in perfect fifths. The strings from low to high are generally tuned to C2, G2, D3 and A3, an octave lower than the viola. It is a member of the violin family of musical instruments, which also includes the violin and viola and the double bass. The cello is used as a solo musical instrument, as well as in chamber music ensembles (e.g., string quartet), string orchestras, as a member of the string section of symphony orchestras, and some types of rock bands. It is the second-largest and second lowest (in pitch) bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra, the double bass being the largest and having the lowest (deepest) pitch. My lessons always start out with the basics! We start out by learning notes by plucking the strings and then the bow is soon incorporated. The goal is to eventually learn all the notes on the fretboard and also learning how to read and play chords. As the student progresses ...

This teacher misrepresented her ability to teach the C system chromatic button accordion. I don't believe that she has ever played one. I asked her before purchasing a set of classes if she knew this instrument and was competent to teach it, and she said she was.

She didn't have one, so she could never demonstrate anything I asked about. She didn't know the key layout. She didn't know the conventions for numbering fingers. She didn't know the basic home key scale pattern.

I waited until I'd finished four classes with my new teacher before writing this so I'd have a good basis for comparison. He is immensely better at teaching this than she was. It further convinced me that she never should have represented herself as competent to teach this particular instrument.

Karen is very patient & caring while teaching.

I will definitely be expanding my accordion skills & of music theory . I’ll also be adding some 😎 Jazz Standards to my repertoire ☺️.

I started playing with the Suzuki method at age 5. I have been teaching cello to ages 5 to adult for over 8 years. While not a concert or symphony level player, I have been providing quality lessons and guidance to beginners and intermediate players of all ages and interest for years. As with all of my lessons, I provide a core curriculum as well as customizing to the student's needs and interest. From Bach and other Suzuki classics, to modern favorites like The Beatles or Pirates of the Caribbean.

"I have taken two lessons with Mr. Don Larson through FaceTime. Even though there is a 3-hour time difference, he manages to fit my lesson into his schedule. I have not taken private lessons previously, but I was in school orchestra for over two years. He has been correcting my bow hold and bowing, helping me make my cello produce nicer sounds. I really appreciate his focus on the rudiments. Mr. Don is very patient and funny at times."

What are the Hardest Cello Pieces? How to Get from Beginner to Advanced Player

As a beginner I often told myself I would know I am a really great cellist when I could play Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee at full speed. To my young ears, this simply had to be one of the hardest cello pieces with its high range, chromaticism, and famously fast tempo. As my musical career continued I worked on these and other skills to reach a point I could begin learning the piece confidently, and it was only a matter of time before I achieved my goal. Of course, this wasn’ …

What is a Yamaha Cello? A Detailed Look for Cello Students

Who made your cello? Who carved the body, stained, varnished, and assembled the instrument, including the label visible through the f-hole which bears their signature? Many musicians consider the maker of their instrument, or luthier, a point of pride. There are famous luthiers, like Stradivari and Guarneri, whose names are synonymous with masterpieces of craftsmanship. These masters innovated many of the standards for modern stringed instruments, and so many luthiers might include on the la …

What is the Suzuki Cello Method?

The Suzuki method, founded in 1945 by violinist Shinichi Suzuki as the Talent Education Movement, is one of the most enduring teaching methods, or pedagogies for young string players. Suzuki’s main goal for his music education system was to give students a “noble spirit,” which would instill respect and cooperation through his method. The method was brought to America in the 1960s by John D. Kendall, and today the Suzuki Association of the Americas instructs new teachers and studen …
