I am a professional musician based out of the Washington D.C. area. I am currently a tuba player in The United States Army Band "Pershing's Own."

I believe that having fun, being able to clearly share your musical ideas with others, and being a well-rounded person are an integral to being a musician.

Every student has different goals and desires and I strive to create a specifically tailored course of study with each of my students.

Whether you are just starting out, or are an advanced player, I would be happy to work with you!

About Andrew

Musically and personally, I strongly feel that diversity and openness are key in a person's development: when we move outside of our comfort zone and embrace the unknown, we are better able to grow as musicians (and human beings). Great Experience

From the first lesson, Andrew has been a consummate professional. Each lesson he brings in something new, while making sure that everything we've covered in the past is still ingrained through repetition. Having Andrew as an instructor has opened my eyes to the many facets of drumming, and I have taken skills/techniques with me that will last forever. The feedback does not stop after each lesson, Andrew is available all the time for any questions I may have during the week if I am stumped while practicing. His schedule is flexible with mine, and he is willing to bring in music that I want to personally learn. The lessons are the right balance of fun and teaching, and his studio promotes a learning environment that is not intimidating to let loose if you're a beginner like me.

I'd recommend Andrew to anyone looking to expand their skill set, the lessons have been a great experience.

Dennis is a fabulous teacher! I took lessons for 2 (?) years from him in high school, entering with decent knowledge of music from other instruments but only beginner-intermediate guitar skills from self-teaching and guitar class in school (what a joke). From the very start he adjusted to my level, asking me to play something I knew and identifying the chords that I had (unknowingly) played, and creating an exercise for me to practice new chords at home. Lessons were nothing but fun and informative; Dennis is a great conversationalist and incredibly knowledgeable about music theory. His lessons are full of variety: scales (different positions and modes), progressions (written on the spot by Dennis), improvisation (with live accompaniment), transcriptions (of your favorite songs), and learning from the book. Looking back, I progressed immensely under Dennis’s tutelage, from barely playing barre chords to writing my own music in different modes! It certainly doesn’t hurt that Dennis treats his students as equals, and that his home is always welcoming. He’s invested, not the type of teacher to chase you off once your “time’s up.” If I hadn’t gone off to college, I’d still be taking lessons from him for sure! Highly recommend to anyone who is looking for enjoyable, enriching guitar lessons.

Dennis has a great comprehensive approach to teaching guitar. He helps you understand the nuances of the instrument, and provides specific instruction based on your individual needs. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge, and shares anecdotes about those experiences to help better understand topics relevant to your own personal pursuit of improved playing.

Even if you aren't sure exactly what you want to get out of lessons, Dennis is quick to provide material that will help you improve your skills. They are laid out in a clear way and act as a great resource to add to your collection of practice material.

I'm happy I took lessons with Dennis, and others should definitely work with him if looking for a laid back atmosphere and a steady pace of improvement and understanding.
Mike
Dennis was my instructor and is a bit modest about his experience. He taught me on my mom's crappy nylon stringed spanish acoustic guitar back in the 80s. I hope he reads this and remembers the little studios at Fox's Music in Falls Church. He patiently taught me Rick Springfield songs, probably against his taste and better judgment. Anyway, he got me started in my teens and I'm still playing some of the tunes he taught me (plus a few hundred others) on a slightly nicer guitar these days, in my 40s. Keep rockin', Dennis, and thanks for helping spark a hobby I still enjoy decades later!

Even before my time at Berklee, I spent years striving to put myself into every musical situation possible. This gave me a multi-perspective understanding that allows me to comfortably advise students of all ages and backgrounds regarding several different instruments, styles, and theoretical concepts.

My favorite part about teaching, regardless of discipline, is the fact that it allows me to keep growing and learning while sharing my experiences to help others do the same. So whether you want to work on jazz, pop, or classical, feel free to reach out, and I will happily customize and create the learning environment that you desire!

About Ryan

I am new to TakeLessons! I am a professional pianist, vibraphonist, and percussionist. I recently graduated from Berklee, where I spent much of my time composing, arranging, and performing. I specialize in Jazz, but also frequently help people learn the arts of classical and pop music. Whether

Highly recommend Ryan!

He will take it whatever speed you like and will teach whatever you need. I have learned new things about music theory as well and he makes learning the piano interesting and engaging.

Ryan is awesome! I am a beginner, and Ryan has been so helpful teaching me the basics of notes, key signatures, rhythm, and many other components of piano and music, and we’ve even delved into some music theory. He makes learning fun and easy, and is also flexible with meeting times and can even do lessons over facetime if you can’t make it to his place. He is so talented and welcoming and will make you love piano even more than you already do.
Justin
I took jazz piano lessons with Ryan and he was a great teacher! He drilled a number of fundamentals such as jazz theory, ear training, and improvising which really helped demystify jazz piano for me. Not only does he have a wealth of musical ability, he is also a very kind and patient teacher. I highly recommend taking lessons with Ryan!

"My son has been taking lessons from Remi for more than a year now. Remi is consistently challenging him to improve while encouraging him to love music. Remi is a wonderful instructor with both an eye and ear for detail. He can spot the way you are holding a guitar poorly and hear when you're not putting enough pressure on the strings. If you prefer using a pick, Remi has a better way to use that also, but he honestly makes a pick look more like a crutch that should be avoided when possible - this is good in my opinion. He is definitely blessed with the talents of music as well as teaching. One of our most favorite parts of each lesson is when Remi says, "Ok, now it's time to play whatever you want." - this is toward then end of the lesson, of course, just to have a little more fun after the formal part of the lesson is complete. Remi is also very patient and kind, and he loves to have fun with the music. Personally, I think a good "catch phrase" for him is as follows: "Your Remedy is Mr. Remi." I highly recommend him."

Most important of all, she always remind my son the right habit of the way to play violin at the beginning which I think is very important for beginners! She has a lot of patience and encouraged my son a lot! I highly recommend Annie for both young kids and adult students."

"Randy is an amazing music teacher! I have worked in the music industry for some pretty big names as a record producer and songwriter. But I have always wanted to become a live musician. Randy is showing me how to become a true professional Musician. He teaches in a way that is clear and easy to understand. He is very well organized and creates a plan for me each lesson and sends it to me. This really has helped me to stay on track and focused until our next lesson. Randy has not only taught me how to play piano and sing much better than I ever thought I could, but he has also helped me to realize...WHY I play music. Discovering why I create music has been Powerful to my musical growth! Thanks Randy for the pathway of learning you have showed me!

Preparing for a Drum Audition: Cruise Ship Musician Gig

A few weeks ago we discussed how to prepare for a gig, but what if you're stuck on the very first step of getting through the audition? Check out this expert advice from DC-area drum teacher Andrew T., who has experience working as a musician for Princess Cruises:   As musicians, most of our gigs stem from informal auditions, which are typically very loose and relaxed. But what happens when you are asked to audition formally for a gig with a large corporation? From 2007 to 2009 I worked …
