I've been teaching piano for over 13 years. I use Alfred's Premier Piano Courses levels 1 - 6 for children. For adults I use Alfred's Lesson Book 1 - 3. My teaching goals for all my students are to enable them to read and make music so that they could experience the joy of journeying in the realm of musical sounds.
My philosophy in teaching piano is very much like learning to drive a car. Once a person learns the mechanism of driving so many possibilities open for the person to enjoy trips to many places that bring pleasures that destiny could offer. In some ways, playing the piano is very much like learning to drive a car. Once the mechanism of making music is mastered, the possibilities of making journeys of musical sound is endless.

About Heather
Hi, I'm Heather. I’m from a small town in Harford County, MD, called Abingdon. It’s really close to Baltimore, MD which is about 15 minutes away from Abingdon. I live with my husband and two bunnies. I’m an R.N. with a bachelors degree in Nursing and 16 years of training in music by masters of Curtis Institute, Julliard, and Peabody Conservatory. I have been teaching piano for over 12 years. In 2001, I had a diversion of career from nursing and I absolutely fell in love with the idea of teaching piano and I started giving piano lessons. I love playing my Masan & Hamlin grand piano for personal pleasure, and I spend a lot of time practicing for different occasions. I h’ve played in over twenty piano recitals, and for numerous other occasions such as in Weddings , Funerals and in Choir accompaniments.
On a different not
e, did you know that children who study a musical instrument learn responsibility and discipline, they gain pride in their accomplishments which in turn makes them confident, they learn to think in a logical manner, and they will perform better in school. These are just a few of the benefits children could gain through music lessons

My Specialties: My passion is classical music, however, I realize that the students'€™ interests are diverse, so, I teach pieces they request which include easy fun Pop Music, Hymns, Boogie, Rock, Country and other contemporary pieces.
My Education: At an early age, I took a great interest in music, so my older sister who is four years older than I taught me what she learned in her piano lessons. She also taught me music theory. At the age of 12-14 my parents sent me to private piano lessons. My piano teacher at that time eventually told me that I needed to find a new teacher because she had taught me all she knew. After that, I approached a well known Julliard Master in town. He took me on as a student after he heard me play the Beethoven'€™s Pathetique Sonata in C minor. I learned through Arthur Fiddler'€™s comment made in the newspaper that Mr. Chang, my teacher, in his opinion was the best piano teacher in Hawaii. Under Mr. Chang’s tutelage, I was exposed to a variety of classical pieces written by famous composers of the 15th to 18th centuries. At the age of 14, I made my first piano recital debut. My piano teacher was impressed with my talent and expressed his wish for me to pursue music and enter into Julliard. But, my parents being immigrants from Korea, did not think it was a good choice of career. So, I went into nursing instead, much to the consternation of my piano teacher. In 2001, I made a career change and found my passion for music revived again. I started teaching piano as well as taking Music Theory courses at a community college and taking lessons from a Julliard- Peabody master as well lessons from a Curtis Institute master. I continue taking piano lesson even now while I give piano lessons to beginner and intermediate students.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my piano studio, besides just learning to actually play the piano, students will engage in flashcard drills, writing work, and other activities to strengthen their overall knowledge of music. This will prepare them well for continued study in piano, for playing other instruments or singing, and for enjoying music in general. As an incentive to practice, our studio awards each week piano dollars for the time each student practices during the week. At the end of the year, we have an auction that the children could participate in using their piano dollars to purchase items.

In first the lesson the concepts stressed include:
1. Hand position and posture at the piano.
2. Right hand , left hand, and how the fingers are numbered.
3. Direction on the keyboard
4. The pattern of keys on the key board

In the first year of piano study, the concepts covered are:
1. Theory: identify steps, skips, and repeats; write and recognize 2nd -5ths intervals; sharp and flat signs; identify key signatures
2. Rhythms: whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and dotted notes.
3. Technique: correct hand position; curved fingers, down –up wrist for phrasing, legato/staccato touch, penta scales; major chords and voicing (balance of hands) 5-finger melodies; single line melodies divided between hands; note-against-note playing, some melody/chord playing.
4. Repertoire: A Dozen A Day by Edna-Mae Burmae Books; Five-finger melodies by Faber Faber; Famous & Fun Pop Books by Carol Matz ; Boogie, Rock & Country Level 1 by James Bastien; Alfred’s Basic Adult Piano Course Lesson Book Level One for adult beginners.

In addition to lessons each student is required to participate in an annual piano recital to give them experience and confidence in performance.

Lessons are catered to each individual student and are conducted in a supportive environment where students are encouraged to take risks, try new things, make mistakes, and most importantly be themselves.

I generally focus voice lessons around classical vocal technique, which will develop good habits regarding... breathing... posture... body/facial tension...and overall good vocal health. Though I am classically trained, I am a firm believer in the idea that classical vocal techniques are carried over into any genre. In addition to classical repertoire I have experience working with musical theater, pop, jazz, soul, and country.

When teaching beginning piano I often focus on building a good foundation. Lessons are centered on rudiments, basic music theory, and technique. A wide variety of repertoire will be available to each student and will cover many styles and genres.

I value the time I have with my students and expect each student to come prepared to each lesson with an open mind and willingness to work. With music, the best results only come to those who put in 100% both during lessons and during individual practice time. This is key in any musical pursuit. Overall, I want lessons to be enjoyable while still maintaining a sense of progress for the student.

As a teacher I have had experience teaching both young children and adults in many settings, whether it be in a classroom, small group lesson, or one-on one. I pride myself on providing lessons that are uniquely individual and foster a students strengths while also building on their weaknesses. The best part about being a music educator is that I get to share my love of music with all of my students. With that said, whether you are a beginner who's interest has been sparked, or you have aspirations of becoming a professional musician I can help you there.

Chelsea has been teaching my 14 year old grandson now for over 2 years. She is actually "gets him" where many teachers don't and she manages to bring the absolutely best out in him. She clearly loves her work and it shows so much so that after many years of playing the piano, more off than on recently, I decided to take lessons with her too. I could not be more pleased with the outcome.

Chelsea is not only a phenomenal voice teacher, she is a phenomenal person! Chelsea gave lessons to my daughter for many years and was just as focused with her improving her skills (which she did and even led my daughter getting a vocal scholarship!) as she was on my daughter's overall balance and well-being. We love Chelsea!!

Chelsea has worked with my daughter since middle school. Under Chelsea's guidance, my daughter was accepted into a county honors chorus and accepted subsequently into her advanced high school ensembles. Chelsea understands the busy lives of middle & high school students and is very flexible with scheduling. This summer, she has already started working with my daughter on choral pieces for the upcoming school year. I recommend her highly and we look forward to working with her in the years to come.

When our daughter said she wanted to take piano lessons, we checked out several instructors in various teaching settings. We feel very fortunate to have found Justin for our 10yr young daughter's first piano lessons! His approach with her has invited her to want to learn and do well. He selected just the right books for her lessons and is also helping her learn a song she wants to play from one of her favorite bands. This keeps her engaged with other aspects of skill building and music reading! He also wrote out a clear description of what she is to include in home practice sessions. We definitely recommend Justin.

Cheerful and energetic teacher with several years of teaching experience and over 18 years of performing experience. I teach my students technique, artistry & musicianship, music theory, music history, composition, sightreading, and improvisation. I believe in a wholistic approach to music that expands beyond the boundaries of the keyboard. In order to understand the piano, you must also understand music as a whole! I firmly believe that that the key to success in learning how to play the piano is learning how to become your own teacher. Many students don't realize that 99% of the work is done at home. Unfortunately, most teachers don't teach their students how to practice, resulting in very slow progress and a bored and frustrated student. I give my students the tools they need to learn quickly, which improves their focus and motivation, and most importantly allows them to have fun! My curriculum focuses on classical music, but also incorporates other genres like jazz and pop ...

About Sarah
I am a pianist and light lyric soprano. In May 2017, I graduated cum laude from the University of Maryland in College Park. I received my B.M. in Piano Performance under the tutelage of Dr. Mayron Tsong and my B.A. in Vocal Performance under the tutelage of Linda Mabbs. I am a CAPA scholarship recipient and a member of Pi Kappa Lambda. I have maintained a private piano studio since 2014 and also teach additional skills such as music theory, music history, improvisation, and sightreading. I am excited about introducing children to the beauty of music and believe that learning an instrument positively affects individuals in all areas of life. Listening to, practicing, and performing music equips children with important skills that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Since the age of 8, I have also been an active performer and competitor
in the Washington Metropolitan Area. At the age of 15, I débuted with both the Capital City Symphony and the JMU Symphony Orchestra in performances of Liszt’s Totentanz. I have won numerous awards and competitions in VA, MD, and D.C. In 2010, I placed 2nd in the NSO Young Soloist’s Competition and performed at the Kennedy Center Mainstage. In 2013, I won the Golden the Voices of America Competition and performed at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. This year, I won the Mary Graham Lasley Scholarship Competition in Alexandria, VA and as a result will be performing the Barber Piano Concerto with the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra in their next season. In past years I have also performed at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Atlas Performing Arts Center in D.C., and the Alden Theater in McLean, VA. One of my primary passions is new music, and I have premiered numerous compositions at the New Music at Maryland recital series. In 2013, I was invited to collaborate with the New Street Dance Group in a performance of two new works for chamber ensemble at the FringeArts Festival in Philadelphia. In future years, I hope to frequently premiere new works on an international scale.

SooJi has been teaching my 11 year old son for three years. I remember the day I met her. She was smiling for whole time of our first meeting. She helped us getting a good conditioned used keyboard for practice, by taking her time. One thing I always wondered was "does she have anger?" Before being a father, I'm also an artist, painter, so I know ho some artist behave which irritates me sometimes. SooJi recommended me to stay during few lessons so I can observe my son's improvements over time. She never gets mad. Literally, NEVER. Being a teacher is difficult job. Students can be rude and that makes teachers angry and sometimes lessons go real wrong. One day, my son got so tired that he couldn't focus on lesson. I got mad but SooJi said "that's ok. I understand. People work and get tired and that's normal. We have few minutes left so why don't we play something fun then?" and my son smiled. I don't know, but I can definitely feel SooJi has a very special talent of making people feel better and more comfortable. She knows how to ease people and how to deal with problems without getting angry or shouting at kids. Her lessons are so much fun, yet so much learning too. Sometimes even I enjoyed the lesson and I participated and SooJi and my son laughed at me haha. Before meeting her, my son never knew the "music" but after having lessons with her, my son already just completed his third solo recital which was around 40 minutes. I was so proud of him that I actually cried during the concert. SooJi is not just a teacher. My son one day told me that SooJi is his best friend. They get along well, my son laughs a lot which doesn't happen often and SooJi makes silly jokes that make him feel ease during lessons. They are just too many good things I can say about her, but I won't because it will get way longer.
One thing I want to say is if people want to be a teacher, they need to learn from her. They need to observe SooJi's talent, humor, kindness, and smiles. We love her so much and we appreciate her playing during our wedding. Thank you SooJi! You are our second daughter! We love you so much!
