About Victoria
Vicky is a music teacher originally hailing from Cocoa Beach, FL. She has been teaching since 2008, starting in the Central Florida area and then in the Southwest Virginia region. She studied music therapy at the graduate level through Radford University, and general music, with coursework in education, religious studies, and vocal training at the undergraduate level through the University of Central Florida, Orlando. At UCF she has studied with Dr. Jeremy Hunt and Kimberly Saunders Randall, and her past voice teachers include, Jason Reichman and Young Ju Lee, both FSU alumni. She started her music career with piano 20 years ago under the wing of Diana Ryder, and from there her love for music grew. Growing up, she listened to a variety of music, classical, musical theatre, Disney, pop, and Vietnamese folk and pop music. Ms. Ryder expos
ed her to a plethora of new genres and from there she developed her own style. Piano-wise her primary focuses are the romantic and baroque era, especially Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin. Vocally, her styles branch musical theatre, opera, pop, country, and on occasion touches on jazz. She has made the effort to learn as much as she possibly can about music, the different ways to play, to sing, while still keeping true to her own style. She hopes that her students have that same drive and be open to learning all sorts of music!

Jessica moved to the Chevy Chase/Bethesda area in 2009, having grown up and gone to school in New York and Ohio. In my view, the most interesting thing about performing music is that it is one of the few activities that engages both the left and the right brain at the same time. With that in mind, my teaching places equal importance on developing strong technique, and developing creativity. Students learn all the basics of music, and also spend time developing strong ensemble skills and strong background knowledge of style and repertoire, so that they can enjoy music in all kinds of settings, all their lives.

Knowing from experience how "boring" it can be to learn by rote, I combine technical work with fun time playing duets together, improvising, and exploring a wide variety of styles and genres of music. After all, there is no experience so motivating as hearing a new piece that you HAVE to learn to play yourself!

I had a great first lesson with Jessica. The lesson took place in a comfortable studio in her house. We discussed my goals and then reviewed where I am currently. She paid carefully attention to my body position with the bow and had several great suggestions on exercises to improve it. I'm already looking forward to the next lesson.

I really enjoy taking piano lessons with Jessica. It had been 40 years since I took lessons (as a teenager). Jessica's manner as well as her knowledge and love of music is just what I was hoping to find in a teacher. Her ability to explain musical concepts and her thoughtful approach to teaching has far surpassed my expectations. I have studied with Wanchi Huang at James Madison University for six years. At JMU, I earned a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music, both in violin performance. I received my D.M.A. at Catholic University of America, studying with Jody Gatwood. When I was a student at JMU, I taught several students privately. The students ranged from retirees to JMU faculty and students to adolescents. I am now teaching at Baltimore Talent Education Center, where I teach violin in small groups and individual lessons. The students at BTEC range from pre- kindergarden through high school. I also have festival experience. I have been a student at Brevard Music Center, Heifetz International Music Institute, BayView Music Festival, and I was a Teaching Fellow at Interlochen Arts Camp. derstand that every student is a little bit different. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses. Every student has a different learning style. Every student has a different way of understanding things, a different way of processing information, and a different personality all together. It will be my job as a teacher to get to know each student individually and use my teaching methods to teach the student how to play the violin and help him or her to reach his or her goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid-back person. I am easy-going, enthusiastic about violin playing and about teaching and learning music, and I am very patient with my students as well. However, I am also very demanding. I explain and demonstrate objectives in a very precise way, and I demand a lot of detailed work from my students, inside and outside the lesson. I explain specifically what I want the student to do. By the end of every lesson, the student will have specific things to work on for next time. I expect each student to make practicing a habit, and practice regularly what has been discussed in the lesson. I try to make the lessons as pleasant and as laid-back as possible. But I become more firm, serious, and strict when a student either is not making an effort or does not practice enough outside the lesson.
I start students off with the Suzuki method. We work on techniques to hold the violin properly, hold the bow properly, and get a decent sound out of the violin, without too much physical tension. A student begins by learning to play by ear. After he or she is comfortable playing by ear, we associate the notes that the student hears and plays on the violin with written notes on a page.
We also work with the Paul Roland methods so that the student can learn the violin in a basic, rudimentary way. It involves a lot of repetitive patterns, back and forth motions that are slow and round, and avoiding excessive tension. This will give the student the tools that he or she needs to learn how to play the violin in a short period of time.
In three to six months, a student who is a beginner will be able to hold the violin and bow comfortably, create a decent sound on the violin, and play the Twinkle Variations, and maybe a few other songs.
If the student has played violin before, then in three to six months, he or she will have had some rehabilitation to get rid of tension and force, overcome some bad habits he or she may have developed, and review the fundamentals of violin playing. I will improve the student's approach to the violin, and by the end of the three to six months, he or she will have a better idea on how to practice and play the violin.

I will expect the student to have a violin, rosin, and a pencil.

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki Method- a starting point, particularly for kids, but for people of all ages. It is a good way to begin learning the violin by playing by ear, developing a strong, clear tone, and bringing out one's individuality through his/her musical development and his/her ability to be expressive.

In a matter of time, I want the student to get used to reading music, in addition to playing by ear. This can be done through the pieces in the Suzuki method or through other music.

Eventually, I take the student off of the Suzuki method and work with him or her on classical repertoire.

NOTE: I prefer to teach students ages 11 & up.  I will accommodate younger students, but as vocal development is a direct reflection of physical development (the instrument is the body), we will be unable to delve deeply into technique.  Instead, the curriculum for younger students will include musicianship and piano skills; they will be more of music lessons that incorporate singing rather than "vocal" lessons.  My current studio consists of all sorts of singers including classical, musical theater, R&B, and pop.  In classical voice lessons, we will be learning songs not only in English, but also Italian, German, and French. Classical voice lessons may not be for everyone, however, and we will learn repertoire that suits the interests of each student.

I emphasize a basic knowledge of music theory, because it
's important for a singer to not only know how to sing, but to also understand the music he or she is singing. I will incorporate music theory into the lessons, starting with basics such as learning how to read notes.

I believe in making sure the singer is comfortable and confident.  The environment you will be learning in is open and non-threatening because a singer needs a place to explore his or her voice.  I encourage my students to make mistakes and to keep the lines of communication as open as possible.  Singers are perfectionists, and we're constantly telling ourselves what we do wrong- we don't need someone else enforcing that negativity.

I concentrate on a classical vocal technique, with proper posture, efficient breathing, lack of facial and body tension, and healthy vocal production. I believe that it is important to have a strong foundation of healthy technique no matter what style of singing. My teaching style and lesson focus will be different for each individual person, and I'm very flexible in adapting to each singer's needs and personality.

I am a very understanding teacher, and very patient, but I will push you to work to your potential! What you put into these lessons and your practicing is what you will get out of it. I am not strict, but I do expect dedication, passion, and respect. I am a very enthusiastic and energetic teacher, and lessons with me will be fun, productive, and encouraging.

The Method

1) Music is a language...... By: Victor Wooten.

Both music and verbal languages serve the same purpose. They are both forms of expression.
They can be used as a way to communicate with others, they can be read and written, then can make you laugh or cry, think or question and can speak to one or many and both can definitely make you move.

ks better than the spoken word because it doesn't have to be understood to be effective."

In some instances, music works better than the spoken word because it doesn't have to be understood to be effective. Although many musicians agree that music is a "language" it is rarely treated as such.

Many of us treat it as something that can only be learned by following a strict regiment under the tutelage of a skilled teacher. This approach has been followed for hundreds of years with proven success... But it takes a long time. Too long.

Think about the first language you learned as a child. More importantly, think about how you learned it.

"You were allowed to make mistakes."

You were a baby when you first started speaking and even though you spoke the language incorrectly you were allowed to make mistakes - and the more mistakes you made, the more your parents smiled!

Learning to speak was not something you were sent somewhere to do only a few times a week. The majority of people you spoke to were not beginners, they were already proficient speakers. Imagine your parents forcing to only speak to other babies until you were good enough to speak to them! You'd probably be an adult before you could carry on a proper conversation.

To use a musical term, as a baby you were allowed to "jam" with professionals.

If we approach music in the same natural way we approached our first language, we would learn to speak it in the same short time it took to speak our first language.
Proof of this can be seen in almost any family where a child grows up with other musicians in the family.

Here are a few keys to follow in learning guitar or bass:

In the beginning we embrace mistakes instead of correcting them. Like a child playing air guitar there are no wrong notes.

Allow young musicians to play and perform with accomplished musicians on a daily basis.

Encourage young musicians to play more than they practice. The more they play, the more they will practice on their own.

Music comes from the musician, not the instrument.

3) A dedicated and passionate Teacher to tie everything together and keep you on track.

The early you start, the better. Kids age 6 or up are my best customers. They don't have adjust to anything other than to get their little fingers around a guitar appropriate to their size.
For young adults and people that tried play the guitar the old fashion way, here's my advise:

You will need to take a step back... or maybe two steps. Let me show you a better way.

These 3 things changes everything in how to learn or teach guitar. This is just to start the journey. I won't even mention custom songs or our musician club for you to perform your songs.

"If music is a language. You should never stop talking."

Remember that a language works the best when we have something interesting to say.
Many music teachers never find out what their students have to say. We only tell them what they are supposed to say.
A child speaks a language for years before they even learn the alphabet.
Too many rules at the onset will actually slow them down.
In my eyes the approach to music should be the same.

After all, music is a language too.

DeTrece "Dee" Lavender is a native of Miami, Florida. When her family moved to Sarasota, she was afforded the opportunity to study music and the performing arts as a student of the Westcoast School/Henry L. Porter School of Music. It was then that Dee began to understand the power of the creative arts as an effective form of emotional expression and release. By middle school, DeTrece began fine tuning her natural talents by studying classical voice which earned her several starring roles in the Sarasota Youth Opera, The Aslo Theater and the Players Theater. She is also a proud former member of the Westcoast Black Theater Troop in Sarasota, FL. Under the caring leadership of these opportunities, she was able to combine musical and life experiences in order to offer a more well rounded educational and musical experience for her students.


She was awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where she received a dual Bachelor of Music degree in Music Therapy and Vocal Performance (Class of 2003). It was through her service as a music therapist, Millieu (residential) counselor and music teacher in the Boston City Public Schools/Greater Boston Metropolitan Area, that she began to feel the call toward a greater understanding of the gravity and role of the socio-emotional needs of students (and their families/villages) in urban settings. This call brought her to Baltimore, MD where she enrolled in the Pastoral Counseling Masters of Science program at Loyola University. I am a professional saxophonist and recording artist with 14 years of playing experience. I studied Jazz Saxophone at the Manhattan School of Music and then William Paterson University, where I graduated with a Bachelors degree. I am currently pursuing my Masters Degree in Music Education at Towson University. I have performed original music with my jazz group for the last 5 years across New York, New Jersey, Maryland and D.C. I have had the good fortune of being able to study with some of the worlds greatest jazz musicians including Mulgrew Miller, Christian McBride, Rich Perry, Chris Potter, Seamus Blake and Donny McCaslin.

Miguel is a great teacher.....I'm an adult learning to read music and play an instrument for the first time. He's knowledgeable, patient, and wants to make sure I learn the basic foundation skills to build on. He's always on time, pleasant and interested in my progress. He's also flexible, wanting to make sure I'm enjoying the experience. I wasn't sure what to expect, but this introduction to playing exceeds my expectations. I feel very fortunate to have Miguel leading the way.

I graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor in Music Education and am getting my graduate degree in Music Education from the University of Maryland.
My primary instrument is clarinet and euphonium but am familiar with most instruments at a beginner to intermediate level.
As a woodwind specialist, I have taught clarinet, flute and saxophone during summer camps and programs for multiple years.
I'm currently the clarinet technique teacher at Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC.

I have been knitting and crocheting for 12 years and have made a wide range of products from hair bows to sweaters.
