As a student of mine you can expect to improve your playing skills week to week. I can teach from the very first lesson on. Students will learn techniques to improve their playing and will play fun music. If you are interested in learning improvisation, I can help with that, too. I enjoy teaching violin, viola and cello.
I am most passionate about teaching students to become independent, critical thinking musicians who will be able to rely on their own knowledge to learn new music as they go along. I stress music reading, ear training, and strong fundamentals in playing. I am very encouraging, love spreading my love of music.

About Melissa

I began playing violin in elementary school, and immediately knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My first words as a baby were lyrics because I sang before I spoke. I played violin until 11th grade when I fell in love with the sound of the viola. I studied music performance

Melodies in your head and a song in your heart, but your voice isn't so great, or maybe it is. I can teach your to connect the physicality and express yourself with a Violin or Viola. (soprano or Alto). The tough part is learning hold to hold the violin properly. It takes a couple months to train the muscles a new stance. With my help your posture and breathing will become as one with the music It's not a myth, the violin is the most complex instrtument to learn. Having said that You will consider what joy it is to enjoy the music and dance. Comprehensive program with ear training and reading the music.

In my teaching I seek to inspire the very best in every student through clear expectations, consistency, patience, and a great deal of laughter. It is important to me to treat each student as an individual and to find a method of instruction that will best fit each individual personality and skill set.

Music is an excellent mode through which to learn leadership, collaboration, and self-discipline. It is a means by which we may better ourselves no matter what our age.

My system for teaching beginners derives from the Suzuki method and uses the Suzuki books as it's structure. For students who have surpassed the Suzuki level, I teach Russian School technique. My own training is largely Russian school, influenced by Heifetz and modern European tradition.

About Mikaela

Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music, Jacobs Scholar Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance - 2007-2011 I work with each student to create a personalized experience that will best suit their individual goals and needs. My teaching focuses on providing each student with a solid foundation

My daughter has been taking lessons with Mikaela for 3 years and has been thriving! Mikaela is kind and friendly while holding her students to high standards. They all clearly enjoy themselves and it is rewarding to see them all progress from one recital to the next. She comes to the house to give lessons but now teaches through zoom due to the pandemic. Highly recommended!!!

Our daughter had her first lesson yesterday and loved it and Mikaela. She said it was the best day ever and can't wait for her next lesson next week! Mikaela obviously has experience teaching children and make our daughter feel at ease and comfortable. Most of the first lesson seemed to be focused on proper instrument and handling, which makes sense. It can take years to undo poor posture and position if not begun correctly. Mikaela explained what she was doing and why, and made sure our daughter understood everything as she went along. Thank you for a first great experience!
Daniel S.
Mikaela is not only an excellent musician but an outstanding music teacher, a rare combination. I have been taking violin lessons from her for quite some time now, and I am amazed at how much of a difference she has made in my efforts to pick up the instrument as a total beginner.

She has great observational abilities to immediately notice errors in form or movement, all the while maintaining calm and complete patience. She also has gift for suggesting corrections with analogy and imagery that has been very helpful in my experience.

I would highly recommend her.

Lipeng is very patient and encouraging for my beginner 11-year-old, using the video format well to demonstrate the songs and watch the student. She has been a good fit for a player who is motivated to improve but can complain a little bit about practicing everyday.
Paul C.
Very first lesson with Lipeng and I enjoyed it so very much. Lipeng encourages to listen to the music and then accentuate the notes to make it music, not to simply play them.
