Private Classical Piano Teacher

I earned my B.A. in music at Hood College and have spent the last fifteen years teaching general music classes as well as private voice and piano. I am also a preschool teacher in Montgomery County and my strengths lie in working with young children. If you are looking for a beginning piano teacher for your child, I would love to meet you! I use the Alfred series and generally have students work out of the technique, repertoire and theory books. Lessons are designed to be a half hour, and I understand the importance of changing activities frequently and keeping lessons fun and engaging when working with young children.

Music is a part of everyone. Yes, that means YOU!

Too many people say they "wish" they knew how to play an instrument, as if it wasn't up to them. As if those skills fell out of the sky and landed on people luckier than them. Well they don't.

The ability to play is a skill that YOU CAN LEARN. Music Theory is knowledge that YOU CAN LEARN. You want to learn these things, and I want to help you!

I've taught private and group piano classes in San Diego for 2 years, and it truly has become my passion. I'm constantly looking for more opportunities to grow and spread the joy of music to those who seek it.

My ultimate goal as an instructor is to inspire confidence and provide my students with the foundational tools necessary to be musicians in their own right. I want to leave you with the drive, curiosity, and tools to continue learning on your own, if and when our relationship comes to an end.

Lets get started! I look forward to meeting you!

"Lena is an expert piano teacher. My son has been taking lessons with her for little over 2 years and he is so much improved now. He didn't have good foundation from his previous teacher, but Lena went over every single basic detail for my son such as fingerings, posture, techniques, touches and she even explains of body mechanism related to piano skills. Of course, Lena is patient and her teaching style is fun! That really helped my son not to give up playing the piano. I am more than happy to found her for my son. Highly recommend Lena for your piano teacher!"

"I am a classically trained violinist and singer songwriter who is looking to improve my piano skills. In our lesson I felt like I was able to get the type of thorough instruction I was looking for. We covered position, technical exercises, and classical pieces that I should be proficient in. It was apparent that Mesrop has a very deep understanding of this instrument and can approach it from the technical perspective I was looking for. I’m also happy that I can bring in songs from my songwriter project and get a composition perspective on those when I need it. It’s a very good balance for me as a performer and a songwriter. It’s important to find a teacher who you genuinely like, and Mesrop’s kind personality and professionalism are a great fit for me."

"I met Lori at a recent voice competition where she was the designated pianist for my division. She rehearsed patiently, returned texts promptly, and kept a steady, cheerful attitude through two days surrounded by stressed-out singers. As for her playing, she performed challenging repertoire with grace and disciplined understatement that made it clear she was there to help us shine. It's hard for me to overstate just how good an accompanist she is."

"I have the highest praise for Neil. I am an adult, and I studied for nine years as a child and started studying again about ten years ago and have studied with several teachers during that time. I work on some difficult pieces, and Neil can always explain to me how to play the passages I am having trouble with and make it seem easy. Also, he can demonstrate for me how something should be played because he is such an excellent pianist. I am so happy I found Neil, and highly recommend him."

"David is an excellent teacher due to his cheerful attitude, his patience, and his ability to identify the issue that is hampering progress. I picked him specifically due to his years of experience and I can confirm that he is extremely knowledgeable in musical theory and good at explaining it as well. The only issue he might have is that he can be a bit talkative although personally I find it endearing. I Would highly recommend him to anyone that learns best through positive reinforcement."
