I do a variety of styles in music for the violin. I use whatever method (book or teaching style) is needed to teach what the student needs to learn. I have been teaching violin for 25 years. Depending on age, we will start in either Essential Elements or Suzuki. All beginners will start the bow after they can read the first 8 notes. All intermediates will be able to play 2 octave scales from 3 sharps to 3 flats as well as well into Wolfhart book 1. They will also be able to shift into third position cleanly and will be starting on vibrato. For Advanced players, we will be working on Concertos, sonatas, and partitas if they wish to go classical. IF they wish other styles, we will have started that in intermediate. All students will have an opportunity to go through the music development program, if they are interested.

About Chris

Ms Chris was great my daughter really enjoyed her first lesson. Ms Chris was easy to work with and made my daughter comfortable that she felt free to ask questions and make mistakes without worry. My daughter is looking forward to the next lesson.

If you’re looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable and patient strings teacher, you will love Mrs. Heins. Both of my sons have been taking lessons from Mrs. Heins for several years (one for viola and one for cello). They have learned so much under her instruction, such as earning All-County and All-State honors. They also practice their live performance skills twice a year during informal musical concerts. Mrs. Heins also offers participation in the Royal Conservatory Music Development program, which can earn your child credit for college. She is a gem and should you choose her, you won’t be disappointed.

My teaching philosophy centers around helping students build a strong foundation (i.e. posture, technique, ear training, music theory, etc). The goal is to be able to freely express oneself through the instrument. As part of the training we will eventually compose and produce a song together.

About Leta

I was classically trained by my dad since age 5. Over the years I also became a singer, songwriter, and music producer.

Music has always inspired and motivated me. In my house growing up there was an old violin that sat in the corner of our front room, unplayed and untouched. My parents had bought it for my older sister with the little money they had from my father's fisherman wages. A month or two later it went back in its case and shoved in a place that was easy to overlook. 10 years later, I opened the case, found a teacher, and joined a beginner orchestra. 11 years later and I still find the violin as inspiring and beautiful as it was that first day. However, it wasn't always easy. Violin lessons were paid out of my own pocket, time was sacrificed for practice and eventually, an advanced violin was needing to be bought. Violin has always been a symbol of self sacrifice and motivation in my life.

These circumstances have become the foundation of the teaching methods I use for my students. The beginning of each lesson, we work together to create goals that stretch the student while keeping them ...

"Great pleasure working with Kelvin

Kelvin is not only an amazing, kind-hearted, smart and trustworthy person but he is also one of the best musicians I have seen around the Chicago area. I have been in the music business for most of my life having taken many violin and piano lessons from different people and Kelvin has to be the most patient musician I have collaborated with yet. I recommend Kelvin to anyone looking to learn to play music - young - and - old. He is extremely passionate about music and continuously never fails to inspire me."

"Steve Maloney is a true master at both playing and teaching the violin. I have had some teachers in the past who were great players but lousy at teaching, but Steve is the Real Deal. My playing had immediately and significantly improved since my first lesson and only continues to improve. I had many deficiencies both technically and musically and Steve has provided me with practical solutions to rectify my once poor technique and bring out a much more refined musicality from my playing. I highly recommend Steve Maloney as violin instructor."

Violin Tips: Stiff Shoulders and Arm Pain

Playing the violin should be fun - not a pain! Some arm fatigue is normal when you're first starting out, but anything more than that may be a sign of poor posture, technique or instrument placement. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you practice and play... 1. Relax. Many beginner players tense up their shoulders, arms or wrist without even realizing it, which can cause a lot of problems. Just relax! Focus on your breathing, but also don't lose your posture. 2. Check your techni …

A Beginner's Guide to Violin Bows: 4 Details to Consider

Selecting a violin bow, much like choosing a guitar, can be a very subjective process.  To the uninitiated, it's "just a violin bow."  They're all the same, right?  Wrong.  To the seasoned violinist, the perfect bow will depend on the player's technique, playing style and overall personal preference.  There are several factors that can affect the sound of the bow on the strings, including strength, shape, and age of the bow. Most beginner violins come with bows that are perfectly fine, b …
